Cardinals | Trevor Rosenthal showing more control

Mon, 18 May 2015 12:47:05 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals RP Trevor Rosenthal has only pitched out of the stretch this season, and the reliever has nearly cut his walk rate in half.

Fantasy Tip: Rosenthal has been dominant in the ninth this season. He has 13 saves with a 0.95 ERA, a 0.90 WHIP and a 10.9 K/9. Currently, the Cards are the best team in the National League, which should continue to yield plenty of save opportunities for Rosenthal, and he has the potential to finish the season as a top-tier closer.

Cardinals | Trevor Rosenthal out Monday

Tue, 05 May 2015 04:34:57 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals RP Trevor Rosenthal did not close Monday, May 4, against the Chicago Cubs even though it was a save situation.

Fantasy Tip: Rosenthal was out purely as manager Mike Matheny's choice, because the Cardinals completed three games against the Pittsburgh Pirates that all went to extra innings. Rosenthal should be back in the lineup Tuesday and remains one of the strongest closing options in all of baseball.

Cardinals | Trevor Rosenthal may rest Monday

Mon, 04 May 2015 07:30:45 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals RP Trevor Rosenthal has pitched three straight days and may need a breather Monday, May 4.

Fantasy Tip: Rosenthal blew his first save of the season Sunday, but he has been pretty good since he made the switch to pitching from the stretch at all times this spring. With Jordan Walden (biceps) on the 15-day DL, Matt Belisle could figure in to a save chance Monday. Pick him up in daily waiver leagues if you're save speculating.

Cardinals | Trevor Rosenthal less predictable

Mon, 06 Apr 2015 15:28:08 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals RP Trevor Rosenthal is trying to be less predictable with his pitches in 2015, especially after he gained more confidence in his changeup in the second half of last season. He mixed up his pitch sequences in his season debut en route to recording his first save Sunday, April 5. Rosenthal only had three outings in 72 appearances in 2014 in which he struck out all three hitters he faced.

Fantasy Tip: Rosenthal looked good in his season debut against the Chicago Cubs last night in striking out the side with relative ease. Control has always been the problem for the right-handed fireballer, and if his new pitching mechanics in the stretch can solve some of those issues, he could be an elite closer in 2015.

Cardinals | Trevor Rosenthal starts strong

Sun, 05 Apr 2015 23:41:42 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals RP Trevor Rosenthal struck out the side for his first save of the season opening night Sunday, April 5.

Fantasy Tip: Rosenthal needed only 16 pitches to dispose of his hitters. His offspeed stuff was not sharp at all, but his fastball location was very good. He struck out Chris Coghlan with a beautifully painted pitch on the bottom right corner of the strike zone. So far so good on his adjustments and focus on retiring the first batter of the inning. He's a top five closer in fantasy.

Cardinals | Trevor Rosenthal makes adjustment

Tue, 31 Mar 2015 07:57:04 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals RP Trevor Rosenthal has pitched exclusively from the stretch this spring to combat his control issues against his first batter last season. Rosenthal allowed a .323 batting average to the first hitters he faced last year, while everyone else hit just .156. Rosenthal pitched out of a windup with no runners on base, and pitching coach Derek Lilliquist said Rosenthal rushed his delivery. Rosenthal walked just one batter in five spring innings. "He looks as good as I've ever seen him," manager Mike Matheny said. Rosenthal has also worked on a new pitch he called a slider, but it behaves more like a cutter.

Fantasy Tip: Rosey is an elite closer if he harnesses the control that eluded him last season.

Cardinals | Trevor Rosenthal blows save

Tue, 19 Aug 2014 06:57:27 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals CL Trevor Rosenthal blew his fifth save of the season Monday, Aug. 18.

Fantasy Tip: It wasn't all his fault. He walked Billy Hamilton, who stole second and advanced to third due to an errant throw into the outfield. The infield moved in with one out, and Jay Bruce lined a ball past Matt Adams that could have been playable at normal depth. Rosenthal looked strong otherwise. Rosenthal is still in no danger of losing his spot, maybe just rested a few days.

Cardinals | Trevor Rosenthal remaining the closer

Sun, 17 Aug 2014 14:55:32 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals CL Trevor Rosenthal will remain the team's closer, according to manager Mike Matheny.

Fantasy Tip: He has allowed five walks and three earned runs in his last two appearances and may be wearing down after heavy usage. He's still worth keeping in your lineups.

Cardinals | Monitoring Trevor Rosenthal's usage

Mon, 11 Aug 2014 07:34:27 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals CL Trevor Rosenthal has been unavailable more frequently over the last couple of weeks because of heavy usage. Boston Red Sox RP Edward Mujica recently spoke with Rosenthal about taking more days off to avoid burning out.

Fantasy Tip: Rosenthal leads the majors with 35 saves, but the team has relied on him heavily because they've been in a lot of close games. Rosenthal's usage will probably slow up a bit in the next couple of weeks before the home stretch.
