Seahawks | Russell Wilson not leaving football

Wed, 22 Apr 2015 10:51:59 -0700

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson said he loves baseball, but he has no plans to leave football. "I love playing the game of football, to be one of 32 men (starting NFL quarterbacks) in the world who get to do what I do. It's a special thing and I've been able to play in two Super Bowls and I'm only 26 years old. That's been a blessing," Wilson said. He also said he'll never give up the dream of playing two sports professionally.

Fantasy Tip: You shouldn't be worried about Wilson's committment to football as a fantasy owner looking to draft him. Heading into the 2015 season, Wilson's fantasy stock should rise, and you should feel a bit more comfortable selecting him as a low-end QB1, especially now that Marshawn Lynch is returning and the team added a big touchdown threat in Jimmy Graham.

Seahawks | SEA cautious with Russell Wilson deal

Thu, 16 Apr 2015 09:02:30 -0700

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson is in negotiations with the team on a long-term contract extension, but general manager John Schneider said the team will be cautious in what they offer Wilson for a new contract. Schneider will be mindful of the salary cap and the club's future. Wilson will make $1.5 million in 2015, but a new deal is expected to give him over $20 million a year and more than $100 million total.

Fantasy Tip: Wilson had always been more of a QB2 for fantasy football owners, especially with not much of a receiving game to speak of. Now that Marshawn Lynch is back and Jimmy Graham has been added, though, he'll be more of a force to be reckoned with through the air and with his feet. Wilson can become more of a reliable QB1 in the right matchups.

Seahawks | Looking elsewhere for backup QB?

Mon, 13 Apr 2015 03:53:54 -0700

Free-agent QB Tarvaris Jackson (Seahawks) and the Seattle Seahawks have had discussions about a new contract to back up QB Russell Wilson, but there has been difficulty determining Jackson's value. It is possible the team could look elsewhere for a backup.

Seahawks | Russell Wilson wants to play two sports

Sun, 12 Apr 2015 18:14:07 -0700

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson said he hasn't ruled out a return to professional baseball and would consider playing two sports.

Fantasy Tip: With a potentially huge contract from the Seahawks coming his way in the near future, it is hard to imagine Seattle committing a bunch of money to Wilson while allowing him to play baseball. For now, the idea of Wilson being a two-sport athlete is just talk, and it shouldn't impact where he is selected in fantasy drafts.

Seahawks | Russell Wilson won't get full guarantee

Tue, 31 Mar 2015 10:29:16 -0700

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson is expected to receive a contract extension this offseason that will make him the highest-paid player in the NFL. Sources say the deal would include high guarantees, but it wouldn't be a fully guaranteed contract as has been speculated. Talks between the two sides have yet to begin.

Seahawks | Russell Wilson could play out deal

Mon, 23 Mar 2015 13:34:49 -0700

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson could play out the 2015 season in the final year of his rookie deal without a contract extension. Wilson and the Seahawks have had no real progress on a long-term contract extension. Wilson is highly unlikely to accept a short-term deal. Wilson is preparing and budgeting as if he'll be on a bargain deal in 2015. It could take another year for both parties to agree on a long-term extension, and Wilson knows a franchise tag in 2016 would likely be for over $20 million.

Fantasy Tip: Wilson has been more of a QB2 for fantasy football owners in his first couple years in the NFL. With the addition of Jimmy Graham to the fold and now that Marshawn Lynch is returning, though, Wilson should be a viable QB1 worth owning once the elite quarterback names come off the board.

Seahawks | No talks between SEA, Russell Wilson

Sun, 22 Mar 2015 07:57:25 -0700

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson has not had contract extension talks with the Seattle Seahawks at this point, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Wilson likely will receive an extension at some point, but it does not look like it will happen now. Wilson posted some solid numbers this past season and could be a low-end No. 1 quarterback next season.

Seahawks | Russell Wilson nearing extension

Fri, 20 Mar 2015 21:49:38 -0700

The Seattle Seahawks and QB Russell Wilson might be on the verge of agreeing to a big and unique contract extension. "From what I've been told they've very close, they're just trying to make sure every single thing is in place before they go forward with this," beat writer Terry Blount said Friday, March 20. "I think it's going to be bigger and crazier and different from what any contract has ever been."

Fantasy Tip: The Seahawks signal caller has led the team to back-to-back Super Bowls and one championship. And he has emerged as a Top 10 signal caller at his position for fantasy owners, too.

Seahawks | No timeline for Russell Wilson

Thu, 19 Feb 2015 09:59:06 -0800

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson does not have a timeline to get a new deal done, according to general manager John Schneider.

