Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard (ribs) practiced in full Friday, Oct. 24, and is probable for Week 8 against the Baltimore Ravens.

Thu, 23 Oct 2014 13:43:33 -0700

Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard (ribs) was limited in practice for the second straight day Thursday, Oct. 23.

Bengals | Limited practice for Giovani Bernard

Wed, 22 Oct 2014 13:37:55 -0700

Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard (ribs) was listed as limited in practice Wednesday, Oct. 22.

Fantasy Tip: Bernard took a big hit in Week 7. The extent of his injury isn't known, but it's a good sign he was limited early in the week. At a cost of $6,900 (13.8% of cap) at FantasyScore this weekend, it might be tough for him to return you a profit against a Baltimore Ravens run defense that has been stout this year.

Bengals | Giovani Bernard has big stat line

Sun, 12 Oct 2014 17:26:01 -0700

Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard carried 18 times for 137 yards in Week 6 against the Carolina Panthers, including a career-long 89-yard rushing touchdown. He also chipped in with four receptions for 20 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Bernard, Mohamed Sanu and Jermaine Gresham all saw an increase in targets to make up for the absence of A.J. Green. The star receiver is expected to sit again next week, so Bernard could see more responsibilities.

Bengals | Giovani Bernard may return

Sun, 12 Oct 2014 13:03:36 -0700

Updating a previous report, Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard (shoulder) is expected to return to the team's Week 6 game after missing time with a shoulder injury.

Fantasy Tip: It appears like Bernard is only dealing with a minor injury, but owners should look for any updates after the game. Bernard should be in starting lineups if he is healthy enough to play in Week 7.

Bengals | Giovani Bernard suffers injury

Sun, 12 Oct 2014 12:28:35 -0700

Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard (shoulder) left the team's Week 6 game early because of a right shoulder injury and is considered questionable to return.

Fantasy Tip: The severity of Bernard's injury is not known at this time, so owners will need to look for updates in the next day or two. Jeremy Hill probably would start if Bernard misses any games and could be a sleeper option to start in fantasy leagues.

Bengals | Giovani Bernard makes big play

Sun, 12 Oct 2014 10:46:53 -0700

Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard rushed for an 89-yard touchdown in the second quarter of the team's Week 6 game.

Fantasy Tip: Bernard entered the season as one of the top running backs entering drafts and has not disappointed. Bernard should be a weekly start since he helps in the running and passing game.

Bengals | RB tandem might be asked to do more

Wed, 08 Oct 2014 21:46:14 -0700

Cincinnati Bengals RBs Giovani Bernard and Jeremy Hill might be asked to do more in Week 6 against the Carolina Panthers if WR A.J. Green (toe) is unable to play. "Never out of weapons," offensive coordinator Hue Jackson said Wednesday, Oct. 8. "We'll put somebody else up in there and let's go."

Bengals | Giovani Bernard-Jeremy Hill tandem impressing

Thu, 18 Sep 2014 11:11:48 -0700

Cincinnati Bengals RBs Giovani Bernard and Jeremy Hill have formed an impressive backfield tandem under offensive coordinator Hue Jackson so far after two games. Bernard is on pace for 328 carries and Hill is on pace for 152. Bernard and Hill combined for 164 yards on 42 carries in the Week 2 win over the Atlanta Falcons. "Both guys are showing they can not only run it, but they also have the ability to catch it and they not only can catch it, but they can make runs after the catch. Their creativity is a key factor in what's been going on. When you have weapons where anytime a guy can get the ball and they can take it to the house, it makes you feel good," former running backs coach Jim Anderson said.

Fantasy Tip: Bernard and Hill could both have big days again in Week 3 against the Tennessee Titans defense. Bernard is the lead back and will cost more at FantasyScore ($7,900; 15.8% of cap), which will make Hill ($5,500) more of a bargain most weeks.

