Astros | Mark Appel gaining momentum at Class AAA

Mon, 03 Aug 2015 13:27:37 -0700

Houston Astros SP Mark Appel matched a career-high 10 strikeouts during his outing with Class AAA Fresno Saturday, Aug. 1. His pitching coach Ace Adams noted Appel's fastball command, and the groove he is in on the mound. "His stuff is major league. His movement is late. His changeup has a real good zoom to it at the end. He's got good arm speed. His slider is nasty. He's a major-leaguer waiting to happen."

Fantasy Tip: Appel could receive a cup of coffee with the Astros down the stretch as an extra arm out of the bullpen or spot starter. Still, he'll have to continue his recent success, as there have been plenty of peaks and valleys for the 24-year-old hurler during his path to the majors. He is worth monitoring in all formats, and owners in cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues could consider stashing Appel at any point.

Astros | Mark Appel receives promotion

Wed, 24 Jun 2015 11:41:44 -0700

Houston Astros SP Mark Appel is being promoted to Class AAA Fresno Wednesday, June 24.

Fantasy Tip: Appel, the first overall pick of the Astros in 2013, was 5-1 with a 4.26 ERA in 13 starts at Class AA Corpus Christi before the promotion, and he had fanned 49 hitters in 63 1/3 frames. He's just another in a long line of prospects for Houston, and his fastball can reach the upper-90s when he's on. Don't expect Appel to be called up this year, but he could seriously challenge for a roster spot in spring training next year.

Astros | Mark Appel starting in Class AA

Wed, 01 Apr 2015 14:40:26 -0700

Houston Astros SP Mark Appel will begin the season with Double-A Corpus Christi.

Fantasy Tip: Appel topped out last season with Corpus Christi where he posted a 3.69 ERA with 38 strikeouts through 39 innings over six starts. Look for the 2013 No. 1 selection to receive a cup of coffee in the majors this season, as long as he progresses as expected. At this point, though, he only pushes the needle in deep AL-only leagues as a stash candidate.

Astros | Mark Appel feels fine

Tue, 10 Mar 2015 11:18:50 -0700

Houston Astros SP Mark Appel (forearm) visited with a doctor Tuesday, March 10, after he experienced tightness in his right forearm warming up Monday, March 9. Appel said he is healthy and ready to pitch after playing catch Tuesday. Appel, the No. 1 overall pick in 2013, isn't expected to break camp with the team, but he could pitch in a game in the next couple days.

Fantasy Tip: Appel seems to have dodged a bullet with his forearm tightness, and he should be fine for the 2015 season in the minors. After struggling in the beginning of 2014, Appel rebounded nicely with a 3.69 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 39 innings over six starts with Double-A Corpus Christi. There's a real chance that Appel could join the Astros this year. Consider him as a stash option in deep AL-only leagues.

Astros | Mark Appel's injury not serious?

Mon, 09 Mar 2015 15:25:56 -0700

Updating a previous report, Houston Astros SP Mark Appel's (forearm) forearm injury that scratched him from the outing Monday, March 9, is not believed to be serious. Appel said he felt "a tiny bit of tightness," but said he had "literally no pain." Manager A.J. Hinch doesn't seem concerned at all, although it's unclear what the team will do next. Appel doesn't plan on undergoing an MRI exam.

Fantasy Tip: Appel, the No. 1 overall pick of the 2013 draft, certainly is a candidate to come up to the majors this summer if he pitches well in the minors. He shouldn't be drafted in standard leagues, but dynasty and keeper league owners should be well aware of Appel. AL-only managers may feel compelled to take him as a flier and stash him in deep leagues.

Astros | Mark Appel's start scratched

Mon, 09 Mar 2015 13:40:46 -0700

Houston Astros SP Mark Appel (forearm) was scratched from his spring outing Monday, March 9, due to mild tightness in his right forearm. Appel missed all of spring training last year after an appendectomy. He's likely to start the year at Class AA after he finished strong at Corpus Christi in 2014.

Fantasy Tip: Appel ranks 23rd on our list of baseball's top-30 fantasy prospects this year. His slow start last year could be attributed to his appendectomy. The former No. 1 overall pick of 2013 could be up later this year if he performs well in the minors. You can avoid him in all standard leagues, but he should already be on the radar of keeper and dynasty league owners.
