Jets | Todd Bowles confident in Geno Smith

Sat, 23 Jul 2016 22:48:21 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith remains in line to start with the contract impasse between the organization and free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick. Head coach Todd Bowles said he is confident in Smith as the starter. "I think Geno can be a good starter, but he's got to prove it in training camp like everybody else," Bowles said. "It's not just about the quarterback position. You got to have a team around that position to play ball, but he's been in the system a year. He has a better grasp of it going into training camp and we'll see what he does."

Fantasy Tip: Smith has completed 57.9 percent of his 852 career pass attempts for 5,836 yards, 27 touchdowns and 36 interceptions. His first full season was a train wreck, but his 2014 wasn't all that bad. He also has that dual-threat dimension to make him a really, really poor man's Cam Newton when he is under center. If he hangs onto the starting job he is a Top 25 fantasy option at his position.

Jets | Ryan Fitzpatrick situation could linger

Mon, 18 Jul 2016 16:37:08 -0700

It looks as though the New York Jets may wait to view the practice repetitions of QB Geno Smith in training camp before there is more movement in talks with free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (Jets), according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: The stalemate continues. It's probably in the best interests of both parties to have a reunion, but both sides are being stubborn. If Fitz doesn't return, Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker will surely suffer. If the QB does return, he's a high-end fantasy backup, at best. Stay tuned.

Jets | New York won't wait forever on QB

Wed, 15 Jun 2016 15:24:16 -0700

Free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick's (Jets) impasse with the New York Jets does have an expiration date, according to head coach Todd Bowles. Bowles said the Jets will rely on QB Geno Smith to be their starter if Fitzpatrick's contract is not worked out by a certain time. Bowles didn't say when exactly that time would be, but he indicated that it wouldn't be preseason. Fitzpatrick would start if/when he does re-sign, though.

Fantasy Tip: Fitzpatrick would be the only Jets quarterback with any meaningful fantasy value if he does return. Smith is a career fantasy backup, while Fitzpatrick is in low-end QB1 to high-end QB2 territory.

Jets | Geno Smith practiced with top receivers

Thu, 09 Jun 2016 16:20:15 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith has thrown to Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown, New York Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr. and Miami Dolphins WR Jarvis Landry this offseason. Landry said eight or nine players gathered twice a week for workouts in South Florida.

Fantasy Tip: The talent of the receivers does not necessarily result in an increase in the talent of the quarterback. Smith is an inconsistent quarterback, and he won't even start if/when Ryan Fitzpatrick is re-signed. You can continue to keep Smith off your fantasy blueprint.

Jets | Brandon Marshall praises Geno Smith

Fri, 03 Jun 2016 21:54:29 -0700

New York Jets WR Brandon Marshall said it seems like the game has slowed down for QB Geno Smith, and he added that Smith has been playing with poise during OTAs.

Fantasy Tip: Depending on how the Ryan Fitzpatrick situation plays out, Smith could be starting for the Jets in Week 1. However, there is nothing in Smith's history that suggests he can be more than a low-end fantasy backup.

Jets | New York comfortable with quarterbacks

Sun, 29 May 2016 11:08:11 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith is currently slated to start at quarterback with free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (Jets) still not re-signed. Offensive coordinator Chan Gailey, however, said the Jets are comfortable with whoever wins the starting job.

Fantasy Tip: This implies that rookie Christian Hackenberg may have a chance at the starting job, but it would behoove the Jets to bring back Fitzpatrick. If Fitzpatrick somehow isn't brought back, then Smith would be the better option, but he shouldn't be starting for any fantasy squads.

Jets | Geno Smith receiving first-team reps

Thu, 26 May 2016 10:38:28 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith is receiving first-team repetitions ahead of QBs Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg during organized team activities. However, the coaching staff hasn't defined the specific positions on the depth chart for the quarterbacks.

Fantasy Tip: Smith will likely be the Jets' starter unless they re-sign Ryan Fitzpatrick. Smith has talent but has been wildly inconsistent when he's started for Gang Green. If he enters as the starter in Week 1, he's firmly in the fantasy backup consideration.

