If the Boston Red Sox bring back free-agent SS Stephen Drew (Red Sox), they would be confident with SS Xander Bogaerts playing third base after seeing him there in the postseason. "I think we're completely comfortable with him playing either position," manager John Farrell said Monday, Dec. 9.

The Boston Red Sox are not thinking about locking up 21-year-old SS/3B Xander Bogaerts to a long-term contract, general manager Ben Cherington confirmed earlier this month. Cherington would like to see Bogaerts' development through the 2014 season before opening up the checkbook. Bogaerts is not eligible for arbitration until 2017 and free agency until 2020.

Boston Red Sox SS Xander Bogaerts will make his major league debut at shortstop Tuesday, Aug. 20, allowing SS Stephen Drew to take the day off. "We're looking forward to the Bogaerts era getting underway," manager John Farrell said. Farrell said he'll use Bogaerts to give other players a day off down the stretch. "Xander has over 500 plate appearances already in Triple-A," Farrell said. "So it's not like he comes to us and there's a mandate that says he's got to continue to get everyday at-bats." There will not be a platoon situation at shortstop between Bogaerts and Drew. Drew is hitting only .193 in 114 at-bats against left-handed pitchers this year, and Bogaerts hit .298 with a .926 OPS against lefties at Triple-A Pawtucket.
Fantasy Tip: Bogaerts will play, but not every day. Owning him in deep mixed leagues is worth it, but it may be frustrating to own him in shallow leagues this year. Next year will be a different story, as he should be the team's starting shortstop.

Boston Red Sox INF Brock Holt and C Ryan Lavarnway will be optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket Monday, Aug. 19, to make room on the roster for SS Xander Bogaerts and C David Ross (concussion), who will be activated from the disabled list. Also, P Rubby De La Rosa will be sent to Pawtucket.
Fantasy Tip: Bogaerts should be playing regularly either at shortstop or third base and is worth owning in mostly all formats.

The Boston Red Sox have called up SS Xander Bogaerts from Triple-A Pawtucket.
Fantasy Tip: Bogaerts figures to see considerable time at shortstop and third base. Their top prospect has hit .297-15-67 across two levels of the minors this season. He was hitting .284-9-32 in 225 Triple-A at-bats. There is some adjustment to the majors to be expected, but he's worth picking up in most formats.
