Texans | Tom Savage impressing in training camp

Sun, 07 Aug 2016 07:18:01 -0700

Houston Texans QB Tom Savage has had an impressive first week of training camp, according to head coach Bill O'Brien. "He's really worked hard to change his body, become stronger, become quicker, quicker release," O'Brien said. "He has a much better knowledge of our offense. It takes a while for that position. The only thing Tom needs is an opportunity. Tom is a good football player and he's put a lot of time in to get to where he is right now." Savage is competing with QBs Brandon Weeden and T.J. Yates to serve as the backup to QB Brock Osweiler.

Texans | Brandon Weeden contract details

Fri, 01 Apr 2016 13:31:16 -0700

Updating a previous report, Houston Texans QB Brandon Weeden re-signed to a two-year, $4 million contract Friday, April 1, according to a source. The move could lead to the release of QB Brian Hoyer.

Fantasy Tip: It would be a surprise at this point if Hoyer was not released. The Texans will start Brock Osweiler with Weeden backing him up. Teams like the Denver Broncos and New York Jets could take a chance on Hoyer, but he won't be in the QB1 conversation any time soon.

Sat, 09 Jan 2016 19:19:51 -0800

Houston Texans QB Brandon Weeden said he would "absolutely" like to return to the team next season.

Fantasy Tip: Weeden was one of four quarterbacks that saw playing time for the Texans this year, but the team's ong-term solution at quarterback probably isn't currently on the roster.

Texans | Brandon Weeden accounts for three TDs

Sun, 27 Dec 2015 15:41:35 -0800

Houston Texans QB Brandon Weeden went 15-for-24 for 200 yards and two touchdowns against the Tennessee Titans in Week 16. He also rushed for 11 yards and one touchdown on two carries during the game.

Fantasy Tip: Weeden played well in his first start for the Texans but likely will return to the bench if Brian Hoyer is cleared to play in the Week 17 game. Owners may want to avoid the Texans quarterback situation next week since there should be better options to use.

Texans | Brandon Weeden starting Sunday

Sun, 27 Dec 2015 07:46:38 -0800

Houston Texans QB Brandon Weeden will start Week 16's game against the Tennessee Titans, with recently-signed B.J. Daniels serving as the No. 2 quarterback. QB Brian Hoyer (concussion) has been ruled out.

Fantasy Tip: Weeden ($4,600, 9.2% of cap) went 11-for-18 for 105 yards and a touchdown in relief of T.J. Yates during Week 15's game against the Indianapolis Colts but he is not a recommended starting option in any fantasy format. Hoyer traveled with the team to Tennessee but wasn't cleared to resume playing.

Texans | Brian Hoyer will not play

Sat, 26 Dec 2015 07:35:13 -0800

Houston Texans QB Brian Hoyer (concussion) will not play against the Tennessee Titans in Week 16 because he still has not received clearance to play, according to a source. QB Brandon Weeden will serve as the starting quarterback for the team.

Fantasy Tip: Weeden ($4,600, 9.2% of cap) probably will not be asked to throw much during the game but does have some solid weapons to work with in the passing game. Weeden is not a strong fantasy option and could be avoided in most leagues.

Texans | Brandon Weeden solid in relief

Sun, 20 Dec 2015 14:50:14 -0800

Houston Texans QB Brandon Weeden went 11-for-18 for 105 yards and one touchdown against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 15. He entered the game after QB T.J. Yates (knee) suffered his knee injury.

Fantasy Tip: It is not known if Weeden will start next week, so owners should keep an eye out on the situation during practice. Weeden probably would not be a solid fantasy option this week against the Tennessee Titans if he receives the start.

Cowboys | Matt Cassel will start in Week 7

Wed, 14 Oct 2015 09:19:47 -0700

Dallas Cowboys QB Matt Cassel is expected to start in Week 7 against the New York Giants when they return from their bye week, according to a league source. QB Brandon Weeden was informed by the coaching staff that Cassel will start against the Giants. Cassel recently said he is now comfortable with the play book and can execute the offense. Weeden went just 5-for-15 on passes thrown more than five yards down the field in a loss in Week 5.