Jets | New York could keep four quarterbacks

Tue, 03 May 2016 16:15:31 -0700

New York Jets QBs Geno Smith, Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg, and possibly free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (Jets) could all be on New York's roster when the 2016 regular season commences. General manager Mike Maccagnan said if it's in the best interest of the team then they will keep four quarterbacks. "It's been done before," Maccagnan said. "To me, it's a position where you have to take some time to really invest, grow and develop players."

Fantasy Tip: The Jets aren't investing as much as they should be, though, as Fitzpatrick is still on the free-agent market. Smith is in line to start right now, but he has proven to be too inconsistent to consider starting in tradition fantasy leagues. Fitzpatrick has the most value for the Jets and for fantasy purposes.

Jets | General manager excited for Geno Smith

Tue, 03 May 2016 13:31:38 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith could start for the Jets in 2016 if free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (Jets) is not re-signed. That prospect has general manager Mike Maccagnan excited. "Right now, Geno has been a starter for us, and actually played quite well prior to getting hurt last year, and was doing a good job in the offseason," Maccagnan said. "So we're kind of excited to see what Geno can do, coming back. And we feel good about that."

Fantasy Tip: The Jets do still want to re-sign Fitzpatrick, and he's definitely a more reliable fantasy option than Smith. Even if Smith somehow does start, he shouldn't be starting on your fantasy teams.

Jets | Geno Smith No. 1 QB for now

Sat, 30 Apr 2016 07:34:46 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith will be the starting quarterback when offseason workouts begin, but the team is still looking to re-sign free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

Fantasy Tip: Smith will work with the first-team offense as long as the team does not re-sign Fitzpatrick and likely would lose that spot if Fitzpatrick returns. Smith could be the starting quarterback in 2016 if another quarterback is not added but would only be a No. 2 quarterback in deeper leagues.

Jets | Todd Bowles lauds Geno Smith

Tue, 22 Mar 2016 09:55:06 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith showed maturity in 2015, and head coach Todd Bowles expressed confidence in New York's contingency plans at quarterback if they can't re-sign QB Ryan Fitzpatrick. "We thought Geno matured last year," Bowles said. "It's something you couldn't see because he didn't play as much, but you saw it in practice and you saw it in his demeanor in off-the-field stuff. Geno is still our quarterback, he's still on our team."

Fantasy Tip: If Fitzpatrick doesn't come back, expect the Jets to bring in another quarterback to compete with Smith for the starting job. Smith has shown flashes of brilliance in the NFL, but he's been far too inconsistent for fantasy owners to draft him as anything more than a backup if he's starting in 2016.

Jets | No rush in Ryan Fitzpatrick talks

Mon, 21 Mar 2016 16:55:33 -0700

The New York Jets have no sense of urgency in contract talks to re-sign QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, according to owner Woody Johnson. Fitzpatrick could miss the entire offseason program because of his familiarity with offensive coordinator Chan Gailey's offense. General manager Mike Maccagnan said QB Geno Smith is a "definite possibility" as a replacement if Fitzpatrick doesn't return.

Fantasy Tip: The Jets and Fitz are at a stalemate right now, so stay tuned. The Amish Rifle would have the highest fantasy value if he stayed in New York, where he set career highs last year, but even then he'd be a high-end fantasy backup, at best.

Jets | Geno Smith ready to lead team?

Sun, 20 Mar 2016 16:56:30 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith is capable of leading the franchise if free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick doesn't re-sign, according to free-agent OG Willie Colon. "I think he's taken on everything," said Colon. "I think he's ready to rise. I still have confidence in him. I think with the pieces we have around him, and continue to put around him, he can be successful. I honestly believe that. I think Geno's a good quarterback."

Fantasy Tip: Smith would have solid weapons to work with on offense if he becomes the starter for the Jets, but expecting him to be more than a mid-range QB2 in 2016 would be asking for disappointment.

Jets | Geno Smith remains backup

Wed, 24 Feb 2016 11:53:09 -0800

New York Jets QB Geno Smith remains the team's backup quarterback right now, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

Fantasy Tip: The Jets will work to re-sign Ryan Fitzpatrick after he produced a fine 2015 campaign that fell just short of a playoff berth. As long as Smith is holding a clipboard, he has zero fantasy appeal.

