Rangers | Shawn Tolleson out as closer

Wed, 18 May 2016 10:48:20 -0700

Texas Rangers RP Shawn Tolleson has been removed from the closer role Wednesday, May 18, with RP Sam Dyson most likely to take over.

Fantasy Tip: Dyson has good numbers (1.89 ERA, 1.11 WHIP), but he doesn't have the swing-and-miss stuff you'd like in a closer with 13 K's in 19 innings. Lefty Jake Diekman could also be an option with a 2.51 ERA, a 1.05 WHIP and 19 K's in 14 1/3 innings. One dark-horse candidate, which may be out of the box, is Derek Holland. He hasn't been the same pitcher after injuries derailed him for a couple of years. Yu Darvish (elbow) is close to returning, and Holland has been brutal as a starter this year. Dyson is an immediate pickup, and Diekman should be owned in AL-only formats. If Holland is dropped from the rotation, he's a sleeper in deep leagues. If you own Tolleson, bench him and hope that he turns it around quickly enough to regain his job.

Rangers | Shawn Tolleson blows save

Tue, 17 May 2016 23:42:54 -0700

Texas Rangers RP Shawn Tolleson blew his fourth save of the season Tuesday, May 17, against the Oakland Athletics. He lasted just 2/3 inning, surrendering four runs on three hits and a walk, en route to suffering his second loss.

Fantasy Tip: Uh oh, that's now three blown saves this month for Tolleson. The right-hander was facing some adversity in the beginning of April, but after settling down since then, he's come apart again and could see his status as the closer in jeopardy. Sam Dyson would probably be first in line for save opportunities should Tolleson lose his job.

Rangers | Shawn Tolleson unavailable for Sunday

Sun, 15 May 2016 13:58:19 -0700

Texas Rangers RP Shawn Tolleson is unavailable in a save situation against the Toronto Blue Jays Sunday, May 15, and manager Jeff Bannister said the team is trying to figure out what is wrong with Tolleson's changeup. Opponents have four hits, including a home run, in 11 at-bats (.364) against the changeup this year. He's only throwing his changeup in the strike zone 50% of the time. Tolleson blew the save Saturday, May 14, and in the process threw his changeup just once. RP Sam Dyson, who threw only one pitch Saturday, is likely to be used in a save situation Sunday if it arises.

Fantasy Tip: Tolleson has been on shaky ground for a bit now, and saves speculators in all leagues should've already been eyeing Dyson. In most cases, especially if you own Tolleson, picking up Dyson before today was already done. In any case, Tolleson's job is not completely lost, but Dyson has a great shot to unseat him in the ninth-inning role if Tolleson's struggles continue.

Rangers | Shawn Tolleson on rocky streak

Sat, 14 May 2016 22:22:36 -0700

Texas Rangers RP Shawn Tolleson gave up home runs to Toronto Blue Jays 1B Justin Smoak and SS Troy Tulowitzki in the ninth inning Saturday, May 14. Tolleson has a 7.07 earned run average and has blown two of his last four save chances.

Fantasy Tip: Tolleson leads the American League with 11 saves, but closing is often a case of what have you done for me lately. If Tolleson is showing signs of a meltdown, the team may elect to take him out for the time being and let him work things out. Tolleson may have earned a longer leash for the moment, but if you have Tolleson in a fantasy league you may want to consider picking up Tom Wilhelmsen. Wilhelmsen also has prior closing experiece.

Rangers | Shawn Tolleson closes it out

Thu, 14 Apr 2016 20:11:43 -0700

Texas Rangers RP Shawn Tolleson converted his second straight save opportunity, allowing one hit in a scoreless ninth inning against the Baltimore Orioles Thursday, April 14.

Fantasy Tip: Tolleson has righted the ship after a disastrous start. He still doesn't have a long leash as the closer, but he needs to owned in all formats for now.

Rangers | Shawn Tolleson serves up winner

Fri, 08 Apr 2016 08:45:01 -0700

Texas Rangers RP Shawn Tolleson gave up the game-winning hit Thursday, April 7, against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. He came into the contest with the score tied 3-3 with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, only to yield an RBI single off the bat of 1B Albert Pujols.

Fantasy Tip: While he didn't get credit for the loss, this is still another brutal blow to Tolleson's status as closer. It's also just one game after he blew a save and got rocked by the Mariners. Fortunately for the right-hander, he was so tremendous last year for the team that he probably has a longer leash than most. Even still, if he continues to struggle for a lengthy period, Keone Kela or Sam Dyson could get a turn in the role.

Rangers | Shawn Tolleson gets smoked by M's

Wed, 06 Apr 2016 15:21:49 -0700

Texas Rangers RP Shawn Tolleson blew his first save of the season Wednesday, April 6, versus the Seattle Mariners. He surrendered five runs on five hits, including a home run, without recording a single out.

Fantasy Tip: Yikes. Tolleson looked just fine on opening day, when he was able to convert on his first save opportunity in a clean ninth inning, but just completely came apart in this one. Even so, there should be no concern about his job status after last year's terrific breakout campaign. At the same time, you have to wonder if this type of performance will mess with his confidence in the upcoming games.

Rangers | Shawn Tolleson set to pitch Saturday

Fri, 11 Mar 2016 12:11:06 -0800

Texas Rangers RP Shawn Tolleson (back) is scheduled to pitch one inning in a B game Saturday, March 12. He has been dealing with lower back stiffness.

Fantasy Tip: Tolleson is a midrange closer to target after the top options fly of the board on draft day. Barring any further setbacks, he should be ready for opening day. Tolleson posted a 2.99 ERA over 73 appearances last season with 35 saves and 76 strikeouts through 72 1/3 innings.

Rangers | Shawn Tolleson throws Thursday

Thu, 10 Mar 2016 18:33:07 -0800

Texas Rangers RP Shawn Tolleson (back) threw approximately 30 pitches during a bullpen session Thursday, March 10, and said he felt "really good" afterward.

Fantasy Tip: Tolleson has yet to pitch in a Cactus League game this spring due to soreness in his lower back but he should be ready for the start of the regular season barring any setbacks. He makes a decent ninth-inning option in seasonal fantasy leagues once the top-tier closers have come off the draft board.

Rangers | Shawn Tolleson rehab update

Wed, 09 Mar 2016 17:04:07 -0800

Texas Rangers RP Shawn Tolleson (back) is expected to resume throwing from a mound if he can successfully complete one more flat-ground throwing session. Tolleson has been bothered by lower back spasms and hasn't appeared in any exhibition games this year.

Fantasy Tip: Barring any significant setbacks, Tolleson should be good to go for opening day and should be targeted in drafts after the big-name closers come off the board. He went 6-4 with a 2.99 ERA in 73 appearances in 2015, with 35 saves and 76 strikeouts in 72 1/3 innings.
