Indians | Lock up Yan Gomes with six-year deal

Sat, 29 Mar 2014 18:39:49 -0700

The Cleveland Indians and C Yan Gomes agreed to terms on a six-year deal worth $23 million Saturday, March 29, according to a source. The deal also includes two club options.

Fantasy Tip: The team is obviously happy with what they see from Gomes, and it has been customary for Cleveland to lock its long-term components into place since the mid-1990's. Gomes will take over as the everyday catcher this season, and fantasy owners can safely rely upon him as a low-end No. 1 receiver in all mixed formats.

Indians | Versatility of Carlos Santana helps team

Wed, 12 Feb 2014 18:18:53 -0800

Cleveland Indians C Carlos Santana worked closely with former big league 3B Fernando Tatis in the Dominican Republic over the winter, logging 30 games in winter ball for Escogido. This spring, Santana will continue to train at third base, and he will also serve as the backup catcher behind C Yan Gomes. Manager Terry Francona, general manager Chris Antonetti and Santana had a meeting Wednesday, Feb. 12, to discuss a plan for Santana's spring. The Indians want the switch-hitting Santana in the lineup on a regular basis, and if he is not the regular third baseman, they'd like him to hit against left-handed pitching, since 3B Lonnie Chisenhall struggled mightily against southpaws in 2013.

Indians | Carlos Santana to play 3B

Wed, 04 Dec 2013 14:32:03 -0800

Cleveland Indians C Carlos Santana will play some third base in the Dominican Republic Winter League this offseason, but manage Terry Francona described it as more of an experiment than anything. "He's going to go over there and play a little third, just to see. He came up as a third baseman, but I think he's about eight years removed. It can't hurt anything. He wanted to get some at-bats anyway. If he wants to go over there and do that, all that can really happen is positive," Francona said.

Santana was used more as a designated hitter and first baseman with C Yan Gomes emerging as a better defensive catcher last season. Santana expressed late last year that serving as the DH wasn't ideal for him. "We don't want him to be a full-time DH," Francona said. "It's actually kind of a unique situation. His ability to move around impacts everybody else. His bat, we want it right in the middle of our batting order. And his ability to play first and catch, that's kind of a unique skillset. The more positions he can play, it just allows us to get more bats into the lineup. He's open to it, so we're willing to be open also."

Indians | Lou Marson consults top doc

Wed, 12 Jun 2013 16:20:30 -0700

Cleveland Indians C Lou Marson (shoulder) met with Dr. James Andrews about his ailing right shoulder, according to manager Terry Francona.

Fantasy Tip: It sounds like recovery isn't going as hoped. The Tribe has already pulled Marson off his rehab assignment. Yan Gomes will continue to serve as the backup catcher and could carry value in AL-only leagues for a while.