Jets | Bryce Petty has shot at No. 2 job

Wed, 17 Feb 2016 10:39:30 -0800

New York Jets QB Bryce Petty will have a chance to win the backup job behind Ryan Fitzpatrick, who is an impending free agent the team hopes to sign to a multi-year deal this offseason. The team reportedly wants Petty to beat out Geno Smith, but intends to keep the latter around during the final year of his contract.

New York Jets QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (thumb) and QB Geno Smith (shoulder) practiced Wednesday, Nov. 11, and are probable for Week 10 Thursday, Nov. 12.

Fantasy Tip: Fitzpatrick ($6,100, 12.2% of cap) played well with 21.6 fantasy points last week, but he has one of the tougher matchups against the Buffalo Bills. He's not a FantasyScore option with a lot of upside.

Jets | Geno Smith appears OK

Wed, 04 Nov 2015 11:49:51 -0800

New York Jets QB Geno Smith (shoulder) seemed fine during individual and positional drills Wednesday, Nov. 4.

Fantasy Tip: The bad news for Smith ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) is that Ryan Fitzpatrick (thumb) also took part in the portion of practice open to the media. Smith wouldn't be a good FantasyScore grab against the Jacksonville Jaguars if he plays.

Jets | Ryan Fitzpatrick, Geno Smith practicing

Wed, 04 Nov 2015 11:01:30 -0800

New York Jets QBs Ryan Fitzpatrick (thumb) and Geno Smith (shoulder) both took part in throwing drills in practice Wednesday, Nov. 4, with their helmets on. Fitzpatrick was wearing a protective glove on his left hand.

Fantasy Tip: It'll be a matter of pain tolerance for Fitzpatrick ($5,700, 11.4% of cap) likely for the remainder of the year, and he'll need surgery to fix torn ligaments in his thumb at some point. There's really no reason to risk it with a quarterback that could have trouble directing the ball if he plays, even against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Jets | Ryan Fitzpatrick will have to deal with pain

Mon, 02 Nov 2015 13:46:44 -0800

Updating previous reports, New York Jets QB Ryan Fitzpatrick's (thumb) ability to play in Week 9 will largely come down to pain tolerance, according to head coach Todd Bowles. QB Geno Smith (shoulder) underwent tests Monday, Nov. 2, that revealed a "big bruise." Smith has no structural damage to his shoulder. Bowles is not very confident that Fitzpatrick will be able to play against the Jacksonville Jaguars right now. The Jets are strongly considering trading for a veteran quarterback before the trade deadline Tuesday, Nov. 3.

Fantasy Tip: Plan on avoiding the Jets quarterback situation in Week 9 on FantasyScore no matter what happens here. Neither quarterback is likely to be 100% for the matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Jets | Ryan Fitzpatrick, Geno Smith day-to-day

Mon, 02 Nov 2015 13:30:51 -0800

New York Jets QBs Ryan Fitzpatrick (thumb) and Geno Smith (shoulder) are listed as day-to-day, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

Fantasy Tip: Fitzpatrick will need surgery on his thumb at some point, but he might be able to play through it until then. Selecting one of these two quarterbacks on FantasyScore in Week 9 against the Jacksonville Jaguars isn't advised, and you'll probably want to downgrade the Jets receivers if New York's QB is playing injured this weekend.

Jets | Geno Smith banged up in loss

Sun, 01 Nov 2015 17:07:18 -0800

New York Jets QB Geno Smith (abdomen, shoulder) suffered a left shoulder injury and abdominal issue in the Week 8 game against the Oakland Raiders after replacing the injured QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (thumb).

Fantasy Tip: Smith ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) might have been in line to start in Week 9 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but now it is up in the air. Rookie Bryce Petty ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) might actually be forced into action in Week 9.

Sun, 01 Nov 2015 14:54:20 -0800

New York Jets QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (thumb) will miss the remainder of the game Sunday, Nov. 1, with a left thumb injury. Jets coach Todd Bowles indicated Fitzpatrick had a ligament issue with his thumb. QB Geno Smith is in the game at quarterback.

