Reds | Tony Cingrani blows another save

Fri, 20 May 2016 20:40:57 -0700

Cincinnati Reds RP Tony Cingrani blew his fourth save of the season and third in his last five appearances Friday, May 20, against the Seattle Mariners.

Fantasy Tip: Cingrani is becoming the latest Cincinnati reliever to blow his chance at being the primary closer. The Reds' bullpen as a whole has been an absolute disaster, and you are grasping at straws trying to figure out who will earn the next save.

Reds | Tony Cingrani blows a save

Wed, 18 May 2016 20:01:21 -0700

Cincinnati Reds RP Tony Cingrani blew the save against the Cleveland Indians Wednesday, May 18, by allowing a two-run home run to Indians OF Rajai Davis in the ninth inning. Cincy's bullpen has allowed 33 home runs and blown nine of their 13 save chances this year. Cingrani's ERA was raised to 3.86 on the season.

Fantasy Tip: The Reds bullpen has been historically bad this season. Both J.J. Hoover (demoted to minors) and Caleb Cotham didn't fare well in the ninth inning, and Cingrani, despite three saves, hasn't been very sharp, either. Cingrani continues to be the best bet for save chasers, but the recently promoted Jumbo Diaz has a better arsenal for the role and is a speculative addition in deeper leagues if you're desperate.

Reds | Tony Cingrani earns another save

Sun, 15 May 2016 15:59:23 -0700

Cincinnati Reds RP Tony Cingrani came on with a five-run lead in the ninth inning, but retired both of the hitters he faced with the bases loaded to post his third save of the season against the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday, May 15.

Fantasy Tip: The Reds' bullpen has been a mess for most of the season, although Cingrani may be emerging as the reliever to own in Cincinnati since he has recorded the team's last three saves. The 26-year-old southpaw issued eight free passes in 9 2/3 innings while going 0-2 in April but has mostly dependable with only two earned runs and two walks allowed across 7 1/3 frames in May. He's worth a shot for owners desperately seeking saves.

Reds | Tony Cingrani logs the save

Fri, 06 May 2016 19:23:23 -0700

Cincinnati Reds RP Tony Cingrani recorded the final five outs of a 5-1 win over the Milwaukee Brewers Friday, May 6, to earn his first save of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Cincinnati's bullpen has been a mess, but Cingrani has been one of the better options. He is worth a speculative add in deeper mixed and NL-only formats if you are hunting for saves.

Reds | Cincinnati going with closer committee

Wed, 20 Apr 2016 13:02:01 -0700

Updating a previous report, Cincinnati Reds RPs Tony Cingrani, J.J. Hoover and Caleb Cotham will be employed in a closer-by-committee approach moving forward, according to manager Bryan Price.

Fantasy Tip: Cingrani likely has the most fantasy appeal at this point because of his strikeout upside. The converted starter owns a career 11.4 K/9 through 52 appearances as a reliever. Cothmam and Hoover should also be owned in the majority of leagues, and especially if you're chasing saves.

Reds | Tony Cingrani will stick in bullpen role

Mon, 07 Dec 2015 15:34:09 -0800

Cincinnati Reds RP Tony Cingrani is viewed as a reliever by manager Bryan Price.

Fantasy Tip: Cingrani owns a 4.93 ERA, 5.07 FIP, a 1.58 WHIP and a 9.3 K/9 through 96 2/3 innings over the past two years, which includes 12 starts. Interestingly, Cingrani has actually fared better as a starter, too. All said, though, he is nothing more than a desperation flier in cavernous mixed and NL-only formats heading into the 2016 season.

Reds | Tony Cingrani struggles in start

Wed, 22 Jul 2015 19:05:10 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Tony Cingrani allowed five runs on six hits over 2 2/3 innings in a no-decision against the Chicago Cubs Wednesday, July 22, with two walks and three strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: It was Cingrani's ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) first start since coming off the disabled list with a strained left shoulder, so the struggles he experienced weren't surprising. Avoid using him in FantasyScore until he demonstrates that he can consistently get outs.

Reds | Tony Cingrani pegged for Game 2 Wednesday

Mon, 20 Jul 2015 14:45:18 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Tony Cingrani (shoulder) will start the second game of the doubleheader against the Chicago Cubs Wednesday, July 22.

Fantasy Tip: Not only will it be Cingrani's ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) first start at the major league level this season, he is also working his way back from injury. FantasyScore players should likely pass on taking a leap of faith with the hard-throwing lefty. Seasonal owners in deep NL-only and cavernous mixed leagues should grab him now, though. There could be an opening in the rotation after the trade deadline.

Reds | Tony Cingrani could enter rotation

Fri, 17 Jul 2015 14:11:21 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Tony Cingrani (shoulder) will make another rehab start for Class AAA Louisville Friday, July 17, but his next start after that could be with the Reds. Manager Bryan Price said they will stretch Cingrani out more as a starter. The Reds have a doubleheader against the Chicago Cubs Wednesday, July 22, and Cingrani could help fill in. Cingrani has thrown nine shutout innings while allowing two hits, five walks and striking out 12 in his three rehab outings so far. Cincinnati may need depth in their rotation if they trade away SPs Johnny Cueto and/or Mike Leake.

Fantasy Tip: Keep an eye on this development and those in NL-only leagues and deeper mixed leagues might want to speculate and pick up Cingrani now. He had a 3.47 ERA and struck out 10.0 hitters per nine innings in 24 outings as a reliever this year. He won't have that high of a strikeout rate if he returns to the rotation, but an addition of some offspeed pitches could help him be effective for fantasy owners in the second half if he sticks in a rotation spot.

Reds | Robert Stephenson, Tony Cingrani options

Thu, 09 Jul 2015 16:20:35 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SPs Robert Stephenson and Tony Cingrani could be recalled to enter the starting rotation if the team trades SPs Johnny Cueto or Mike Leake, or both, at the trading deadline. Stephenson is 2-0 with a 1.64 ERA for Class AAA Louisville this year, and Cingrani is being stretched out as a starter after rehabbing from a shoulder strain. The Reds won't necessarily use Cingrani as a starter when he's healthy, but they want to have options. Cingrani was too reliant on his fastball out of spring training, and since he's worked on adding offspeed pitches. Cingrani or SP Raisel Iglesias (oblique) are likely the first two options to take a rotation spot if needed. Stephenson has the best stuff in the organization as a starter, though.

Fantasy Tip: Stephenson is MLB.com's 18th overall ranked prospect this year, and now is the time to stash him away in keeper and deep NL-only leagues if he's available. Iglesias ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) and Cingrani are likely widely available in the majority of formats, and both could be valuable to those in the deepest of mixed leagues if they grab a rotation spot in the second half.
