Astros | Evan Gattis on the board

Mon, 13 Apr 2015 21:04:31 -0700

Houston Astros C/OF Evan Gattis had his first hit Monday, April 13, since Sept. 6 of last year. It snapped a skid of going 0-for-37 with 17 strikeouts, including an 0-for-23 slump with 13 strikeouts this year.

Fantasy Tip: Gattis' ($4,400, 8.8% of cap) slow start to 2015 is concerning for his owners. Hopefully his hit Monday night can spark him, but a matchup against A's starter Kendall Graveman may be another tough matchup for Gattis at FantasyScore Tuesday.

Astros | Evan Gattis off to rough start

Thu, 09 Apr 2015 17:07:28 -0700

Houston Astros C/OF Evan Gattis went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts in the loss to the Cleveland Indians Thursday, April 9, for the second straight game, which gives him eight strikeouts in eight straight plate appearances to start the 2015 season. Gattis is 0-for-11 in the first three games of the year. He entered the season with 178 strikeouts in 723 career at-bats.

Fantasy Tip: Gattis ($5,100, 10.2% of cap) provides daily gamers with plenty of pop, but he also swings and misses frequently. It's still too early to be concerned if you own him in standard leagues, too. However, you might want to avoid him until he gets on the board in 2015.

Astros | Evan Gattis set to take batting practice

Sun, 22 Mar 2015 07:40:29 -0700

Houston Astros C/OF Evan Gattis (wrist) is feeling good and will take live batting practice Sunday, March 22, according to manager A.J. Hinch.

Fantasy Tip: Gattis has high-end power potential at a weak fantasy position, and he has relocated to a hitter-friendly ballpark. Add that Gattis is projected to receive near everyday at-bats and not spend much time behind the plate, and there is a lot to like about him in the early middle rounds. This injury is considered minor, but continue to check back for updates and monitor his progress leading up to opening day.

Astros | Evan Gattis has no structural damage

Fri, 20 Mar 2015 09:51:31 -0700

Houston Astros C/OF Evan Gattis (wrist) took roughly 15 to 20 swings off a tee Friday, March 20, and said he was pain-free. He underwent an MRI exam Thursday, March 19, that showed no structural damage in his wrist.

Fantasy Tip: This is pretty good news for Gattis, who relies heavily on power as part of his game. If he doesn't have any setbacks moving forward, he should be able to progress to playing in some spring games soon. If healthy, Gattis' value heading into the 2015 is high, as his power should translate well to the American League and a hitter-friendly park. The fact that he won't be catching in Houston makes him more attractive, as well, as it should keep him healthier.

Astros | Evan Gattis to swing soon

Thu, 19 Mar 2015 11:06:33 -0700

Houston Astros C/OF Evan Gattis (wrist), who is day-to-day with pain in his right wrist, has yet to be cleared to swing a bat. However, manager A.J. Hinch is optimistic that Gattis will make progress this weekend. "He didn't make the trip. We're continuing to evaluate him every day. Wrists are sort of day-to-day when it comes to his activity level. I don't think he's planning on hitting today. We're hoping to introduce the tee and soft toss over the next day or two to see where his wrist tolerance is. For now, we're going to hold off for the day," Hinch said. Gattis has been able to do everything but hit in camp.

Fantasy Tip: Gattis' wrist issue is definitely worth monitoring, as wrist issues can often sap power, which is Gattis' best skill. Assuming he's ready for the season, Gattis is a rising fantasy commodity with a switch to the American League and a hitter-friendly park. The fact that he'll have catcher and outfield eligibility is a huge plus, too.

Astros | Evan Gattis not cleared to swing

Tue, 17 Mar 2015 13:27:58 -0700

Houston Astros C/OF Evan Gattis (wrist) hasn't been cleared to swing a bat and there is no timetable for his return as he deals with pain in his right wrist. Gattis was scratched from the spring game Sunday, March 15. However, he did some defensive work Monday, March 16, and plans to do more outfield drills Tuesday, March 17. "He's seen the doctor and we're going to keep evaluating him day to day," manager A.J. Hinch said. "He seems to be progressing nicely. We're going to ramp up his activities a little bit over the next couple of days, but he won't be doing a ton of activity. … We have the off-day (on Wednesday) and then we'll see how he feels on Thursday."

Fantasy Tip: It's a bit of concern for Gattis, especially since his game relies so heavily on his power stroke, which could be affected by wrist issues. Until we know more about the injury or that it's serious, though, his draft stock shouldn't be affected. Gattis is in line for serious production with his move to the AL in a hitter's park. It will also help that he's no longer catching.

Astros | Evan Gattis uncomfortable in left field

Mon, 09 Mar 2015 15:04:22 -0700

Houston Astros C/OF Evan Gattis played left field for the first time this spring Monday, March 9, and admitted he still is not that comfortable fielding the position. "I think he's a better outfielder than he gets credit," Manager A.J. Hinch said. "Insecurities in players come out of when you're not comfortable with the volume that you've spent out there. It's one of the reasons we gave him primarily left field as an area of focus at the beginning of camp. It's not a glaring weakness as some people might portray, but we're going to have to let him get some experience in order to get him comfortable."

Fantasy Tip: The Astros will accept a few defensive hiccups, as long as Gattis is handling the stick well. His catcher eligibility is the most significant appeal of his fantasy stock, as Gattis has a real chance to pace the position in home runs and finish as a top-five fantasy backstop. Target Gattis in the early middle rounds of drafts for his immense power upside.

Astros | Evan Gattis to play OF early in spring

Fri, 20 Feb 2015 16:08:52 -0800

Houston Astros C/OF Evan Gattis is expected to get an early look this spring in left field, according to manager A.J. Hinch. Gattis is expected to see work at first base later in the spring. Gattis played 48 games in left field for the Atlanta Braves in 2013. "Seeing he's played (48) games in the outfield a couple of years ago, that's a faster comfort level for him," Hinch said. "He's been working hard this winter in the outfield -- he told me that. I just see that as a better fit early to get into camp."

Fantasy Tip: Gattis will be very valuable this year with multi-positional eligibility, but he mainly will be used as a power-hitting catching option for fantasy squads. The move to the American League and hitter-friendly Minute Maid Park only boosts Gattis' value. However, you'll need to plan around a weak contact rate and plenty of strikeouts.