Fantasy Tip: After being one of the biggest bargains in his first couple of seasons, Wilson will likely become one of the league's highest paid players heading into next season. Because of his ability to make plays happen with his legs, Wilson has become much more intriguing in fantasy leagues. However, until the team surrounds more aerial weapons around him, he shouldn't be seen as more than a low-end QB1.

Seahawks | Seahawks talking contract with Russell Wilson

Tue, 10 Feb 2015 13:48:56 -0800

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson and the club have started contract negotiations, according to general manager John Schneider. A new deal for Wilson will likely make him one of the highest paid players in the league, but Schneider said Wilson might be willing to take less in order to help the team keep some key players. Wilson is scheduled to make $837,000 in 2015 in the final year of his rookie deal.

Fantasy Tip: Wilson has taken his squad to back-to-back Super Bowl appearances, and he's one of the more physically gifted young quarterbacks in the league. With that said, his fantasy value remains somewhat limited because of Seattle's lack of receiving options around him. What the team lacks in aerial weapons, though, Wilson can make up for with his legs on the ground. Consider Wilson more of a QB2 heading into the 2015 season.

Seahawks | Russell Wilson still supports play call

Wed, 04 Feb 2015 12:41:08 -0800

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson still has no doubt in the last play call that turned into a game-clinching interception for the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX. "The part I hate is that I have to wait seven months to play another game," Wilson said. "My focus is still on being a Super Bowl-type winning quarterback for this football team."

Fantasy Tip: Wilson has proven himself to be a top-ten fantasy quarterback over the past two seasons, even with a subpart wide receiver corps in 2014. He remains a solid No. 1 fantasy quarterback option heading into 2015.

Seahawks | Will face challenge with salary cap

Thu, 29 Jan 2015 13:00:37 -0800

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson is expected to become the league's highest-paid player in the offseason, but head coach Pete Carroll thinks the team can avoid salary-cap repercussions for the rest of the team. Last year coming off their Super Bowl win, the Seahawks got rid of DTs Red Bryant and Chris Clemons and let CB Brandon Browner, WR Golden Tate, DT Clinton McDonald and CB Walter Thurmond leave in free agency.

Seahawks | Russell Wilson set for big payday

Wed, 21 Jan 2015 16:38:59 -0800

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson has a base salary of $662,434 this season, which is 25th among starting NFL quarterbacks. However, he will negotiate a contract extension this offseason that will make him one of the highest paid players in the league. A multi-year deal for Wilson is expected to be above $20 million per year with more than $50 million guaranteed. He is already the first player in NFL history to reach two Super Bowls in his first three seasons.

Fantasy Tip: Wilson ($4,444, 8.89% of cap) will help you save significant dollars at the QB position at FantasyScore for the Super Bowl if you elect to refrain from using Tom Brady.

Seahawks | Russell Wilson tosses three scores

Sat, 10 Jan 2015 20:39:23 -0800

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson threw for 268 yards and three scores and ran for 22 yards in a 31-17 victory over the Carolina Panthers in the divisional-round playoff game Saturday, Jan. 10.

Fantasy Tip: Wilson was efficient and mistake free as he often is, and regardless of Seattle's opponent in the conference title game, he should make a solid option at FantasyScore next weekend.

Sat, 10 Jan 2015 10:31:22 -0800

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson is expected to become the NFL's highest -paid quarterback this offseason when the team signs him to a long-term extension.

Seahawks | Russell Wilson undefeated against CAR

Tue, 06 Jan 2015 13:23:41 -0800

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson is 3-0 in his career against the Carolina Panthers, with all three games coming on the road against them. He also rallied his team to victory in the second half of each of those wins. Wilson is 64-for-90 (71%) against the Panthers for an average of 247 yards per game and a 91.8 quarterback rating. He also has only 54 yards rushing on 16 carries in those three games against Carolina.

Fantasy Tip: Wilson ($7,300, 14.6% of cap) and the Seahawks have struggled offensively in those three prior games against Carolina, and this divisional round matchup could be similar, with the Panthers defense playing solid of late. The fact that the game is in Seattle this time could make a big difference, though.

Seahawks | Russell Wilson coming off career game

Mon, 22 Dec 2014 13:14:34 -0800

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson was 20-for-31 for a career-high 339 passing yards in the Week 16 win over the Arizona Cardinals, and he was 12-for-17 for 264 yards and two touchdowns against five or more pass rushers. Wilson was 7-for-11 for 150 yards and a touchdown throwing outside the pocket and 10-for-14 for 194 yards and a TD on play action.

Fantasy Tip: Wilson and the Seattle offense are playing some of their best football as the regular season winds down, and it probably has a lot to do with the improved defensive unit. Wilson ($5,555) should be considered a midrange QB1 at FantasyScore in Week 17 against the St. Louis Rams.

