Phillies | Ryan Howard sitting vs. Nationals

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 14:02:44 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, April 27. 1B Darin Ruf is starting at first base and batting fourth against Washington Nationals SP Gio Gonzalez Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Dating back to the beginning of last season, Ruf has a .369/.438/.650 slash line against left-handed pitchers. He is a viable flier in daily contests Wednesday, and his success against lefties is why he has earned a platoon at first base. Howard projects to continue to sit out against southpaws, which limits his overall upside.

Phillies | Darin Ruf to play throughout weekend

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 15:13:47 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Darin Ruf is expected to play in all three games this weekend against Milwaukee Brewers' right-handed pitchers while OF Peter Bourjos tinkers with his swing.

Fantasy Tip: Ruf will face Zach Davies Friday night, then Chase Anderson and Wily Peralta to finish off the three-game series. Those three arms aren't exactly lighting the world on fire, so as long as Ruf starts in all three contests, he has some intriguing sleeper potential in daily formats.

Phillies | Peter Bourjos sitting out

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 13:31:23 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies OF Peter Bourjos is not in the starting lineup Friday, April 22. OF Darin Ruf is starting in left field and hitting seventh against Milwaukee Brewers SP Zach Davies, while OF David Lough shifts over to right field.

Fantasy Tip: Ruf has dealt with a nagging injury this year and only has 18 at-bats (two hits) this year. Davies isn't an overpowering pitcher, and Ruf could do damage, but he's a risky deep sleeper in daily formats tonight.

Phillies | Three regulars out for Phillies

Sun, 17 Apr 2016 10:14:45 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard, C Cameron Rupp and OF Cedric Hunter are not in the starting lineup against Washington Nationals SP Gio Gonzalez Sunday, April 17. 1B Darin Ruf will start at first base and is batting fifth in the lineup. C Carlos Ruiz will start at catcher and is batting sixth, while OF Tyler Goeddel will start in left field and is batting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Ruf, Ruiz and Goeddel are all hitting under .200 over the first few weeks of the season and are not strong candidates for fantasy owners.

Phillies | Ryan Howard resting Sunday

Sun, 17 Apr 2016 08:07:49 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard is not in the starting lineup against Washington Nationals SP Gio Gonzalez Sunday, April 17. 1B/OF Darin Ruf is starting at first base, batting fifth.

Fantasy Tip: Howard has four home runs and seven RBI through 36 at-bats but is hitting just .194 on the season. Ruf has done historically well versus lefties and is worth considering as a value play in daily fantasy leagues this afternoon.

Phillies | Darin Ruf out of the lineup

Tue, 12 Apr 2016 23:48:45 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Darin Ruf (shoulder) was not in the lineup Tuesday, April 12, against the San Diego Padres after suffering a left shoulder injury diving for a ball in the game Monday, April 11.

Fantasy Tip: Avoid Ruf in NL-only fantasy leagues and DFS play until he can officially return and prove his health in a full game without any setbacks.

Phillies | Darin Ruf could start in left field

Fri, 08 Apr 2016 13:45:24 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Darin Ruf was told to begin practicing in left field by manager Pete MacKanin to help kick-start the offense. Ruf did not play or take any outfield repetitions during spring training.

Fantasy Tip: Ruf destroyed left-handed hurlers last season with eight home runs, a 1.107 OPS and a .466 wOBA through 114 plate appearances. And while he is still nothing more than a low-end own in deep mixed leagues, owners in daily transaction formats and DFS players can roll him out with more confidence when he faces a southpaw.

Phillies | Ryan Howard accepts platoon role

Wed, 06 Apr 2016 15:35:49 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard wasn't happy about it, but he has accepted a platoon role at first base with 1B Darin Ruf. Howard started 10 of 38 games when the Phillies faced a lefty last year, and Ruf had a 1.107 OPS in 114 plate appearances last year against lefties, which was tied for the best mark in baseball.

Fantasy Tip: Howard was already a declining player for fantasy owners, and this just solidifies it and keeps him relegated to NL-only leagues. Ruf can be a solid source of power in those same formats and as a cheap flier in daily contests, depending on the matchup he faces when he starts.

Phillies | Ryan Howard out vs. lefty

Wed, 06 Apr 2016 11:23:30 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard is on the bench against Cincinnati Reds left-handed SP Brandon Finnegan Wednesday, April 6, with 1B Darin Ruf in his spot at first base and hitting fifth. Also, SS Freddy Galvis moves up to the two hole Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Don't act shocked. This is expected to be a regular occurrence this year with Howard sitting against left-handers. Ruf hit .371 with eight of his 12 homers against lefties in 2015 in 97 at-bats, so he's worth a look in daily games today.

Phillies | Darin Ruf outplaying Ryan Howard

Tue, 29 Mar 2016 14:51:20 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Darin Ruf has been outplaying 1B Ryan Howard throughout spring training, so much so that manager Pete Mackanin is considering ditching a platoon that would consist of the two in favor of getting Ruf more playing time. Ruf is 16-for-53 (.302) in 22 games this spring with four home runs, as well as eight walks compared to just 10 strikeouts, while Howard is 10-for-48 (.208) with 18 strikeouts in 16 games.

Fantasy Tip: Who didn't see this one coming? Howard has been a black hole in the lineup for years now but because of his massive contract, the Phillies are stuck with him through the duration of it. Ruf, however, has been a bright spot for the club, and is displaying the tools that could make him Philadelphia's first baseman of the future. If he manages to overcome this platoon situation and garner at-bats on an everyday basis, he could definitely have value as a cheap source for power.
