Royals | Yordano Ventura shuts down Orioles

Sun, 24 Apr 2016 15:59:37 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Yordano Ventura turned in his best start of the season on Sunday, April 24, holding the Baltimore Orioles to one run on three hits and two walks over seven innings.

Fantasy Tip: Ventura has an electric arm and is capable of outings like this more often, but control has been an issue for him so far this season. The 24-year-old worked around some early trouble in the first inning of this one and kept the Orioles in check until Kansas City broke through with a four-run seventh. Ventura is a recommended start in all formats next weekend on the road against the Seattle Mariners.

Royals | Kris Medlen named fifth starter

Sat, 26 Mar 2016 11:18:52 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Kris Medlen has won the No. 5 spot in the starting rotation, although manager Ned Yost said he may have his turn skipped the first time around. SPs Edinson Volquez, Ian Kennedy, Yordano Ventura and Chris Young are the club's first four starters.

Fantasy Tip: SPs Chien-Ming Wang, Danny Duffy and Dillon Gee were among Medlen's chief competition for the job throughout spring training camp. Medlen went 1-1 with a 6.57 ERA in four Cactus League starts but had 15 strikeouts over 12 1/3 innings. The 30-year-old right-hander can be ignored outside of AL-only and cavernous mixed leagues.

Royals | Yordano Ventura, Edinson Volquez held back

Wed, 16 Mar 2016 12:07:58 -0700

Kansas City Royals SPs Yordano Ventura (illness) and Edinson Volquez (arm) will be skipped in their next spring turns, according to manager Ned Yost. Volquez is dealing with a dead arm.

Fantasy Tip: Neither issue should affect their availability for opening day. Volquez is more attractive to fantasy owners with his electric swing-and-miss stuff. He is a No. 3 fantasy starter with upside to pitch like an ace for stretches. Volquez can help build your rotation depth, but he's a risk in the ERA and WHIP departments.

Royals | Yordano Ventura dominates Monday

Mon, 14 Mar 2016 16:34:57 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Yordano Ventura struck out six and allowed one run in four innings in a Cactus League game against the Chicago White Sox Monday, March 14. He threw 46 of his 62 pitches for strikes.

Fantasy Tip: Control issues and inconsistency have plagued Ventura, but he has electric stuff and elite swinging-strike rates. Target him as your third fantasy starter who has the upside to pitch like an ace for extended periods of time.

Marlins | Marcell Ozuna won't come cheap

Thu, 10 Dec 2015 11:09:23 -0800

The Miami Marlins are asking for a lot in return for OF Marcell Ozuna, and they've already asked for Kansas City Royals SP Yordano Ventura, Seattle Mariners SP Taijuan Walker and Cleveland Indians SP Danny Salazar.

Fantasy Tip: Ozuna would likely benefit from a change of scenery after he was demoted to the minors for struggling at the major league level early last season. Remember, he's just a year removed from a .269/.317/.455 season with 23 home runs in 153 games, so there is surely sleeper potential, especially if he lands in a better situation.

Royals | Yordano Ventura loses Game 3

Sat, 31 Oct 2015 10:21:21 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Yordano Ventura allowed five runs on seven hits over 3 1/3 innings in a loss to the New York Mets in Game 3 of the World Series Friday, Oct. 30. He walked none and struck out one.

Fantasy Tip: With the loss, Ventura fell to 0-2 with a 6.43 ERA through five starts this postseason. He remains in line to start Game 7 of the World Series Wednesday, Nov. 4 (if necessary).

Royals | KC sets World Series rotation

Mon, 26 Oct 2015 11:19:59 -0700

Kansas City Royals SPs Edinson Volquez and Johnny Cueto will start Games 1 and 2 of the World Series against the New York Mets, followed by SPs Yordano Ventura and Chris R. Young.

Fantasy Tip: The Royals have a tall task matching up with the Mets' young stud starters in the Series. Ventura is the most promising Royals starter with the most upside for 2016 fantasy owners to invest in. Cueto had a rough go of it upon being traded to KC midseason, but we would expect him to continue his fantasy ace-like ways next year.

Royals | Yordano Ventura to start Game 6

Wed, 21 Oct 2015 17:55:00 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Yordano Ventura will start Game 6 of the American League Championship Series against the Toronto Blue Jays Friday, Oct. 23.

Fantasy Tip: Ventura ($6,600, 13.2% of cap) is 0-1 with a 6.57 ERA through three postseason starts this year, with opposing hitters batting .308 against him. However, he hasn't allowed more than three runs in any of his outings and he is averaging more than a strikeout per inning, so he may still be worth a gamble in FantasyScore.

Royals | KC announces ALCS rotation

Thu, 15 Oct 2015 11:38:21 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Edinson Volquez will start Game 1 of the American League Championship Series against the Toronto Blue Jays, and he'll be followed by SP Yordano Ventura in Game 2 and SP Johnny Cueto in Game 3, manager Ned Yost announced Thursday, Oct. 15.

Fantasy Tip: The good news for the Royals is that the Blue Jays hit much better against left-handed pitchers this year. However, they remain the highest-scoring offensive club in baseball this year, so all of the Royals pitchers come with some element of risk, especially when pitching in hitter-friendly Rogers Centre.

Royals | Yordano Ventura leads ALDS rotation

Tue, 06 Oct 2015 13:09:49 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Yordano Ventura will start Game 1 of the American League Division Series on Thursday, Oct. 8. SP Johnny Cueto will go in Game 2, and SP Edinson Volquez will start Game 3.

Fantasy Tip: Ventura ($7,700, 15,4% of cap) went 4-1 with a 3.14 ERA in September and finished strong late, including 11 strikeouts against the Minnesota Twins on Saturday, Oct. 3. He should be a solid top starter for the Royals. Cueto ($8,400, 16.8% of cap) struggled when he was with the Cincinnati Reds in the postseason and he hasn't lit the world on fire in Kansas City.
