Redskins | Silas Redd could have serious injury

Fri, 14 Aug 2015 09:13:31 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Silas Redd (knee) could have tears to the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his knee, according to head coach Jay Gruden. Redd has been competing for the third running back spot behind RBs Alfred Morris and Matt Jones. Redd will undergo an MRI exam Friday, Aug. 14.

Fantasy Tip: This injury won't have much impact on the fantasy outlook for Washington's running backs, but it does mean that Morris and Jones will likely be the main backs handling touches in this backfield all season long.

Redskins | Alfred Morris has played consistently

Wed, 08 Jul 2015 15:14:33 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Alfred Morris has rushed for at least 1,000 yards and seven touchdowns in each of his first three seasons. On average, Morris has rushed for 1,320.6 yards and 9.3 touchdowns.

Fantasy Tip: Unfortunately, Morris is one of the least used starting running backs in the passing game in the NFL. He's in the RB1 conversation in standard leagues, but in PPR leagues his value lessens.

Redskins | Alfred Morris the guy, likes the offense

Wed, 27 May 2015 08:15:53 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Alfred Morris has been declared the feature back by Redskins head coach Jay Gruden. Washington added third-round draft pick RB Matt Jones, which fueled speculation about Morris' job security. Gruden said Jones adds depth and that it is important to have several capable running backs. Morris said he likes the power-running attack that will be mixed into the Redskins' current zone-blocking system. The outside zone plays will not be removed from the playbook, and the new approach will allow Morris to run downhill more frequently. "I feel I'm better at downhill plays anyway," he said. "You know what's coming. It's a knockout, drag-out style of play. I don't shy away from contact. It's right up my alley. I thoroughly enjoy it."

Fantasy Tip: Morris typically comes off the field in clear passing situations, so he is best reserved for non-PPR drafts. Consider him in the neighborhood of Round 4 of 12-teamers in standard-scoring leagues. Jones is a handcuff and a late-round flier in his own right.

Redskins | Alfred Morris auditioning for new team?

Wed, 20 May 2015 09:03:38 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Alfred Morris enters the final year of his current deal, according to Spotrac.com. The Redskins selected RB Matt Jones in the third round of the NFL draft, which could signal an impending departure of Morris in 2016.

Fantasy Tip: Morris has been a workhorse for the Redskins in the last three years. His load was reduced under head coach Jay Gruden in 2015, which isn't a bad thing for a running back entering an age-27 offseason next year. Morris' current value is somewhat murky, but he's safely an RB3 in standard scoring.

Redskins | Matt Jones loves the offense

Sun, 17 May 2015 19:18:21 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Matt Jones said that he loves the offense and has a chip on his shoulder after not being used properly while in college. "My college career wasn't what I wanted it to be (because) of the offense I was in," Jones said Saturday, May 16. "I love (Washington's) offense. I love getting downhill. I think that's what they drafted me for. I can add more size, more catching out of the backfield, more blocking. I feel like I can do it all and complement Alfred Morris at the same time."

Fantasy Tip: Jones has been earning his share of praise already, and while he is going to be a backup to Alfred Morris, it sounds like he will earn some touches of his own. He is worth a late-round flier in all formats, and he is smart insurance policy for Morris owners.

Redskins | Alfred Morris may land new deal

Thu, 14 May 2015 06:58:03 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Alfred Morris has a 50% chance to land a contract extension with the team, in the opinion of beat writer John Keim. Morris is in the final year of his contract.

Fantasy Tip: Morris has drawn scrutiny because he's not a good receiver and won't play on third down a lot. However, he's still one of the best pure rushers in the league and is a mid-to-low RB1.

Redskins | Alfred Morris still the lead back

Sun, 03 May 2015 16:54:32 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Alfred Morris's role won't be impacted by rookie RB Matt Jones, according to head coach Jay Gruden. "Alfred's still the running back here," Gruden said. "He's had three great seasons and that won't change."