Bengals | Giovani Bernard leads explosive duo

Wed, 17 Sep 2014 20:07:16 -0700

Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard is on pace for 328 carries, while rookie RB Jeremy Hill is ticketed for 152 for a total of 480. That would be the most by two Bengals backs in a single season, shattering the previous record of 405, set in 2000. Offensive coordinator Hue Jackson isn't estimating how many carries each will get on a given day, and said Wednesday, Sept. 17, that is varies from series to series. He calls plays on the sidelines rather than up in the booth so he can sense the ebb and flow of the game. "It's the way things unfold. But Gio is the starting tailback on this football team. So at the end of the day, he's going to get some chances that maybe everybody else doesn't get until he proves he can't or the other guy proves that he's better," Jackson said.

Fantasy Tip: Bernard is the lead dog in a talented backfield, a problem Cincinnati is likely happy to have. Bernard ($7900 or 15.8 percent of salary) will cost you a pretty penny, but he is also averaging 22.5 fantasy points per game as opposed to Hill ($5500 or 11.0 percent of salary), but just 9.8 fantasy points per game. Bernard is the better value, even at a more expensive price.

Bengals | Jeremy Hill sees limited work

Mon, 08 Sep 2014 08:50:21 -0700

Cincinnati Bengals RB Jeremy Hill only played 10 offensive snaps in Week 1. RB Giovani Bernard played 57 snaps in the game.

Fantasy Tip: Hill was expected to be used more and could be in the future. However, he's a questionable flex option at this point. Bernard is a mid-to-low RB1 option at the right price on FantasyScore.

Bengals | Giovani Bernard to be fed more

Thu, 04 Sep 2014 07:18:29 -0700

Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard will likely see more touches than RB Jeremy Hill in Week 1, according to head coach Marvin Lewis.

Fantasy Tip: The fact that this question was even asked bodes well for Hill. Bernard checks in at $6,700 on FantasyScore as a weak RB1 this weekend in Baltimore. Hill is priced at $4,300, and he is an interesting flex option for bargain shoppers this week.

Bengals | Jeremy Hill could have big role in running game

Wed, 16 Jul 2014 11:20:34 -0700

Cincinnati Bengals RB Jeremy Hill could split carries with RB Giovani Bernard this upcoming season and receive over 200 carries, in the opinion of Bengals.com's Geoff Hobson.

Fantasy Tip: It appears Hill will have a solid role in the offense even though he will not be a starter. Most owners should view Hill as more of No. 4 running back with upside entering drafts, but Hill will have more value than just a handcuff to Bernard.

Bengals | Giovani Bernard to be used early and often

Wed, 16 Jul 2014 05:45:10 -0700

Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard is expected to be utilized early and often in 2014. One beat writer expects 230 carries and 70 receptions.

Fantasy Tip: Bernard is a good RB2 in standard formats and could creep into RB1 status in PPR leagues.

Bengals | Want ball-possession offense

Thu, 26 Jun 2014 05:32:43 -0700

Cincinnati Bengals beat writer Geoff Hobson believes Bengals offensive coordinator Hue Jackson wants to have a more ball-possession offense that runs it more but sets up more explosive passes efficiently. That would mean fewer pass plays, but more potential big plays off of play-action.

Fantasy Tip: Giovani Bernard is going to have to prove that he can run the ball effectively 15-20 times in order for the play-action to work. Jeremy Hill will also be a factor in third-and-short situations that could free up A.J. Green and Marvin Jones downfield. Andy Dalton looks to be in optimal fantasy position this year in his contract year as a low-range QB1.

Bengals | Giovani Bernard, Jeremy Hill could play together

Mon, 09 Jun 2014 16:04:20 -0700

The Cincinnati Bengals are playing with the idea of using RBs Giovani Bernard and Jeremy Hill on the field at the same time. Both running backs have good hands out of the backfield and will present defenses with problems.

Bengals | Jeremy Hill fits well

Tue, 27 May 2014 07:02:43 -0700

The Cincinnati Bengals like the way RB Jeremy Hill ran against eight- and nine-man boxes in college. He'll complement Giovani Bernard in that regard.

