Phillies | Darin Ruf strains oblique

Thu, 20 Mar 2014 11:29:33 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies OF Darin Ruf (oblique) suffered a strained left oblique during batting practice Thursday, March 20, and was scratched from the lineup. Ruf is hitting .217 with two home runs in 18 spring games.

Fantasy Tip: Ruf has a ton of power and can punish left-handed pitchers, but he has holes in his swing and is likely pegged for platoon duties in the outfield. He's an NL-only player to round out your outfield depth.

Phillies | John Mayberry no lock for roster

Sat, 08 Feb 2014 19:44:39 -0800

Philadelphia Phillies OF John Mayberry Jr. is not a lock for the roster, and the team can release him with 16 days left in spring training and pay him just one-sixth ($265,000) of his $1.59 million salary. Mayberry's biggest competition for a roster spot appears to be 1B/OF Darin Ruf.

Phillies | Darin Ruf could have bigger role

Sat, 08 Feb 2014 19:43:29 -0800

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Darin Ruf faces doubters on where he fits on the 25-man roster, but beat writer Matt Gelb feels that unless Ruf has a disastrous spring he will make the roster. "I like him at first base depending on how things go. If we need a right-handed bat against left-handed pitching, we have the lineup for that. That could be Ruf in left field. He could be at first base," manager Ryne Sandberg said. Ruf's ability to get on base will also help his chances, as the team drew fewer walks than any Phillies team in the past 50 years. However, Ruf drew a walk in 11.3 percent of his plate appearances. The next closest position player was SS Jimmy Rollins at 8.9 percent.

Phillies | Darin Ruf may not make team

Tue, 04 Feb 2014 00:32:34 -0800

Philadelphia Phillies OF Darin Ruf may be in danger of not making the team unless the club plans to use OF Marlon Byrd as a backup in center field. MLB.com writer Todd Zolecki speculates Ruf may be out of luck if the club chooses to carry 13 pitchers on the 25-man roster.

Phillies | Darin Ruf to get bulk of playing time at first base

Sun, 01 Sep 2013 11:13:07 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B/OF Darin Ruf will get the bulk of the playing time at first base while 1B Ryan Howard (knee) remains sidelined, as a result of the team trading INF Michael Young to the Los Angeles Dodgers. INF Kevin Frandsen and 1B/OF John Mayberry Jr. are also capable of playing the position. Minor league 3B Maikel Franco, who has recently started playing first base, remains a long-shot to be called up this season.

Phillies | Ryan Howard may not return

Mon, 12 Aug 2013 15:26:49 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard (knee) hasn't started swinging a bat, and the club is uncertain if he will play again this season. "I have no idea when or if he is going to be back this year," general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said. "If he's 100 percent and doing baseball activities, it's possible. But there's no reason to rush him back." Howard has lost "15 to 20 pounds," too.

Fantasy Tip: Darin Ruf's playing time for the rest of the season appears to be safe. He can also play in the outfield now that Delmon Young is no longer on the roster.

Phillies | Delmon Young cut

Fri, 09 Aug 2013 13:01:36 -0700

The Philadelphia Phillies designated OF Delmon Young for assignment Friday, Aug. 9. Young had a slash line of .261/.302/.397 this year.

Fantasy Tip: Darin Ruf will get playing time at first base until Ryan Howard (knee) returns, but he'll find a spot in the outfield after that. John Mayberry Jr. and Casper Wells will both have short-term value in outfield spots as part-time players the rest of the way, too.