Fantasy Tip: Fitzpatrick ($5,700, 11.4% of cap) will likely miss an extended period of time, but don't get too used to Smith ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) at the helm. The Oakland Raiders were beating the Jets in convincing fashion, and the Jets front office is already working the phones trying to find QB help. Stay tuned to see where this lands.

Fantasy Tip: Fitzpatrick ($5,700, 11.4% of cap) is officially listed as questionable to return. Smith ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) is seeing his first action of the 2015 season versus Oakland and will be the Jets' starter at quarterback for as long as Fitzpatrick is sidelined. Smith could be fully healthy by Week 6, but head coach Todd Bowles has made it sound like Smith still has a ways to go. "He has to get ready for practice," Bowles said. "He has to read defenses all over again. It's like starting training camp when you haven't read defenses and set the fronts and called out blitz protections and everything like that. It takes a minute. Once he gets back to that flow, I think it'll start to come back to him pretty good."

Tue, 22 Sep 2015 13:57:23 -0700

New York Jets QB Ryan Fitzpatrick is the starting quarterback no matter when QB Geno Smith (jaw) is healthy enough to return, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

Fantasy Tip: Fitzpatrick ($5,500, 11.0% of cap) played well in Week 2 against the Indianapolis Colts. He's relatively cheap for quarterbacks on FantasyScore and enables owners to invest in higher-priced studs if wanted. The matchup isn't that bad either against the Philadelphia Eagles.

New York Jets QB Geno Smith (jaw) has been taking part in 7-on-7 drills during practice this week, according to head coach Todd Bowles. Smith will travel with the team for their Week 2 game against the Indianapolis Colts but will not play.

Fantasy Tip: Smith ($5,300, 10.6% of cap) is making progress but is expected to miss the next few games while his jaw heals. Ryan Fitzpatrick ($5,500, 11.0% of cap) had some success in Week 1 but is not a great fantasy option on FantasyScore.

Fri, 18 Sep 2015 10:38:39 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith (jaw) has no changes to his timetable, according to head coach Todd Bowles. "It's going to take a while," Bowles said.

Fantasy Tip: Smith ($5,300, 10.6% of cap) shouldn't be on anyone's fantasy radar for the time being. There's a chance he could regain the starting role at some point when he's healthy, but who knows when that'll be. Once he does return, he's not guaranteed back the starting quarterback position either if Ryan Fitzpatrick is playing well. Fantasy Tip: Smith is expected to miss a few weeks of the regular season and may not regain his starting job if QB Ryan Fitzpatrick plays well. Owners probably should avoid Smith in drafts.

Jets | Geno Smith present at practice

Mon, 24 Aug 2015 10:58:00 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith (jaw) attended practice Monday, Aug. 24, but did not participate in drills. He was wearing a no-contact jersey during practice.

Fantasy Tip: Smith is expected to miss several weeks because of his jaw injury, so owners should not select him in drafts. Ryan Fitzpatrick will start while he is out, but he is not a great fantasy option either.

Jets | Geno Smith nearly replaced by Cousins

Fri, 21 Aug 2015 09:39:54 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith was nearly replaced by Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins, whom the team would have traded for if they hired Dan Quinn as head coach. Quinn wanted to bring Kyle Shanahan aboard as offensive coordinator, and the tandem sought to acquire Cousins to be the starting quarterback for the Jets.

Fantasy Tip: Ryan Fitzpatrick has a chance to keep the starting job once Smith returns from his broken jaw. Both signal callers are QB2's that should be left on waivers except in deeper leagues.

Jets | Geno Smith won't be on sideline

Wed, 19 Aug 2015 15:43:09 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith (jaw) will not be on the sideline Friday, Aug. 21, versus the Atlanta Falcons. Head coach Todd Bowles said inactive injured players will not be permitted on the sideline while the game is ongoing.

Fantasy Tip: It's not that Smith is being shunned or put in the doghouse. Bowles just doesn't want anyone injured being at risk on the sideline. It's a precautionary policy he has. Smith is expected to miss at least the first four games of the season. Stay away from him in fantasy drafts.