Fantasy Tip: Cassel ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) should give the Cowboys a better shot at stretching the field offensively, but he's unlikely to drastically increase the fantasy values of Dallas aerial weapons, mainly Terrance Williams. Cassel will be a low-end quarterback on FantasyScore for his season debut this year.

Tue, 13 Oct 2015 09:21:25 -0700

Dallas Cowboys QB Matt Cassel could start over QB Brandon Weeden in Week 7 against the New York Giants, according to executive vice president Stephen Jones.

Fantasy Tip: Cassel ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) is probably not an option to consider on FantasyScore after their Week 6 bye.

Cowboys | Brandon Weeden expected to keep job

Mon, 12 Oct 2015 12:30:39 -0700

Dallas Cowboys QB Brandon Weeden is expected to keep his starting quarterback job unless there is a change in thinking before the Week 7 game.

Fantasy Tip: Weeden has lost each of the three game he has started for the Cowboys and has not thrown for more than 246 yards in any of the games. He has completed 72.4% of his passes this season but most of them have been short throws. Owners should start looking for other options because Weeden will lose the job when Tony Romo returns.

Cowboys | Brandon Weeden out in Big D?

Sun, 11 Oct 2015 22:53:31 -0700

Dallas Cowboys QB Brandon Weeden could be out as the team's starting quarterback, as head coach Jason Garrett said Sunday, Oct. 11, that he will evaluate a quarterback change during the team's bye week.

Fantasy Tip: Weeden ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) has been a disaster, and he isn't worth using in Week 7 in FantasyScore whether he hangs onto the job or not.

Cowboys | Brandon Weeden takes care of ball

Sun, 04 Oct 2015 22:05:09 -0700

Dallas Cowboys QB Brandon Weeden completed 16 of his 26 pass attempts for 246 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in the Week 4 overtime loss against the New Orleans Saints, and he did not fumble.

Fantasy Tip: Weeden ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) and the Cowboys will look to regroup in Week 5 against a rested New England Patriots team coming off a bye.

Cowboys | Brandon Weeden to throw deeper?

Sat, 03 Oct 2015 12:13:16 -0700

Dallas Cowboys QB Brandon Weeden is expected to make deeper pass attempts, according to executive vice president Stephen Jones. Jones said Weeden will need to play less conservatively and threaten defenses more downfield, or the Cowboys will continue to see more pressure in the box.

Fantasy Tip: Weeden threw extremely efficiently in the Cowboys Week 3 loss to the Atlanta Falcons, but a lot of his throws were high-percentage throws, as Jones indicated. Weeden ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) is cheaper and has a good matchup against the New Orleans Saints, but he's not the most reliable play on FantasyScore.

Cowboys | Brandon Weeden needs to throw deep more

Sat, 03 Oct 2015 08:50:20 -0700

Dallas Cowboys QB Brandon Weeden needs to try to more deep passes because opponents may have more players close to the line of scrimmage if he continues with short passes, according to executive vice president Stephen Jones. Weeden has attempted only two passes of at least 15 yards and has not been able to compete either pass. His passes are traveling only an average of 4.8 yards per attempt, which is the lowest average in the NFL.

Fantasy Tip: Weeden ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) has been successful with his short passes but should try longer passes if he wants long-term success. Weeden could be a cheaper option for owners on FantasyScore to consider because the Saints defense has struggled at times this season.

Cowboys | Brandon Weeden plays it safe

Sun, 27 Sep 2015 22:05:09 -0700

Dallas Cowboys QB Brandon Weeden completed 22 of his 26 pass attempts for 232 yards, no touchdowns and an interception.

Fantasy Tip: Weeden ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) didn't make many mistakes, but he also didn't do much of anything for FantasyScore players. He isn't a recommended play for Week 4 against the New Orleans Saints.

Cowboys | Dallas owner praises Brandon Weeden

Tue, 22 Sep 2015 17:21:52 -0700

Dallas Cowboys QB Brandon Weeden has progressed in the eyes of owner Jerry Jones. Jones went as far as to say you won't see a more gifted passer than Weeden. "If he can basically prepare, be the starting quarterback, come in and execute and keep his head right, then I feel good about Weeden," Jones said.