Fantasy Tip: Morris has topped 1,000 yards and managed at least seven touchdowns in each of his first three seasons, and based on Gruden's comments, he is safe pick as a high-end RB2.

Redskins | Company for Alfred Morris?

Fri, 06 Mar 2015 21:46:11 -0800

Washington Redskins RB Alfred Morris could find himself in a crowded backfield in 2015, as the Redskins are one of seven teams interested in free-agent RB C.J. Spiller (Bills).

Fantasy Tip: Morris is not a great pass catcher out of the backfield, something Spiller would certainly add. Long-term keeper owners of Morris want this news to go away and Spiller to end up elsewhere. A Spiller addition likely means Morris becomes more of an RB2 or flex fantasy play rather than a low-end RB1.

Redskins | Alfred Morris virtually non-existent

Sun, 07 Dec 2014 20:28:59 -0800

Washington Redskins RB Alfred Morris carried eight times for just six yards in the Week 14 game against the St. Louis Rams. He also had one reception for 11 yards.

Fantasy Tip: That's not what fantasy owners in weekly leagues were looking for, and certainly not what FantasyScore owners expected. He'll look to rebound in Week 16 against the Dallas Cowboys. He had 18 carries for 73 yards and a score against Dallas on the road Oct. 27.

Redskins | Alfred Morris no longer overthinking

Mon, 24 Nov 2014 10:26:11 -0800

Washington Redskins RB Alfred Morris, who ran 21 times for 126 yards in a loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Week 12, gained most of his yardage after contact and entered the game against the Niners averaging 1.95 yards after contact. He's averaging 5.39 yards per carry in the last three games, according to ESPN Stats & Information. "I stopped hesitating," Morris said of his improved running. "I was trying to see too much." Week 12 was Morris' first 100-yard effort of the year, and he's fifth in rushing with 826 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Morris' matchup against SF looked to be a tough one, but his effort proved otherwise. Heading into Week 13 against the Indianapolis Colts, who allow 21.39 fantasy points to backs on average, Morris should be a wise play at FantasyScore.

Redskins | Alfred Morris tops century mark

Sun, 23 Nov 2014 20:42:46 -0800

Washington Redskins RB Alfred Morris averaged 6.0 yards per attempt on 21 carries in the Week 12 game against the San Francisco 49ers. It was his first 100-yard game of the season, and first since Nov. 7, 2013, against the Minnesota Vikings. "I stopped trying to think too much," Morris said Sunday, Nov. 23. "I said this weeks ago: I was thinking too much. I've been playing this game since I was five. I know how to be a runner. I just stopped thinking and stopped trying to make things happen that weren't there."

Fantasy Tip: Morris ripped off four long runs of 30, 22, 16 and 22 against a decent 49ers defense. He has 92 or more rushing yards over the past three games, and he has found the end zone four times in the past four games. He has re-emerged as a must-start in FantasyScore, regardless of competition.

Redskins | Alfred Morris scores pair of TDs

Sun, 02 Nov 2014 18:15:40 -0800

Washington Redskins RB Alfred Morris carried 19 times for 92 yards with a pair of touchdowns in the Week 9 game against the Minnesota Vikings. He also had two receptions for 17 yards and he was targeted three times.

Fantasy Tip: Morris had one of his best days of the season, and it might have been partly helped by the fact Robert Griffin III was back under center so defenses couldn't stack the box against the less threatening Kirk Cousins or Colt McCoy.

Redskins | Alfred Morris probable

Sat, 25 Oct 2014 15:32:56 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Alfred Morris (ankle) practiced Saturday, Oct. 25, and is probable for Week 8 Monday, Oct. 27.

Fantasy Tip: Morris ($6,100; 12.2% of your cap) is a solid RB2 on FantasyScore this week, but he faces a tough matchup against the upstart Dallas Cowboys.

