Browns | Josh Gordon not practicing

Thu, 31 Jul 2014 07:37:14 -0700

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon is not practicing Thursday, July 31, and presumably will miss practice Friday, Aug. 1, to attend his suspension appeal hearing.

Fantasy Tip: Tomorrow's hearing will likely heavily impact the fantasy landscape as Gordon was a surefire WR1 before his suspension.

Browns | Josh Gordon's suspension all or nothing

Wed, 30 Jul 2014 20:40:54 -0700

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon is in Stage III of the NFL's substance-abuse program, and a positive test automatically triggers a one-year suspension. For Gordon, only two options exist: full-year suspension or no suspension at all.

Fantasy Tip: Gordon's fantasy value will be known shortly once his appeal is heard. The outcry for Ray Rice's suspension of two games might factor in here. However, it is Gordon's third run-in in just a couple of seasons, and as a repeat offender he could be treated more harshly.

Browns | Appeal argument may not help Josh Gordon

Wed, 30 Jul 2014 10:24:48 -0700

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon is expected to argue during his appeal hearing that second-hand smoke caused his positive test, but NFL spokesperson Greg Aiello indicated that argument may not change decision. "A cornerstone of both of our drug testing programs has always been that you are responsible for what is in your body," Aiello said. "It is stated that way in the policies." No player has won their appeal with the second-hand smoke argument.

Browns | Josh Gordon victim of circumstance?

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 12:11:01 -0700

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon has passed at least 70 drug tests as a member of the Stage III drug program, and the positive test that is being reviewed for a one-year suspension was not far off from being ruled as a negative. Of the two urine samples taken from Gordon for that test, his "A" sample registered barely above the league's limit. The "B" sample came in at a level below the threshold.

A positive "A" leads to a test for the substance's presence in "B." But the "B" sample doesn't have to show a level befitting a violation; it only has to confirm a hint of the same substance as "A." If Gordon's "B" sample had been labeled as the "A" and vice versa, the sample that barely registered as a positive wouldn't have been examined.

Fantasy Tip: There's an increasing feeling that if this is valid, Gordon could be shown leniency, especially in light of the NFL's recent PR nightmare with the Ray Rice suspension ruling. He's not out of the woods yet, but there's reason to think he'll play some regulation football this year.

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 15:40:42 -0700

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon (hamstring) will practice when training camp starts, according to head coach Mike Pettine, despite his impending suspension.

Fantasy Tip: This is no reason to get your hopes up with Gordon despite the news of him practicing. His year-long suspension is all but guaranteed at this point, it's just not official yet.

Browns | Josh Gordon won't be cut

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 08:52:04 -0700

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon won't be cut despite his looming suspension hearing and appeal, according to head coach Mike Pettine.

Fantasy Tip: They're willing to stick out whatever the discipline winds up being, at least for now. This could change as an actual suspension is handed down and enforced, so keep tabs. It doesn't look as if Gordon will be anything more than a middle- and late-rounds flyer for fantasy purposes.

Browns | Josh Gordon hearing soon?

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 08:11:09 -0700

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon's hearing on a possible suspension is expected to take place in the next 10 days, possibly two weeks, according to head coach Mike Pettine. They're also preparing for an appeal not long after.

Fantasy Tip: The waiting game continues. Hopefully, your draft doesn't take place until closer to the start of Week 1 so you'll have a sound idea of whether he's still worth a bench selection.

Browns | Agent: Trying to help Josh Gordon

Fri, 18 Jul 2014 09:12:19 -0700

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said he plans to meet with the team next week to discuss how they can help Gordon as he waits on his looming drug suspension. If Gordon loses his appeal, he's likely to be suspended by the NFL for the entire 2014 season, and he'd only be eligible for reinstatement after the season is up. The Browns have reached out to several professionals to try and get Gordon some help for his substance-abuse problems.

Fantasy Tip: Unfortunately for the Browns and Gordon, his on-field talents are secondary right now to his off-field concerns. He's become an even bigger draft risk after his latest off-field problems, and it's probably smart to avoid him entirely.

Browns | Teammate does not think Josh Gordon should be cut

Fri, 11 Jul 2014 18:10:07 -0700

Cleveland Browns SS Donte Whitner said the team should not release WR Josh Gordon, because the players and coaches need to help him out with off-field issues. "We have to help him collectively. It's not going be one person that helps him, it's not going to be two people that help him. It's gonna come from the front office, the coaching staff, the players and his whole family. We have to help him - not only for football purposes, but for life purposes to get his life in order," Whitner said. Whitner said he is one of several teammates that have reached out to Gordon, who is very remorseful for what has happened.

Mon, 07 Jul 2014 11:40:09 -0700

Cleveland Browns general manager Ray Farmer said in a statement that the team is disappointed with WR Josh Gordon's arrest, but the organization has stronger feelings about the situation.

Fantasy Tip: Gordon's season and possibly career could be in jeopardy because of his numerous off-field issues. Most owners probably can avoid him because of his possible suspension and off-field issues, but owners in very deep leagues could consider using a late-round flier on him in case he plays at some point in 2014.

"I feel for the kid," Carter said. "My situation was very, very similar. If I'm the Cleveland Browns - and it's gut-wrenching for me to say this - I really think that the only thing that's going to help the kid is if they release him." Carter was released by the Philadelphia Eagles when he was dealing with substance-abuse issues.

