Padres | Brandon Maurer earns second save

Fri, 15 Jul 2016 23:58:23 -0700

San Diego Padres RP Brandon Maurer pitched a perfect ninth inning, striking out one, against the San Francisco Giants on Friday, July 15, to earn a save.

Fantasy Tip: There haven't been many chances since Fernando Rodney was traded, but Maurer looked far more comfortable than he did in his previous save chance. Despite unimpressive overall numbers, Maurer last's 10 outings have covered 9 2/3 innings, during which he has allowed one run on six hits while striking out 12 and walking zero. He's the Padres closer for now, and as such he has some appeal for anyone seeking to supplement their position in the saves department.

Padres | Brandon Maurer logs first save

Fri, 01 Jul 2016 23:34:09 -0700

San Diego Padres RP Brandon Maurer allowed one run on two hits in one inning against the New York Yankees on Friday, July 1, to record the first save of his career.

Fantasy Tip: San Diego entered the ninth inning with a five-run lead, and Maurer entered with two on, nobody out and one run in. He threw some gas on the fire initially, and even let the tying run reach third, but he got Brett Gardner to ground out to end it. Still, that's not the kind of performance that'll engender much confidence in someone that carries a career ERA north of 5.00. Maurer makes sense for anyone desperate for saves, but his long-term future as closer is cloudy to say the least.

Padres | Brandon Maurer closing games for now

Fri, 01 Jul 2016 17:50:54 -0700

San Diego Padres RP Brandon Maurer will get the "first crack" to serve as the team's ninth-inning man, although he hasn't been named the official closer yet, according to manager Andy Green.

Fantasy Tip: Maurer is 0-2 with a 5.73 ERA in 39 appearances this season, with 18 walks and 47 strikeouts in 37 2/3 innings. The 25-year-old right-hander has no career saves in 152 lifetime MLB games but should be rostered in NL-only and cavernous mixed leagues, as well as owned by anyone looking for a desperation source of saves. If Maurer falters, RP Ryan Buchter could be next in line to close games, although it appears as though Green prefers to continue using him in a setup role.

Padres | Brandon Maurer's slider a great weapon

Tue, 10 May 2016 10:42:59 -0700

San Diego Padres RP Brandon Maurer's spring experimentation with a curveball has affected the movement and velocity of his primary pitch, his slider. "I was working on the curveball so much in Spring Training," Maurer said. "I don't really want it to be doing that, but I think I've got different rotation on the (slider) now. It breaks more down instead of a sweep. It's a slider, it's just not the power slider I was throwing last year." His slider is averaging 83.2 mph this year, which is five mph slower than in 2015. Opponents are hitting .167 against the pitch, and his strikeout rate using the slider is higher. His slider has become more "slurvish." Maurer has seven scoreless appearances since April 24, when his ERA was up to 7.00.

Fantasy Tip: Maurer's ERA is down to 4.02, and his 12.6 K/9 rate is elite as the Friars' eighth-inning setup man. Maurer is a great reliever to own in deeper leagues for his strikeouts, and he's a primary addition for saves speculators. Fernando Rodney has surprisingly been very sharp and is perfect in his saves chances, but if he stumbles, Maurer has the stuff to be very effective in a ninth-inning role.

Padres | Brandon Maurer moving back to bullpen

Tue, 22 Mar 2016 10:07:33 -0700

San Diego Padres RP Brandon Maurer will move back to the bullpen after competing for a rotation spot this spring, according to manager Andy Green.

Fantasy Tip: It was worth a shot, but Maurer will probably be more effective in the bullpen with his elite swinging-strike rates. He also is a ground-ball guy with plenty of control, so he can be useful to owners in deep mixed and NL-only leagues even if he's not closing. Should Fernando Rodney falter, too, Maurer could be an option in the ninth eventually.

Padres | Brandon Maurer, Colin Rea being monitored

Tue, 08 Mar 2016 17:34:31 -0800

San Diego Padres SP Brandon Maurer and Colin Rea will have their innings monitored if they win spots in the starting rotation, but manager Andy Green doesn't have a specific innings cap in mind.

Maurer only threw 51 innings last year before being shut down with shoulder inflammation in August. Maurer added 15 pounds of muscle this offseason to help prepare for a move back to the rotation. Rea threw 133 1/3 innings between two minor league stops last year and also put on weight during the winter.

Fantasy Tip: Rea is younger but Maurer has more intrigue for fantasy owners because of his ability to generate swings and misses. Maurer's transition to the rotation could be more difficult, though, and Rea's ground-ball profile could be attractive at Petco Park if he improves his command. Both could be relevant in deep mixed leagues with a rotation spot.