Fantasy Tip: That's all well and good, but Weeden is not a starting fantasy quarterback. He's proven to be way much too unreliable for such a task. Although, being priced at just $5,000 and 10.0% of cap on FantasyScore, he might be worth a play if you want to spend more at other positions.

Cowboys | Brandon Weeden will be the guy

Mon, 21 Sep 2015 07:11:17 -0700

Dallas Cowboys QB Brandon Weeden will fill in if QB Tony Romo (clavicle) misses time as the team is not seeking to trade for a quarterback.

Fantasy Tip: Weeden ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) isn't a strong FantasyScore option against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 3.

Cowboys | Brandon Weeden solid in relief

Sun, 20 Sep 2015 21:05:30 -0700

Dallas Cowboys QB Brandon Weeden completed all seven of his pass attempts for 73 yards and a touchdown in the Week 2 win against the Philadelphia Eagles while subbing for the injured QB Tony Romo (clavicle).

Fantasy Tip: Weeden ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) is worth watching in future weeks, as Romo will miss eight to 10 weeks. Weeden is the starter for a while. While he had success, it wasn't in high-pressure situations. Weeden will be without Dez Bryant for at least another month and a half, so he isn't the most attractive FantasyScore option.

Cowboys | Brandon Weeden takes over in Big D

Sun, 20 Sep 2015 15:54:46 -0700

Dallas Cowboys QB Brandon Weeden will finish up the Week 2 game against the Philadelphia Eagles after QB Tony Romo (clavicle) suffered a fractured left clavicle.

Fantasy Tip: Weeden ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) will be the starter in Dallas in the immediate future, but FantasyScore players will likely want to avoid him, especially since he doesn't even have the luxury of throwing to Dez Bryant for at least several weeks.

Cowboys | Tony Romo could be game-time call

Fri, 31 Oct 2014 09:52:45 -0700

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (back) missed his third straight day of practice Friday, Oct. 31, and he'll have to be able to move better before being allowed to play in Week 9 against the Arizona Cardinals. Head coach Jason Garrett said the team doesn't need to know before Sunday, Nov. 2, if Romo can play. Romo has had treatment on his back all week, but he hasn't done any football activities. QB Brandon Weeden would receive the start if Romo can't play.

Fantasy Tip: An entire week of missed practice typically doesn't bode well for a player's status on Sunday. Romo ($7,300; 14.6% of cap) is a big risk at FantasyScore, even if he suits up against the Cardinals. You can ignore Weeden if he plays.

Cowboys | Tony Romo sitting out

Wed, 29 Oct 2014 09:51:09 -0700

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (back) is not participating in practice Wednesday, Oct. 29. QB Brandon Weeden is working with the first-team offense during practice.

Fantasy Tip: Romo could be a game-time decision for Week 9, so owners should track his situation during the week. Romo costs $7,300 on FantasyScore, but owners may want to use their money on a healthier option. Weeden would get the start if Romo is not able to play and would be a desperation sleeper option for owners.

Cowboys | Brandon Weeden not concerned with Kyle Orton situation

Tue, 08 Jul 2014 13:59:29 -0700

Dallas Cowboys QB Brandon Weeden is working on learning the team's offense and getting better, and is not concerned with the situation surrounding QB Kyle Orton. "I'm going to go about my business the same way regardless. I haven't met Kyle, so I can't really speak on it, but whatever he decides to do it's kind of out of my control," Weeden said. "So what I'm worried about is, if I'm running with the twos out there, do my job to make the twos better. I want to make the team better any way I can, so it doesn't change my mindset or the way I feel about it."

Cowboys | Brandon Weeden seeing first-team reps

Tue, 17 Jun 2014 11:05:40 -0700

Dallas Cowboys QB Brandon Weeden is taking first-team repetitions in the offense at minicamp Tuesday, June 17, with QB Tony Romo (back) recovering from offseason back surgery and QB Kyle Orton absent while contemplating retirement. Weeden is being given the chance to learn the team's offense, and quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson said the team is comfortable with Weeden serving as the backup. Head coach Jason Garrett has been very impressed with Weeden this offseason.

Fantasy Tip: Weeden looks like he'll be the team's backup behind Romo if Orton calls it quits this offseason. Unless Romo is injured in-season, Weeden shouldn't be on fantasy rosters.