Seahawks | Russell Wilson excels out of pocket

Fri, 12 Dec 2014 15:18:56 -0800

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson has been at his best in his career when he has scrambled out of the pocket, and he's kept the ball on 17 zone-read plays in the last five weeks and has averaged 8.7 yards per carry. In the first seven games, he kept the ball 13 times out of 75 zone reads. Wilson has ran for five touchdowns on zone-read carries this year alone, which is more than in his last two seasons combined.

Fantasy Tip: Wilson ($6,000) ran seven times for 35 yards against the San Francisco 49ers on Thanksgiving night. Although San Fran's defense has been pretty vulnerable of late, they've been pretty solid against limiting opposing QBs, especially on the ground. At FantasyScore, he's mildly interesting, at best.

Seahawks | Russell Wilson runs wild again

Sun, 09 Nov 2014 17:50:27 -0800

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson completed 10 of his 17 pass attempts for 172 yards and two interceptions in Week 10 against the New York Giants. He also ran 14 times for 107 yards with a touchdown.

Fantasy Tip: Wilson has rushed for over 100 yards three times this season, helping to salvage his stat line after less than stellar results in the passing game. He remains a Top 10 option in FantasyScore due to his dual threat status.

Seahawks | Russell Wilson good without Harvin

Fri, 17 Oct 2014 16:58:16 -0700

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson had a total QBR of 45.3 with former WR Percy Harvin on the field this season, and a QBR of 71.0 with him on the field.

Fantasy Tip: While QBR is a homemade ESPN statistic, and not an official NFL stat, it shows that Wilson did not suffer much when Harvin was not on the field, and in fact he flourished. He remains a top-10 fantasy option at his position.

Seahawks | Russell Wilson sets record

Mon, 06 Oct 2014 20:55:24 -0700

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson set a Monday Night Football record for rushing yards by a quarterback with 122 Monday, Oct. 6. He also scored a touchdown rushing and threw for 201 yards and two scores.

Fantasy Tip: Although Seattle is often happy to play it conservatively and pound the ball with Marshawn Lynch, Wilson showed the type of damage he can do when he is given the reins of the offense. He may not be the steadiest player at the position from a fantasy standpoint, but he offers a lot of upside.

Seahawks | Russell Wilson impressed with WR speed

Tue, 03 Jun 2014 16:51:09 -0700

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson is impressed with the speed of the team's receiving corps, especially thanks to the addition of WR Paul Richardson, who the team drafted this year. "Yeah, our receivers right now are as fast as it gets. You've got Percy Harvin, Doug Baldwin, Jermaine Kearse is extremely fast too. Then you add Paul Richardson who you saw today went for that deep, deep ball that I threw to him. He's looking exceptional as well. So I think our receiver group is probably one of the faster in the league right now, based on who we have."

Fantasy Tip: Don't be fooled now that Seattle has more wideout depth in 2014; the Seahawks remain a run-first squad. Richardson will have to battle for playing time behind Percy Harvin and Doug Baldwin, and he probably won't have a significant enough role to be worth a draft pick this fall.

Mon, 03 Feb 2014 19:36:16 -0800

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson plans to attend spring training with the Texas Rangers, according to his agent. He was selected in that sport's Rule 5 draft in December.

Fantasy Tip: Seattle fans and fantasy owners likely need not worry about Wilson ditching football for baseball, obviously. It's interesting that he will work with the team and hasn't given up his baseball completely, though.

Thu, 19 Dec 2013 23:49:45 -0800

With 7,673 passing yards in 30 regular-season starts, Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck needs 248 for the most by a quarterback in his first two seasons. Carolina's Cam Newton had 7,920 in 2011-12 and the Colts' Peyton Manning had 7,874 in 1998-99. Also, Luck has 20 wins, tied for fourth-most by a QB in his first two seasons. Seattle's Russell Wilson has 23 with two games to play while Ben Roethlisberger had 22 in 2004-05 and Dan Marino 21 in 1983-84.

Seahawks | Russell Wilson comfortable with Percy Harvin

Tue, 29 Oct 2013 16:46:17 -0700

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson suggested that he's already comfortable with WR Percy Harvin (hip) despite the fact that Harvin has yet to make his season debut. The two did some individual drills in practice last week. "I feel very comfortable with him already," Wilson said. "We talk about game stuff all the time. He's up here all the time just getting ready. So I think the biggest thing is just continuing to throw to him, continue to just do what it takes to have that chemistry."

Fantasy Tip: Harvin should immediately become a focal point of the offensive game plan, especially now that Sidney Rice (knee) is done for the year. When Harvin returns is unknown, but it's expected to be soon. He should be owned in all leagues.

