Giants | Matt Cain placed on DL

Fri, 28 Aug 2015 16:52:07 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain (elbow) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday, Aug. 28, because of nerve irritation in his elbow. The Giants also recalled SP Chris Heston from Class AAA Sacramento. He received a cortisone shot and underwent an MRI a few days ago which came back clean. Cain hopes to be able to pitch after 15 days.

Fantasy Tip: Owners should monitor Cain's ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) recovery over the next few weeks to see if he has a chance to pitch again this season. Heston will be facing the St. Louis Cardinals this weekend and may not be a great option for fantasy owners.

Giants | Chris Heston might re-join team in L.A.

Wed, 26 Aug 2015 18:42:49 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Chris Heston is not scheduled to make another minor-league start currently. He might return sometime soon, perhaps re-joining the team next week in Los Angeles once rosters expand after Sept. 1.

Fantasy Tip: Heston was sent down to give him a rest, as his innings have been piling up. The team wants to make sure to keep him healthy and not do any long-term damage. It's bad news for FantasyScore players, because he has been a tremendous option at times this season.

Giants | Chris Heston being sent down

Fri, 21 Aug 2015 14:40:59 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Chris Heston will be sent to Class AAA Sacramento to receive a breather from the rotation. SP Mike Leake (hamstring) will return from the disabled list to take Heston's spot in the rotation.

Fantasy Tip: It sounds as if Heston could come back up and rejoin the rotation eventually before this season is over, so he should be kept in deeper mixed and NL-only leagues if you have room. Leake ($5,500, 11.0% of cap) had been lights out before being traded to San Fran and being injured. Practice caution when considering using him on FantasyScore for his next start.

Giants | Chris Heston struggling in August

Mon, 17 Aug 2015 23:32:24 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Chris Heston did not get the decision Monday, Aug. 17, against the St. Louis Cardinals as he walked five in 4 2/3 innings. Heston is 0-3 in four outings this month and has walked 16 in 26 2/3 innings in his last five outings.

Fantasy Tip: Heston ($7,400, 14.8% of cap) got off to a strong start but has tailed off, and he should be out of your FantasyScore lineup until Heston figures out his control issues.

Giants | Chris Heston struggling of late

Wed, 12 Aug 2015 11:05:38 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Chris Heston was 0-1 with an 8.31 ERA in his last two starts on the road and didn't finish the fifth inning in either outing. He threw a complete game May 12 in his only start against the Houston Astros, who he faces again Wednesday, Aug. 12.

Fantasy Tip: Before his last two road starts, Heston ($7,400, 14.8% of cap) had been pretty lights out, and he's been solid overall this year with a 3.48 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in 22 starts (134 2/3 innings). It shouldn't be overlooked that he's returning home to a pitcher-friendly environment where he's excelled this year (2.57 ERA). The Astros like to strike out in bunches, too, making Heston a risk/reward play today.

Giants | Chris Heston has been hard to hit

Mon, 27 Jul 2015 17:07:58 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Chris Heston is 5-1 with a 1.83 ERA in his last eight starts, and he has allowed three runs or less in each of those eight starts.

Fantasy Tip: Heston ($7,400, 14.8% of cap) faces the Milwaukee Brewers tonight. The Brewers have the third highest OPS (.805) in the month of July, so Heston isn't a slam dunk on FantasyScore. However, pitching in San Fran should help, where he has a 2.57 ERA.

Giants | Chris Heston struggles in day games

Thu, 25 Jun 2015 11:43:56 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Chris Heston is 1-3 with a 6.93 ERA in five starts during the day this year, as opposed to 6-2 with a 2.55 ERA at night.

Fantasy Tip: Heston ($5,700, 11.4% of cap) profiles as a great value play today on FantasyScore. The Padres rank second with 491 punchouts against right-handed starters this season, and has pitched better in the pitcher-friendly confines in San Fran in 2015.

Giants | Chris Heston has little luck with SD

Thu, 25 Jun 2015 04:31:34 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Chris Heston pitches against the San Diego Padres on Thursday, June 25. Heston has an 8.00 ERA in two previous starts against the Padres.

Fantasy Tip: Heston ($5,700, 11.4% of cap) has had a decent season with a 7-5 overall record, but this is an example of those matchups you need to watch in FantasyScore formats. Heston may find a way to break through, but consider San Diego is pitching James Shields (7-1). Shields is one of the most reliable pitchers in the majors, so Heston may not find any traction on Thursday. Look elsewhere.

Giants | Chris Heston notches seventh win

Sat, 20 Jun 2015 05:18:37 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Chris Heston allowed three earned runs on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings with a strikeout to record his seventh win of the season against the Los Angeles Dodgers Friday, June 19.

Fantasy Tip: Heston ($5,700, 11.4% of cap) has followed up his no-hitter with two respectable outings, but he shouldn't be confused with anything more than a low-end starter in mixed leagues. Outside of deep mixed and NL-only formats, his starts should likely be combed over, too. Seven of his 14 starts this season have returned fewer than five strikeouts, too, which limits his upside, especially in FantasyScore contests.

Giants | Chris Heston throws no-hitter

Tue, 09 Jun 2015 19:18:32 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Chris Heston threw a no-hitter Tuesday, June 9, against the New York Mets. He also did not walk any batters, but missed the perfect game due to three hit batsmen.

Fantasy Tip: Heston ($6,200; or 12.4% of cap) has been so-so for FantasyScore players most of the season, but he was masterful in this one. He’ll try to join Johnny Vander Meer as the only player in MLB history with back-to-back no-hitters when he works Sunday against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
