Colorado Rockies OF Carlos Gonzalez (finger), who left the game Thursday, May 1, against the New York Mets with a strained left index finger bruise in the fourth inning, was removed as a precaution by manager Walt Weiss. Gonzalez said his finger swelled after a foul ball during a first inning at-bat, one that ended with him homering to left field. Gonzalez was hampered last season by a right middle finger injury but he believes it is not a ligament issue like last season. Gonzalez is day to day but Weiss believes he will not miss a lot of time.

Colorado Rockies OF Eric Young Jr. may benefit this year as the team's super utility player, which is something new skipper Walt Weiss has a fondness for. "He's primarily an infielder," Weiss said. "But I see him - especially for his career, and for us - if he could be a super-utility type guy, where he can play some second and play some third. We're not going to just throw him in there. He's going to run around the infield, take some ground balls, see what that looks like and how he feels. Maybe that's an option for us, to get what he does in the lineup."
