Mariners | Welington Castillo starting Tuesday

Tue, 26 May 2015 15:30:22 -0700

Seattle Mariners C Welington Castillo is starting behind the plate and batting seventh in the order Tuesday, May 26, against the Tampa Bay Rays. C Mike Zunino will be available off the bench.

Fantasy Tip: Castillo ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) had a hit and a run scored in each of his first two games as a member of the Mariners before going 0-for-4 Sunday, May 24. Castillo is hitting for an average of just .152 against righties, and he shouldn't be considered against Rays RHP Alex Colome.

Sat, 16 May 2015 15:29:18 -0700

Seattle Mariners C Mike Zunino is not in the starting lineup Saturday, May 16, against the Boston Red Sox. C Jesus Sucre will get the start against SP Rick Porcello.

Fantasy Tip: Sucre ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) has just one hit on the season and should not be considered on FantasyScore.

Mariners | Mike Zunino has career night

Tue, 12 May 2015 23:28:17 -0700

Seattle Mariners C Mike Zunino had three hits, including the second multi-homer game of his career, on Tuesday, May 12, as the Mariners scored an 11-4 win over the San Diego Padres.

Fantasy Tip: Zunino ($2,900, 5.8% of cap) was hitting .159 going into this game, and he was facing Ian Kennedy, one of the Padres pitchers that has been uneven this season. Zunino is still a hitter you should sit in a lot of situations, as he is struggling.

Mariners | Mike Zunino back in lineup

Sat, 02 May 2015 14:59:57 -0700

Seattle Mariners C Mike Zunino is back in the lineup Saturday, May 2, against the Houston Astros.

Fantasy Tip: Zunino ($2,600, 5.2% of cap) was given the day off Friday as Jesus Sucre filled in behind the plate. Zunino remains the Mariners No. 1 catcher, despite his struggles at the plate. Zunino is hitting just .129 but does have two home runs, but he should be avoided on FantasyScore as he continues to bat in the bottom-third of the order.

Mariners | Mike Zunino resting Friday

Fri, 01 May 2015 14:26:38 -0700

Seattle Mariners C Mike Zunino is not in the starting lineup Friday, May 1. C Jesus Sucre is catching and hitting ninth in the batting order against Houston Astros SP Samuel Deduno.

Fantasy Tip: Zunino is taking a day off while starting .129 (8-for-62) on the season. It'd be wise to bench Zunino or look for a catching replacement for him while he's struggling in standard leagues. Sucre ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) is hitless in just seven at-bats this year and makes for a weak FantasyScore catcher tonight.

Mariners | Mike Zunino won't be demoted

Fri, 01 May 2015 13:29:33 -0700

Seattle Mariners C Mike Zunino is not in danger of being demoted to the minors to work on things, in the opinion of The Tacoma News Tribune's Bob Dutton.

Fantasy Tip: Zunino ($2,600, 5.2% of cap) is off to a rough start in 2015, hitting just .129 (8-for-62) with two home runs and three RBI. Zunino isn't this bad, though, so you'll have to stay patient in deep mixed and AL-only leagues. Fortunately for daily gamers, you can avoid him until he starts to turn things around. Against Houston Astros starter Samuel Deduno Friday, Zunino will be a cheap sleeper if you're willing to roll the dice.

Mariners | Mike Zunino's new approach paying off

Mon, 23 Mar 2015 15:29:40 -0700

Seattle Mariners C Mike Zunino said before the start of spring training that he would be focused on driving the ball the opposite way, and early returns are encouraging in spring action. Zunino is hitting .345 through 11 games with three home runs and seven RBI. He set a team record in 2014 for catchers by hitting 22 homers, and he also added 20 doubles. However, his on-base percentage (.254) was the second lowest in the league among players with at least 450 plate appearances. Zunino also led the team in 2014 with 158 strikeouts, and cutting down on swings and misses has been a point of emphasis for him this spring. He also admits to being a bit fatigued last year, so he tailored his offseason workouts to increase his durability.

Fantasy Tip: Zunino is young and part of a lineup that should be significantly improved. He's a late-round target at the catching position, and if he can improve his strikeout totals and get on base more, he's a sleeper option that could really pay off.

Mariners | Mike Zunino to have healthy workload

Wed, 18 Mar 2015 11:09:07 -0700

Seattle Mariners C Mike Zunino is ticketed to catch somewhere around 140 to 145 games behind the plate in 2015, according to manager Lloyd McClendon. Zunino started 125 games last year at catcher and played in five more games as a reserve. However, only 10 catchers have started at least 140 games in the last 15 years.

Fantasy Tip: If you prefer to hold off and wait on your starting fantasy catcher, Zunino could be your guy in the later rounds of drafts. He swings and misses a lot, but he has a stable skill set with the stick and can leave the yard often. He's also hitting in a much-improved Seattle offense. Zunino could be a potential bargain at catcher.

Mariners | Jesus Sucre favorite for SEA backup C

Sun, 01 Mar 2015 15:04:38 -0800

Seattle Mariners C Jesus Sucre is the favorite to take the backup catcher role behind C Mike Zunino, according to manager Lloyd McClendon.

Fantasy Tip: Sucre could be worth a flyer very late in some fantasy leagues if he wins the second catcher job, but keep an eye on how much playing time he gets.

Mariners | In on Russell Martin

Thu, 20 Nov 2014 01:39:39 -0800

Toronto Blue Jays C Russell Martin was targeted by the Seattle Mariners before Martin signed with Toronto. It is not known what Seattle would have done with C Mike Zunino had Martin signed, but sources indicate the Mariners were not looking at any other catchers.
