Astros | Lance McCullers effective again

Wed, 22 Jun 2016 15:16:56 -0700

Houston Astros SP Lance McCullers recorded a no-decision in his start Wednesday, June 22, opposite the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The right-hander went 5 2/3 innings, yielding one run on six hits and three walks. He also struck out six.

Fantasy Tip: McCullers is really getting settled in again like he was last year, which is good to see after he missed the first month and change of 2016. Although he allowed more baserunners than fantasy owners would want to see, today's outing goes in the books as the fifth instance in eight tries this season in which he has given up two runs or less. McCullers appears to be trending up right now and is worth riding in many formats as a result.

Astros | Lance McCullers punches out 10

Thu, 26 May 2016 21:11:05 -0700

Houston Astros SP Lance McCullers allowed one run on one hit while walking six and striking out 10 over five innings in a win over the Baltimore Orioles Thursday, May 26.

Fantasy Tip: McCullers has had trouble with walks, but he also has 21 strikeouts in 15 2/3 innings in three starts since his delayed debut. He should be owned in all formats, and you this is probably your last chance to snatch him off waivers.

Astros | Lance McCullers not fully stretched out

Thu, 12 May 2016 14:44:02 -0700

Houston Astros SP Lance McCullers (shoulder) will not be on a strict pitch count for his start against the Boston Red Sox Friday, May 13, according to manager A.J. Hinch. Hinch did note McCullers is not built up enough to throw 110 pitches, though.

Fantasy Tip: It isn't out of the question to take a wait-and-see approach with McCullers in his 2016 debut, especially since he is facing a daunting opposing lineup. He is a must-own arm in all formats, though. McCullers returned a 3.22 ERA, a 1.18 WHIP and 9.2 K/9 through 22 starts as a rookie last season.

Astros | Houston to employ a six-man rotation

Wed, 11 May 2016 13:04:19 -0700

The Houston Astros will use a six-man rotation for the immediate future when SP Lance McCullers (shoulder) returns from the disabled list Friday, May 13.

"We're going to use six starters for the next 10 to 12 days, but it's a double-edged sword here where you get guys rest and almost break their routines and break their rhythm," manager A.J. Hinch said Wednesday, May 11. "Keuchel's going to pitch on regular rest quite often. McHugh's going to get an extra day this time. He might not need an extra day the next time. There's a method to what we're doing. It's not simply going to be six guys in a row, six guys in a row."

Fantasy Tip: McCullers should be owned in all fantasy formats, but it isn't out of the question to keep him benched until he proves his health with a solid outing. Chris Devenski and Doug Fister will likely fight for the fifth spot in the rotation once the starting staff is trimmed. Stay tuned for updates, but there likely won't be significant fantasy implications.

Astros | Lance McCullers back Friday

Wed, 11 May 2016 09:00:55 -0700

Houston Astros SP Lance McCullers (shoulder) will come off the disabled list Friday, May 13, to pitch against the Boston Red Sox, according to manager A.J. Hinch.

Fantasy Tip: It's not the best matchup for him to return against, but you can't deny his talent. He's worth activating in traditional leagues, but it's probably not the best DFS scenario.

Astros | Lance McCullers could start next weekend?

Sun, 08 May 2016 12:54:21 -0700

Houston Astros SP Lance McCullers (shoulder) is scheduled to play catch Sunday, May 08, and throw a bullpen session on Monday, May 9. If his arm responds well, it is "very possible" he could start against the Boston Red Sox next weekend, according to manager A.J. Hinch.

Fantasy Tip: McCullers has torn it up in two minor-league rehab starts, allowing a run on five hits and two walks while fanning 11 over eight innings. The 22-year-old, who struck out 129 in 125 2/3 innings as a rookie in 2015, should have an immediate impact on a team that has posted a 4.69 team ERA entering play Sunday. He needs to be owned in all leagues, although owners should probably see how he performs against the Red Sox before starting him.

Fri, 06 May 2016 20:56:43 -0700

Houston Astros SP Lance McCullers (shoulder) is scheduled to make a minor-league rehab start Saturday, May 7, with Class AAA Fresno.

Astros | Lance McCullers' return coming soon

Mon, 02 May 2016 17:00:46 -0700

Houston Astros SP Lance McCullers (shoulder) threw 62 pitches in 4 2/3 innings in an extended spring training start Monday, May 2, and he could rejoin the rotation within a week to 10 days. McCullers' velocity was between 92 and 97 mph, according to manager A.J. Hinch. McCullers is scheduled to start next for Class AAA Fresno Saturday, May 7. He could be activated from the disabled list after one rehab start, but the Astros will be cautious with him.

Fantasy Tip: Check one last time to see if McCullers is available in your league on the waiver wire. If he is, scoop him up and stash him right away. The young righty proved last year he could eventually be a rotation ace for Houston by putting up a 3.22 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 9.2 strikeouts per nine innings in 22 starts.

Astros | Lance McCullers to pitch Monday

Sat, 30 Apr 2016 05:41:10 -0700

Houston Astros SP Lance McCullers (shoulder) is expected to throw 60 to 75 pitches in an extended spring training game Monday, May 2.

Fantasy Tip: McCullers probably will need to make a few starts in the minor leagues before he is ready to return to the Astros. Owners should consider adding McCullers if he is available in their league because he posted solid numbers in 2015.