Seahawks | O-line struggles to protect Russell Wilson

Tue, 29 Oct 2013 09:11:04 -0700

The Seattle Seahawks' patchwork offensive line allowed QB Russell Wilson to be sacked seven times in the team's 14-9 win over the St. Louis Rams in Week 8 Monday, Oct. 28. The run blocking wasn't much better in the victory. "We had a million problems in protection," head coach Pete Carroll said. "The Rams rushed like crazy and we did a ton of stuff to try to offset it, but nothing helped us." Seattle only had 135 yards of total offensive in the contest, with 80 of them coming on a passing touchdown to WR Golden Tate.

Fantasy Tip: It'll be at least a couple of weeks before Seattle gets Russell Okung and Breno Giacomini back, so it might be a continuous struggle to protect Wilson until then. This trend also isn't good for Marshawn Lynch.

Fri, 18 Oct 2013 09:59:35 -0700

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson was 18-for-29 with 235 yards and three touchdown passes in the team's Week 7 victory over the Arizona Cardinals Thursday, Oct. 17, and he finished the game with a 122.1 passer rating. "I don't know what we would do without him," head coach Pete Carroll said. "We would be a much different team. I don't know how you can measure it at this point. He has become such a special aspect of our team. He's instrumental to everything we do." It wasn't all good, though, as he fumbled three times and lost two of them and was sacked three times.

Seahawks | Russell Wilson has big game

Mon, 23 Sep 2013 09:41:21 -0700

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson threw for four touchdowns in the team's Week 3 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, and QB Tarvaris Jackson also threw for a touchdown and ran one in. Both quarterbacks combined for 331 yards and five touchdown passes and completed 21 of 29 throws. TE Zach Miller and WR Sidney Rice had two touchdowns each.

Seahawks | Russell Wilson vows to improve

Sun, 28 Jul 2013 19:57:24 -0700

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson is determined to improve upon his rookie season, and his work ethic, in the classroom and studying at home, continues to impress his teammates. "He knows this is his team," FS Earl Thomas said. "He's taken control back there. Even if you've played 10 years, eight years, he'll still get on you to tell you this is where you need to be to make this offense work. And you have to respect a guy like that."

Fantasy Tip: Wilson vaulted into QB1 status as the course of the season went on last year. Will he take it to another level or suffer a sophomore jinx? That remains to be seen. The potential loss of WR Percy Harvin (hip) for an extended period doesn't help, but then again he wasn't on the roster last season during Wilson's meteoric rise. Wilson will be drafted as a Top 10 fantasy quarterback.

Seahawks | Russell Wilson discusses decision-making

Wed, 12 Jun 2013 10:43:52 -0700

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson ranked fourth among quarterbacks in rushing attempts last season, but he's more of a scrambler than pure runner, according to ESPN.com writer Mike Sando. He led the NFL in time spent in the pocket per pass play (3.12 seconds) and average time before passing (4.18 seconds). Wilson received more opportunities to run late in the season, when Seattle incorporated read-option plays on offense. Sando doesn't recall Wilson taking an especially hard hit other than one against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 14. In a conversation on ESPN Radio show "Mike & Mike," Wilson commented on how he views his responsibilities when on the move:

"To be honest with you, I don't really like running. I'd rather throw the ball to guys and let the true playmakers make the plays. ..."

Fantasy Tip: Wilson may put extra stress on his offensive line, but he's certainly a dynamic passer who has succeeded in the face of plenty of adversity. It'll be interesting to see if he can continue to produce touchdowns at such a prolific rate without accumulating more yards, either in the air or on the ground, in 2013.

Seahawks | Russell Wilson not worried about read-option

Mon, 04 Feb 2013 10:46:20 -0800

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson said he is not worried about opponents figuring out the team's read-option offense because the team only runs 15 to 20 percent of their plays out of the formation. Wilson said he believes the formation is effective because the team likes to throw out of the formation. "Yeah, it's tough to stop," Wilson said. "I think the thing with us, and why it works so efficient for us, is we love throwing the ball out of the formation. We do a lot of things, a lot of play action, a lot of different looks."

Eagles | Playoffs may have changed Chip Kelly's mind

Thu, 17 Jan 2013 07:59:58 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly may have changed his mind about coaching at the pro level after watching Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson and San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick perform in the divisional round playoffs last weekend, according to former NFL head coach Tony Dungy. "Could it be that Chip Kelly watched the playoffs and watched Russell Wilson run a little bit of his read option in the spread offense, and watched Colin Kaepernick run a little bit more of it?" Dungy said. Dungy added he believes Kelly watched the playoffs thinking, "My offense is way farther advanced than that, and maybe if this is going through the NFL, it might not be so tough."