Redskins | Alfred Morris practices in full

Thu, 23 Oct 2014 14:55:40 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Alfred Morris (ankle) practiced in full Thursday, Oct. 23.

Fantasy Tip: Morris tweaked his ankle in Week 7, but it doesn't appear to be a serious injury, and he should play Monday night against the Dallas Cowboys. However, he's a sketchy option at FantasyScore for $6,100 (12.2% of cap) against Dallas' improved run defense. Morris also doesn't catch a lot of passes, which may make it tough for him to return value.

Redskins | Alfred Morris to return

Sun, 19 Oct 2014 11:10:16 -0700

Updating a previous report, Washington Redskins RB Alfred Morris (ankle) will return to the team's Week 7 game.

Redskins | Alfred Morris leaves early

Sun, 19 Oct 2014 10:42:12 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Alfred Morris (ankle) left the game early in Week 7 because of an ankle injury and is considered questionable to return.

Fantasy Tip: The severity of Morris' injury is not known at this point, so owners will need to watch for an update. Roy Helu likely will receive most of the work while Morris is out and could be a solid pickup on FantasyScore depending on the price.

Redskins | Alfred Morris's production down

Fri, 17 Oct 2014 13:22:06 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Alfred Morris is 10th in the league with 386 rushing yards (3.98 yards per carry), but he entered the season averaging 4.73 yards per carry. In his defense, the Redskins have faced good run defenses that often have five defenders on the line. Washington's offensive line has also had problems communicating when a defense disguises their looks. Morris averaged 1.95 yards after contact in his first two years, but he's averaging 1.71 yards after contact this year, which ranks him 21st in the NFL. This is where the zone read had helped him in the past; He averaged 4.98 yards per carry on the zone read on 97 carries while at 4.7 yards on his other 514 carries. And finally, the blocking of the offensive line has been subpar, and they have struggled to get off double teams and reach the linebackers. Also, the tight ends and receivers are forced to block much more in an outside zone game.

Fantasy Tip: Clearly, not all the blame can be placed on Morris. Facing defenses that they match up better against is a start. Although that won't come immediately this weekend against the Tennessee Titans, Morris has a better shot to return profit on his $6,700 FantasyScore price.

Redskins | Redskins misusing Alfred Morris?

Thu, 09 Oct 2014 20:02:35 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Alfred Morris and the running game haven't been used properly at times this season, according to head coach Jay Gruden. "Some days when you don't play very well, you abandon it too quickly," Gruden said. "Some days you don't abandon it quick enough."

Fantasy Tip: Morris' carries have fluctuated throughout the season, and the end result has been his yardage totals dropping progressively in every game. Until the Redskins establish some type of offensive identity, it is tough to trust Morris at FantasyScore.

Redskins | Alfred Morris listed as probable

Wed, 24 Sep 2014 10:59:04 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Alfred Morris (knee) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Sept. 24, and is listed as probable for Week 4.

Fantasy Tip: Morris should be able to play in Week 4 despite his minor injury. He has been able to post solid numbers so far this season and should be a starting option for owners in most fantasy leagues. He costs $7,700 on FantasyScore this week and should be a good option to use against the New York Giants.

Washington Redskins RB Alfred Morris (knee) fully participated in practice Monday, Sept. 22. The team participated in a jog-through Monday.

Sun, 21 Sep 2014 11:17:27 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Alfred Morris (knee) suffered a knee injury during the team's Week 3 game but will be able to return to the game.

Redskins | Alfred Morris could catch 20-25 passes

Thu, 14 Aug 2014 20:33:02 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Alfred Morris could catch between 20-25 passes this season, according to head coach Jay Gruden.

Fantasy Tip: While Morris is going to see some extra work in the passing game, 20-25 catches doesn't change is value much, even in PPR leagues. Consider him a RB2.

