Houston Astros SP Mark Appel (appendix) is being brought along slowly as he recovers from an appendectomy last month, and he's yet to face hitters in live batting practice. He's thrown off a mound a couple of times in camp. "Everything feels good," said Appel, taken with the No. 1 overall pick out of Stanford last year. "They're taking some precautions after the appendectomy. The training staff wants me to be 100 percent healthy before I start pitching live. I'm taking it slow, just playing catch day by day. I'm kind of building up again after taking a break."

Houston Astros SP Mark Appel, the No. 1 overall pick in this year's First-Year Player Draft, has been promoted to Class A Quad Cities. He joins 2012 No. 1 overall pick SS Carlos Correa.
Fantasy Tip: Appel is supposed to be on the fast track. Most fantasy owners won't need to pay much attention until he arrives at the Class AA level, but they should become familiar with the polished righty.

Houston Astros SP Mark Appel made his professional debut Friday, July 5, for Class A Tri-City, allowing two runs and three hits with one strikeout in two innings. His first pro pitch was hit over the center fielder's head for a triple, but he settled down somewhat after the uneven start. He needed just seven pitches for a perfect inning in the second before departing. He threw 19 of his 26 pitches for strikes. A scout at the stadium had Appel's velocity a little higher than the stadium gun, registering at 94-95 mph.