Fantasy Tip: Hill is a nice late-round flier and could make an impact in TD-heavy leagues.

Bengals | Giovani Bernard likely to see time in slot

Sat, 24 May 2014 20:33:07 -0700

Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard is expected to see more time in the slot this season following the departure of WR Andrew Hawkins (Browns). Bernard could also be flanked out wide on occasion, tossing a screen to him while pulling a guard or tackle to create a nightmare scenario for a defensive back trying to find the elusive back behind a big body.

Fantasy Tip: Bernard should be a beast in points-per-receptions (PPR) leagues for fantasy owners, and if veteran BenJarvus Green-Ellis is jettisoned, Bernard could flirt with 1,000 rushing yards. He'll be a tremendous RB1 in PPR leagues, and a solid RB2 or flex play in standard formats.

Bengals | Giovani Bernard could be more involved as receiver

Thu, 22 May 2014 17:40:22 -0700

Cincinnati Bengals running backs coach Kyle Caskey indicated the team would like to get RB Giovani Bernard more involved in the passing game this upcoming season. "We want to do more with him because he can do that," Caskey said. "It's not just put him in the slot. We want him everywhere on the field. Make people guess where's he at. You have to make a decision to either play the run or play the pass. What do you do when he's on the field? He's a lot like [Detroit Lions RB Reggie Bush] where you have to be aware at all times."

Fantasy Tip: It appears Bernard will have a big role in the offense in 2014, which will increase his fantasy value. He should be considered a starting running back in all fantasy leagues this upcoming season.

Bengals | Picking up the pace offensively

Thu, 22 May 2014 14:38:38 -0700

Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Hue Jackson wants to implement an up-tempo offense and intends to be heavily committed to the running game to set up the pass. Bengals OT Andrew Whitworth said the team is planning to get as many snaps in as they can.

Fantasy Tip: A more conservative offensive approach will improve the value of Cincy's running backs, with Giovani Bernard standing to have the best fantasy season. BenJarvus Green-Ellis shouldn't be written off just yet, since rookie Jeremy Hill having a fantasy-worthy role isn't a lock. Andy Dalton should become more efficient, but that isn't necessarily a good thing for fantasy value. Ultimately, WR A.J. Green remains the only weapon with consistent appeal.

Bengals | Giovani Bernard appears to be starter

Mon, 19 May 2014 13:01:21 -0700

Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard appears to be the favorite for the starting running back job at this point.

Fantasy Tip: Even if Bernard is not the starting running back this season, he will still have fantasy value since he has a big role in the offense. Bernard should be a starting running back in all leagues and likely will be an early round draft choice.

Bengals | Giovani Bernard expected to have bigger role

Wed, 05 Mar 2014 12:51:20 -0800

Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard is expected to receive around 300 touches on offense next season.

Fantasy Tip: Bernard had a terrific rookie season and likely will be getting more involved in the offense. Bernard should be seen as a starting running back in all leagues next season and could also be a first-round pick in some leagues.

Bengals | Giovani Bernard expects complicated playbook

Thu, 06 Feb 2014 09:12:59 -0800

Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard said he expects a wild playbook from new offensive coordinator Hue Jackson in 2014. "For me and Benny, I think we've done a good job thus far. I think we can continue to keep doing a good job," Bernard said. "We just got to go into it with an open mind, and he's (Jackson) going to create this craziest playbook ever, but it's going to be fun. I'm excited for it." Jackson is expected to move the Bengals to a more ground-and-pound offensive approach including Bernard and RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis.

Bengals | Two running backs on verge of milestones

Sun, 15 Dec 2013 01:45:05 -0800

Cincinnati Bengals RBs Benjarvus Green-Ellis and Giovani Bernard are the first Bengals duo to run for over 600 yards each since 1988, when Ickey Woods and James Brooks helped power Cincinnati to its second Super Bowl. Only once since 1992 have the Bengals had two backs with 160 carries or more in a season, but Green-Ellis and Bernard are on pace to join Kenny Watson and Rudi Johnson as the second duo to accomplish it. In 2007, Watson had 178 carries to Johnson's 170.

Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard finished with 99 yards on 12 carries in the Week 14 game against the Indianapolis Colts, just missing his first career 100-yard game. He also added 49 yards on four receptions.

Fantasy Tip: Bernard has emerged as a tremendous RB2 or flex fantasy option, especially in points-per-reception (PPR) formats.

Bengals | Defense readying for Giovani Bernard

Fri, 08 Nov 2013 18:54:04 -0800

The Baltimore Ravens defense are readying for Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard, and they know the dangerous running back can transform a football game into an elaborate game of tag, eluding defenders with his unique set of cuts and moves. "He's almost like a punt returner that's playing running back," Ravens DE Chris Canty said Friday, Nov. 8. "He's a jitterbug. He gets in and out of cuts very quickly. He can accelerate very quickly He gets into those small holes."

Fri, 08 Nov 2013 11:18:06 -0800

Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard (ribs) was limited in practice Friday, Nov. 8, and is questionable for Week 10.

Fantasy Tip: Bernard should be OK for the team's Week 10 game, but double check his status on game day just to be sure. He is an intriguing option when healthy that has seen his value increase as the season has gone on.

Bengals | To limit Giovani Bernard's load

Fri, 08 Nov 2013 10:57:25 -0800

Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden wants to limit RB Giovani Bernard's workload in the second half of the season in order to keep him fresh and healthy. In the last four games, RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis has 60 touches to 52 for Bernard. "To say we're going to give the ball to Gio 25 times each week is kind of unrealistic," Gruden said. "He needs spelling. He needs a bigger back in there like BenJarvus to take 10, 12, 15 carries a game."

Fantasy Tip: Expect the status quo to continue in Cincy as far as touches are split between these two backs. Bernard's currrent workload is enough to make him fantasy-relevant on a weekly basis, but don't expect him to become the bell-cow running back suddenly over the Law Firm.

Cincinnati Bengals RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis had 10 rushes for 29 yards and a touchdown in Week 3, while RB Giovani Bernard had 10 carries for 50 yards and a score. Bernard also pitched in four catches for 49 yards.

Fantasy Tip: We feel Bernard elevated himself even more in Week 3, and he has proven to be more effective than Green-Ellis. Bernard has the edge right now in fantasy value. Green-Ellis will still get looks, but his grip on the featured role has vanished.

Bengals | Giovani Bernard's role growing

Fri, 20 Sep 2013 06:49:53 -0700

Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard's role is expected to grow in the offense. Offensive coordinator Jay Gruden said Bernard and BenJarvus Green-Ellis should be closer to a 50-50 split in the coming weeks. Gruden feels more comfortable opening the playbook more now that he knows Bernard can handle pass protection.

Fantasy Tip: We alluded to this earlier in the week, and it looks like Green-Ellis' stock is decreasing. Bernard should be owned in most formats, and he could potentially take over as the featured back before the season ends.

Fantasy Tip: We could start to see Bernard take more action away from BenJarvus Green-Ellis. BGE ran 22 times for 75 yards in Week 2 after amassing 25 yards in Week 1. Bernard is simply too dynamic for the team to ignore at this point.

Bengals | Not ready to reduce role of BenJarvus Green-Ellis

Wed, 31 Jul 2013 08:47:45 -0700

Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden hinted before training camp that there might be an equal distribution of carries between RBs BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Giovani Bernard, but that is unlikely to happen. The team has been impressed by Bernard, but they're not ready to reduce Green-Ellis' role.

Fantasy Tip: Green-Ellis averaged 92.8 rushing yards per game over the final six regular season games in 2012, and they plan to use him as their closer in games. The plan is contingent upon Bernard producing big plays, especially in the passing game, keeping Green-Ellis fresh for later in contests.
