Cardinals | Trevor Rosenthal out of spotlight

Tue, 19 Jul 2016 07:48:42 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals RP Trevor Rosenthal will not be used in high-leverage situations, according to manager Mike Matheny. RP Jonathan Broxton and RP Matthew Bowman could be used in such situations for now.

Fantasy Tip: Rosenthal has always been a closer that keeps you on the edge of your seat before ultimately nailing down the save. However, something is different this season. His offspeed stuff and fastball command haven't been good. Hitters have looked for the fastball and made hard contact. He has a 5.46 ERA, a 1.98 WHIP and 45 K's in 31 1/3 innings. He has only allowed three homers, which signals he may not be far off. However, his changeup and/or curveball have to return for him to be successful. That may not happen this season. It's tough to drop a guy with a 12.93 K/9, a career high, so stash him and hope he finds what he's lacking. Broxton and Bowman offer little in fantasy for now.

Cardinals | Trevor Rosenthal awaiting MRI results

Sat, 09 Jul 2016 12:43:54 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals RP Trevor Rosenthal (hamstring) underwent a precautionary MRI on Saturday, July 9, after leaving his team's game against the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday, July 8, with a spasm.

Fantasy Tip: It is going from bad to worse with Rosenthal, who was removed from the closer role after a horrid June. He can be dropped in most normal-sized leagues. His replacement, Seung-Hwan Oh, has been dominant for most of the first half and should be added in whatever leagues he might still be available. Oh has picked up a pair of saves since Rosenthal's demotion.

Cardinals | Trevor Rosenthal leaves with leg injury

Fri, 08 Jul 2016 22:12:34 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals RP Trevor Rosenthal (hamstring) was removed from the ninth inning against the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday, July 8, due to spasms in his hamstring. He walked one and allowed a run in 1/3 of an inning and was tagged with the loss.

Fantasy Tip: As if things weren't already bad enough for Rosenthal, the erstwhile closer has a leg injury. The team says he won't undergo an MRI, but they don't yet know the severity of the injury. Rosenthal should be jettisoned in all standard leagues, and those in deeper mixed can cut bait as well if they need a roster spot.

Cardinals | Trevor Rosenthal melts down

Sun, 03 Jul 2016 17:59:48 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals RP Trevor Rosenthal failed to record an out in a relief appearance against the Milwaukee Brewers Sunday, July 3, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk.

Fantasy Tip: Rosenthal seems to have lost all confidence, and there is a good chance he never reclaims the closer's job.

Cardinals | Trevor Rosenthal out as closer

Sat, 25 Jun 2016 18:54:24 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals RP Trevor Rosenthal is out as closer and will be used in a different role going forward, manager Mike Matheny said Saturday, June 25. RP Seung-Hwan Oh, RP Kevin Siegrist and RP Jonathan Broxton will all see save chances, according to Matheny.

Fantasy Tip: Oh has been outstanding this year and is your best bet if you are hunting for saves. However, Siegrist and Broxton could also be worth speculative adds in what is likely to be a messy situation for fantasy owners to deal with.

Cardinals | Trevor Rosenthal loses again

Fri, 24 Jun 2016 23:22:06 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals RP Trevor Rosenthal allowed a game-winning three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth against the Seattle Mariners on Friday, June 24. He failed to record an out.

Fantasy Tip: Oh, boy. More trouble for Rosenthal, who's now 0-2 with a 14.14 ERA and a 3.00 WHIP in June. Perhaps even worse, Friday marked the third time in 11 appearances this month that Rosenthal couldn't get a single out. It's hard to imagine Mike Matheny can keep deploying him in the ninth, which makes Seung Hwan Oh a compelling speculative addition.

Cardinals | Trevor Rosenthal holds on for 13th save

Mon, 20 Jun 2016 22:37:56 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals RP Trevor Rosenthal made things interesting yet again on Monday, June 20 - giving up a leadoff double to Chicago Cubs OF Albert Almora Jr., hitting pinch-hitter Chris Coghlan with a pitch and allowing a single to 2B Ben Zobrist - but forced a game-ending infield popup for the final out after C Yadier Molina made a stellar defensive play to retire Almora at third for the second out.

Fantasy Tip: Manager Mike Matheny continues to stand by his man, but Rosenthal isn't making it easy. The 26-year-old closer has only three clean outings this month and, as a result, a 12.00 ERA and 2.67 WHIP in nine June appearances. He also has a HBP each of his last two games as well. A closer change doesn't appear imminent yet based on Matheny's postgame comments, but owners could make a play for Kevin Siegrist if they have room on their roster to do so.

Cardinals | Trevor Rosenthal still the closer

Mon, 20 Jun 2016 06:50:47 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals RP Trevor Rosenthal would have pitched Sunday, June 20, if a save situation arose, according to manager Mike Matheny.

Fantasy Tip: Rosenthal has been really bad this year. He has a robust 1.91 WHIP thanks to 19 walks in 22 innings, but the main point of concern is he has allowed 23 hits. Teams are keying on his fastball because his secondary stuff is just not good. He used to have a pretty good changeup, but he hasn't been able to throw it consistently. He falls behind hitters and gets into trouble quite often. All that being said, if he can reel things in, he can still be one of the best five relievers in fantasy by the end of the year. If he doesn't do it soon, Seung Hwan Oh and his 1.77 ERA and 12.36 K/9 are waiting in the wings. Lefty Kevin Siegrist could vulture a few saves based on matchups as well. Both are worth owning, but Oh has the upper hand in mixed formats.

Cardinals | Trevor Rosenthal pulled

Sat, 18 Jun 2016 16:06:11 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals RP Trevor Rosenthal was pulled from a 3-2 game after he allowed two consecutive hits and hit a batter without recording an out Saturday, June 18.

Fantasy Tip: Kevin Siegrist came in and wasn't much better after squandering a couple of runs and the lead. Rosenthal has been awful of late, and this might signal a change. Seung Hwan Oh and Siegrist could be in line for saves, but Oh allowed two runs (one earned) today as well. Keep an eye on this situation in the coming days. Siegrist is a lefty and has struggled this season, which means Oh should be scooped up for save speculators.

Cardinals | Trevor Rosenthal closes it out

Sat, 11 Jun 2016 19:59:22 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals RP Trevor Rosenthal recorded the final two outs to pick up the save in a 5-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates Saturday, June 11.

Fantasy Tip: Control issues have led to an eventful year for Rosenthal, but he remains the closer for now and is still delivering excellent strikeout numbers. Unless St. Louis gives up on him, keep starting him.