Redskins | Alfred Morris putting extra work in

Tue, 12 Aug 2014 22:02:14 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Alfred Morris has spent the offseason working on his receiving skills, and each day before practice he has worked with running backs coach Randy Jordan throwing passes to him. Jordan has been tutoring Morris on the finer details of route running.

Fantasy Tip: If Morris can become more consistent as a receiver, he could be even more valuable for fantasy owners.

Redskins | Alfred Morris busted out long runs

Fri, 11 Jul 2014 07:12:46 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Alfred Morris led the NFL with 10 rushes of 20 or more yards in 2013.

Fantasy Tip: Morris was tied for fifth in 2012 with nine. The likelihood of that momentum continuing took a hit when zone-blocking disciple Kyle Shanahan left his offensive coordinator post and the 'Skins shifted to Jay Gruden's pass-happy attack. There are concerns that Morris will drop off this year in the new system, but Morris remains a solid RB2 with a smidge of receptions upside.

Redskins | Robert Griffin III praises Alfred Morris

Thu, 10 Jul 2014 11:07:41 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III thinks RB Alfred Morris is the biggest weapon on the team's offense. "I think everyone would lean towards DeSean or Pierre or Jordan Reed," Griffin III said when asked who the biggest weapon in the Redskins' offense is. "I think it's Alfred. With him, defenses have to make a decision whether to puts guys in the box to stop him or leave the box light and allow Alfred to go between the tackles and lure in the safeties. I think it will be interesting to see what defenses do against him."

Fantasy Tip: There is every reason to believe that Morris will benefit from the addition of DeSean Jackson to the offense and a healthy Robert Griffin III. Morris should return to top form in 2014.

It's not like he was a big hyped guy coming out of college, so I don't think people started to even know his name until probably halfway through the year last year," Shanahan said. "But he's a good player so more and more people are noticing him and he doesn't draw attention to himself so he doesn't get any extra attention that way."

Redskins | Not giving up on running game

Fri, 11 Oct 2013 14:21:22 -0700

The Washington Redskins remain committed to RB Alfred Morris and the running game, despite the fact that they are averaging only 22.25 running plays per game compared to 32.43 last season. Morris' 5.3 yards per carry in 2013 are higher than his first four games last season, but he's only averaging 14 carries per contest, and his 296 rushing yards ranks him as tied for 16th in the league. Two blowout losses forced the 'Skins to abandon the running game early.

"We believe in the running game," head coach Mike Shanahan said. "We always believe we're going to have a great game plan, and usually teams that can run the football have a lot of success. We always have that philosophy and hopefully this week, we can get back to where we've been running the football, and play-action game and those types of things." RB Roy Helu took over when Morris was injured in Week 4 and had 13 carries for 41 yards. Morris' ribs are "a little" sore, but he expects to play in Week 6 against the Dallas Cowboys.

Fantasy Tip: The Cowboys could present a nice opportunity for the 'Skins to get the ground game moving in the right direction if the passing game can keep Dallas back on their heels enough to open some running lanes. Morris is a good play. Helu could also see enough work but is more of a handcuff option for Morris owners.

Redskins | Not limiting Robert Griffin

Mon, 16 Sep 2013 14:23:57 -0700

Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said the team hasn't used much of their read zone offense this year because they have fallen behind quickly in the first half in their first two games of the season. QB Robert Griffin III isn't being limited after having offseason knee surgery. The team has run the zone read option five times in two games, with RB Alfred Morris running it each time. Griffin has nine runs on the year, scrambling six times. "If teams will give us the QB runs then we'll take it," Griffin said. "If they're not giving it to us, then we can't just run those plays." Griffin has seen that teams are taking away the zone read option by positioning their ends and safeties differently than a year ago.

Fantasy Tip: The Redskins are off to a slow start offensively, and although Griffin has looked rusty, he's been healthy. Expect him to shake off the rust, although we don't expect him to run nearly as much as a season ago. This should bode well for the team's receivers.