Browns | Former teammate: Josh Gordon needs help

Mon, 07 Jul 2014 09:56:00 -0700

Indianapolis Colts LB D'Qwell Jackson, a former teammate of Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon, said on his Twitter account that Gordon is in need of help to pick up the pieces of his life. "He needs help, he really does," Jackson told ESPN.com. "He needs people to extend themselves and probably have to do more than they wanted to do. But if (the Browns) care anything about the kid, they have to do it." Two other people close to Gordon have said he has had substance-abuse issues since high school and have urged him to seek professional help. A league source believes the Browns are partly to blame because they haven't set Gordon up with a support system.

Fantasy Tip: One has to wonder at this point if Gordon's bright playing future is in serious jeopardy. He's already facing a year-long suspension, and his latest trouble won't help him avoid sitting out an entire season. He's an extremely risky selection, even as your WR4 or 5.

Browns | Josh Gordon arrested

Sat, 05 Jul 2014 12:01:10 -0700

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon was arrested Saturday, July 5, for driving while intoxicated, according to police in Raleigh, N.C.

Fantasy Tip: It's impossible to envision a situation where Gordon suits up for the Browns this year and this could put his NFL career in jeopardy. He was already facing a possible season-long suspension for marijuana use, so any chance he might have had for a reduced suspension has vanished.

Thu, 03 Jul 2014 14:05:02 -0700

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon's appeal of his suspension is scheduled to be heard at some point in late July, according to a source. There is a chance the NFL and NFL Players Association could negotiate a reduced sentence for Gordon.

Fantasy Tip: It appears Gordon will be suspended for some length of time, but owners will not know until it is announced. He should be considered a big risk at this point but could be seen as a No. 4 or 5 fantasy receiver if he plays some games this season.

Wed, 25 Jun 2014 19:08:29 -0700

The NFL has not scheduled an appeal hearing for Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon about his potential suspension for testing position for marijuana again, according to a source.

Browns | Josh Gordon lacking hustle

Wed, 11 Jun 2014 12:52:45 -0700

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon, who is awaiting word from the league on a possible season-long suspension, has lacked hustle in offseason workouts at times, according to head coach Mike Pettine. SI.com's Greg Bedard made a similar accusation about Gordon when he visited the team's training camp last summer.

Fantasy Tip: Pettine clarified his remarks Wednesday, saying the lack of hustle statement was a bit overblown by the media. Regardless, the lack of hustle is now associated with Gordon, and combined with his off-the-field issues, gives fantasy players real concern over him. Gordon is a huge risk, until we know more about his suspension.

Browns | Josh Gordon receives speeding ticket

Fri, 30 May 2014 16:07:53 -0700

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon received a speeding ticket this past weekend for driving 74 mph in a 60 mph zone. He is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday, June 4, to dispute the citation. The passenger in the car also received a citation for possession of marijuana.

Fantasy Tip: One has to think this could be the final nail in the coffin for any hope of Roger Goodell taking it easy on Gordon this year. It is fair to assume the potential for a reduced sentence is all but gone at this point.

Browns | Josh Gordon not in long-term plans?

Thu, 22 May 2014 09:26:44 -0700

Cleveland Browns general manager Ray Farmer said he doesn't think a superstar receiver is crucial to a team's success, which might foreshadow that the team doesn't have WR Josh Gordon in their long-term plans. Gordon is facing a year-long suspension for failing a marijuana test. Farmer also said that he'd be willing to trade for a receiver. Farmer said he hasn't reached out to the Houston Texans regarding WR Andre Johnson.

Fantasy Tip: The statement from Farmer doesn't bode well for Gordon, who we expect to be suspended for at least the majority of the 2014 season. He's a big risk as a fantasy football selection until we have a better picture of the scope of his suspension.

Mon, 19 May 2014 10:20:58 -0700

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon will be on the practice field with the team this week, and head coach Mike Pettine said it's his "expectation" that Gordon will take part in organized team activities. Gordon is facing a one-year suspension from the league for a positive drug test in the offseason.

Fantasy Tip: Gordon's year-long suspension isn't official. However, he's a giant risk in drafts up until we know. Taking him as your WR4 or 5 as things currently stand seems worth the risk.

Browns | Not looking to cut ties with Josh Gordon

Tue, 13 May 2014 15:03:34 -0700

Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam said the team isn't looking to cut ties with WR Josh Gordon despite his pending year-long suspension for testing positive for a banned substance. "He's learning how to work hard. He's learning how to be a professional. Josh is a smart young man. All of us have made mistakes when we were that age. We're counting on Josh being a good football player for the Browns for a long time to come," Haslam said. Gordon's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, plans to appeal the league's ruling and try to have the suspension reduced.

Fantasy Tip: Gordon will drop significantly in early fantasy football drafts, and he's a big risk. However, because a season-long suspension isn't guaranteed yet, he's not a bad gamble as your WR5 or 6.

Browns | Josh Gordon facing year ban

Fri, 09 May 2014 15:45:22 -0700

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon is facing a year-long suspension after another failed drug test months ago for marijuana, according to sources. "That's something you're going to have to talk to (agent) Drew Rosenhaus about. I really don't know anything about it," Gordon said. Rosenhaus didn't comment, other to say the report was "not true." Gordon had drug-testing problems in college, as well, and was dismissed from Baylor after being suspended for marijuana use twice.

Fantasy Tip: Gordon has the right to appeal if this report is true. Gordon developed into an elite wideout last season after serving a two-game suspension, so this would be a huge blow to the Browns offense. Greg Little would effectively become their No. 1 receiver, with Nate Burleson and others filling in behind him. Expect Cleveland to address the position in the draft, as well.
