Rockies | Chris Rusin to DL, Tony Wolters back

Tue, 14 Jun 2016 14:05:28 -0700

Colorado Rockies SP Chris Rusin (shoulder) was placed on the disabled list with a left shoulder strain Tuesday, June 14, while RP Miguel Castro was called up from the minors. C Tony Wolters (concussion) was activated from the 7-day concussion list and C Dustin Garneau was optioned to Class AAA.

Fantasy Tip: Rusin had a 4.12 ERA and 1.33 WHIP in 12 outings (seven starts) for the Rockies. He didn't carry much value outside of NL-only formats and as a daily matchup play away from Coors Field. Wolters returns as the backup to Nick Hundley, but he's more of a defensive-minded catcher and was hitting a mere .217 with no home runs and 11 RBI.

Rockies | Chris Rusin earns shutout win

Thu, 09 Jun 2016 03:37:22 -0700

Colorado Rockies SP Chris Rusin allowed three hits in six innings Wednesday, June 8, in a 1-0 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. It was his first win since April 13. Rusin also earned his first win in seven starts this year since moving to the rotation April 30.

Fantasy Tip: Rusin needed the help of four relievers to earn the victory. He may yet emerge as a fine starter in the rotation, but for now give Rusin some time on the bench to stretch out and get used to starting. He may be worth picking up in a deeper league for pitching help as needed.

Rockies | Chris Rusin loses again

Sat, 04 Jun 2016 00:09:29 -0700

Colorado Rockies SP Chris Rusin allowed four runs -- three earned -- on four hits over seven innings in a 4-0 loss to the San Diego Padres. Rusin has now dropped four consecutive decisions.

Fantasy Tip: Since joining the rotation in early May, Rusin is 0-4 with a 6.00 ERA and a 1.79 WHIP in six starts. Despite not pitching that badly Friday night, he gave up a three-run bomb to Matt Kemp and that was enough. He hasn't been awful in his four most recent starts, but even those in NL-only leagues would be hard pressed to justify carrying him on their roster.

Rockies | Rockies altering weekend rotation

Fri, 27 May 2016 15:31:02 -0700

Colorado Rockies SP Eddie Butler will pitch against the San Francisco Giants Saturday, May 28, and SP Chris Rusin will be pushed back to start against the Giants Sunday, May 29.

Fantasy Tip: With both outings taking place at hitter-friendly Coors Field, neither Butler or Rusin are viable options in the majority of fantasy formats. After all, Butler has a career 6.70 ERA through 48 1/3 innings at Coors, and Rusin has a 5.95 mark through 84 2/3 innings.

Rockies | Jorge De La Rosa bumped from rotation

Wed, 25 May 2016 14:36:07 -0700

Colorado Rockies SP Jorge De La Rosa will be moved to the bullpen for now, according to manager Walt Weiss. SP Chris Rusin will move into the starting rotation.

Fantasy Tip: It was only a matter of time for De La Rosa, who was sporting a horrendous 11.41 ERA and 2.28 WHIP in six starts for the Rockies this year after getting blasted by the Red Sox in his first start off the DL last night. He shouldn't be owned anywhere. Rusin has a 3.93 ERA in four starts for Colorado this year. He should only be an option for the desperate in NL-only leagues with a career 5.9 strikeouts per nine innings.

Rockies | Chris Rusin starting vs. Arizona Friday

Mon, 25 Apr 2016 14:10:10 -0700

Colorado Rockies SP Chris Rusin will start against the Arizona Diamondbacks Friday, April 29. In a corresponding move, SP Jordan Lyles was optioned to the minors Monday, April 25.

Fantasy Tip: Rusin has pitched out of the bullpen to start the season, so he likely won't be stretched out enough to pitch deep into the game Friday, which is an obvious limitation to his fantasy value Friday. Additionally, he owns a 5.21 ERA through 42 career starts and will toss any home games at Coors Field. View Rusin as a desperation start in all fantasy formats until he proves otherwise. Similarly, Lyles, who owns a career 5.18 ERA through 570 1/3 innings, can be dropped in all leagues.

Rockies | Jon Gray won't be ready

Thu, 24 Mar 2016 11:47:59 -0700

Colorado Rockies SP Jon Gray (abdomen) will not be ready for the start of the regular season due to an abdominal strain. Gray said he won't be able to pitch in a game for a couple of weeks. He had a 3.86 ERA in five spring training outings. SPs Chris Rusin (finger), Christian Bergman and David Hale are candidates for the fifth rotation spot now that Gray is hurt.

Fantasy Tip: Gray, a former first-round pick, could be ready by late April. Keep tabs on his recovery timeline. There is strikeout stuff here, but he's been too up and down to rely on with any kind of consistency to this point. More patience is required, but he's a prospect to stash in NL-only and keeper leagues.

Rockies | Chris Rusin to throw live BP

Tue, 22 Mar 2016 22:21:25 -0700

Colorado Rockies SP Chris Rusin (finger) is expected to throw a second live batting practice session Wednesday, March 23. He hasn't pitched due to inflammation in his left middle finger.

Fantasy Tip: Rusin is currently on the outside looking in for the fifth rotation spot. He might work in middle relief while serving as a possible emergency starter. However, he is only worth using in the deepest of NL-only rotisserie leagues for help in the ERA and WHIP categories.

Rockies | Chris Rusin able to play catch

Wed, 09 Mar 2016 23:35:05 -0800

Colorado Rockies SP Chris Rusin (finger) was able to play catch Wednesday, March 9, for the first time in six days, as he has been sidelined due to an inflamed left middle finger.

Fantasy Tip: Rusin is in the mix for the No. 5 spot in the rotation, but he'll need to get in there and pitch well soon if he wants to unseat Jon Gray or David Hale.

Dodgers | Adrian Gonzalez out of Sunday lineup

Sun, 27 Sep 2015 11:51:49 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers 1B Adrian Gonzalez (back) is not starting Sunday, Sept. 27, against the Colorado Rockies. 1B Scott Van Slyke is batting fourth against Colorado Rockies SP Chris Rusin.

Fantasy Tip: Odds are Gonzalez ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) may have been held out anyway due to a lefty pitcher, but back trouble just cements his spot on the bench for the weekend. Van Slyke ($3,100, 6.2% of cap) doesn't have the numbers to justify the FantasyScore spot.
