Rangers | A.J. Griffin pitches solid game

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 00:17:18 -0700

Texas Rangers SP A.J. Griffin threw eight innings of solid baseball Tuesday, April 26, in a 10-1 win over the New York Yankees.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin improved to 3-0 with the win and shut down a Yankees lineup that had been pretty potent most of the season. Griffin missed most of the past two years due to Tommy John surgery, and a game like this makes Griffin look solid in fantasy circles.

Rangers | A.J. Griffin keeps up fine pitching

Wed, 13 Apr 2016 15:53:45 -0700

Texas Rangers SP A.J. Griffin picked up a no-decision Wednesday, April 13, against the Seattle Mariners. He registered five innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and four walks. He also struck out five.

Fantasy Tip: If Griffin didn't top 100 pitches through his five innings of work, he would've had a shot at completing his second straight quality start in his return to the big leagues. In any event, the former Athletic has surprisingly been pretty good for his new club, compiling a 3.27 ERA in his first couple of assignments. It's hard to own a bottom-rotation pitcher from the Rangers, but Griffin will be worth a spot in deep leagues if he seemingly continues to approach his 2013 form when he won 14 ballgames.

Rangers | A.J. Griffin starting Friday

Thu, 07 Apr 2016 12:30:51 -0700

Texas Rangers SP A.J. Griffin is listed as the starter against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Friday, April 8.

Fantasy Tip: The Angels scored just one run in their first two games of the season, and their lineup lacks depth behind Mike Trout, Albert Pujols and Kole Calhoun. However, Griffin is very mediocre, at best, and must prove he can stay healthy and be effective before fantasy owners take a chance on him.

Rangers | A.J. Griffin wins final rotation spot?

Mon, 28 Mar 2016 13:51:01 -0700

Texas Rangers SP A.J. Griffin appears to have won the battle for the fifth starting spot over SP Nick Martinez.

Fantasy Tip: It isn't technically official just yet, so don't get your hopes up. Tommy John surgery and shoulder tendonitis wiped out Griffin's last two years, so even though he's on the verge of winning a job, he should really only be scooped up in AL leagues by the desperate.

Rangers | A.J. Griffin so-so in spring loss

Mon, 14 Mar 2016 22:41:05 -0700

Texas Rangers SP A.J. Griffin allowed two earned runs, four hits and a walk with no strikeouts over 2 2/3 innings in a Cactus League spring outing against the Cleveland Indians Monday, March 14.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin is in the running for the fifth starter job in Arlington, but he has a 4.76 ERA to date in the spring. Even if he wins a job he is only worth a look in the deepest of AL-only fantasy leagues for depth at the pitching spot.

Rangers | No. 5 job in Texas up for grabs

Mon, 22 Feb 2016 22:37:24 -0800

Texas Rangers SPs Jeremy Guthrie and Nick Tepesch are among the candidates for the fifth spot in the rotation this spring along with SPs Chi Chi Gonzalez, A.J. Griffin, Nick Martinez, Cesar Ramos and Anthony Ranaudo.

Fantasy Tip: The winner of the No. 5 rotation spot will be worth a look in deeper AL-only fantasy leagues, while the losers are headed to the bullpen or minors and should be avoided for now.

Rangers | A.J. Griffin works on mechanics

Mon, 22 Feb 2016 22:33:13 -0800

Texas Rangers SP A.J. Griffin (elbow) has been throwing on flat ground to work on his mechanics with pitching coach Doug Brocail.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin is 21-11 with a 3.60 ERA in 47 career starts with a 1.13 WHIP, but he is working his way back from elbow problems over the past two seasons. He is in the running with several others for the No. 5 rotation spot. If he secures a spot in the Texas rotation he could be a decent AL-only fantasy option with some appeal in deeper mixed formats, too.

Athletics | A.J. Griffin not throwing

Tue, 04 Aug 2015 16:25:34 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP A.J. Griffin (shoulder, elbow) remains on the disabled list in the minor leagues and hasn't thrown since being shut down in the middle of his rehab assignment.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin has been trying to return from Tommy John surgery, and he was getting close to a return before his shoulder acted up. At this point in the season, it's a long shot that he'll pitch in the major leagues. However, if he starts throwing in minor league games again this year, he could be ready to go and be in the starting rotation out of spring training in 2016.

Athletics | A.J. Griffin to rehab Friday

Tue, 09 Jun 2015 16:11:06 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP A.J. Griffin (shoulder, elbow) said he will make another rehab start for Class AAA Nashville Friday, June 12.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin is nearing a return from Tommy John surgery, and he's a year removed from the procedure, which should put fantasy owners' minds at ease that he can significantly help their pitching staff in the second half of the season. Check to see if Griffin is available in your league. He should immediately enter the A's rotation when he's ready.

Athletics | A.J. Griffin makes rehab start

Wed, 03 Jun 2015 15:56:55 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP A.J. Griffin (shoulder, elbow) gave up a hit and struck out three in three innings for Class A Stockton Tuesday, June 2, in his first rehab start. Manager Bob Melvin said Griffin felt great, and he'll need to make multiple rehab starts to get stretched out to 100 pitches before he's activated. Griffin could return late this month or in early July.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin is expected to jump right back into the starting rotation when he's healthy, and he's worth stashing in all formats. The young right-hander posted an ERA of 3.60 in 47 starts in 2012 and 2013.
