Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle continues to try and figure out the team's left field and first base positions this spring. 2B Michael Martinez, who is a switch hitter and can play second base and the outfield, is the only one who has distinguished himself in the game Monday, March 11. OFs Andrew Lambo, Jaff Decker, Chris Dickerson, Chris McGuiness and Travis Snider and 1B Travis Ishikawa are all in the mix. "We'll just keep giving them opportunities to play. We'll keep giving them at-bats and see where they take them," said Hurdle, who has begun to divide what he refers to as "separation" among the candidates. "But I'm not gonna seed them for you."

The Pittsburgh Pirates have 1Bs Andrew Lambo, Chris McGuiness and Gaby Sanchez vying for at-bats at first base, and a platoon situation might work there. However, general manager Neal Huntington is likely to continue seeking an upgrade, according to beat writer Rob Biertempfel.

Texas Rangers INF Jeff Baker (thumb) suffered a sprained right thumb after an "over-the-top high-five" by one of his teammates Thursday, June 13. He's unable to grip a bat and is out of the lineup Friday, June 14.
Fantasy Tip: He may have to miss more time, as well. This might open up more time for Chris McGuinness to continue contributing at 1B until Mitch Moreland (hamstring) comes back from the DL.

Texas Rangers 1B Mitch Moreland (hamstring) is expected to run the bases this weekend and could begin a rehab assignment by Monday, June 17. The plan is to have him come off the disabled list for the team's road trip at the St. Louis Cardinals and New York Yankees.
Fantasy Tip: That would put Moreland in line to be activated as early as Friday, June 21. Sounds reasonable. Chris McGuiness doesn't have much more time to make an impression.

Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington said 1B Chris McGuiness will get the bulk of playing time at first base with 1B Mitch Moreland (hamstring) on the disabled list. The team thinks Moreland can return from the DL in the minimum amount of time.
Fantasy Tip: This news gives McGuiness more stable value in AL-only leagues, but he's still not an attractive option in mixed formats, and it'll be a short stint. Expect McGuiness to be sent back down to the minors when Moreland returns.

The Texas Rangers placed 1B Mitch Moreland (hamstring) on the 15-day disabled list with a Grade 1 hamstring strain Thursday, June 6, and recalled 1B Chris McGuiness from Triple-A Round Rock in a corresponding move. The team isn't guaranteeing that Moreland will return in 15 days. McGuiness was hitting .275 with a .382 on-base percentage, six home runs and 34 RBIs in 55 games with Round Rock. 1B Lance Berkman is playing first base and 2B Jeff Baker is the designated hitter Thursday.
Fantasy Tip: You should only be concerned with adding McGuiness in deep AL leagues, as he'll likely be a bat off the bench. Mike Olt was an option to come up, but he's recently recovered from vision problems and the Rangers probably had no intentions of rushing him back to the bigs.
If Ian Kinsler (rib) comes back from the DL before Moreland does, it'll allow the Rangers to keep Jurickson Profar in the lineup for a little longer, at least, if they want to move Kinsler to first base. Baker is the biggest winner for more at-bats in the short term. Add him in AL formats for depth.
