Jets | Geno Smith not throwing

Wed, 29 Oct 2014 10:11:59 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith (shoulder) did not throw any passes during the media-access portion of practice Wednesday, Oct. 29. Smith did participate in footwork and ball security drills.

Fantasy Tip: Smith has lost his starting job to Michael Vick and may not get another start for a while. Owners can consider dropping Smith in their leagues if they need the roster spot. Vick could be an option in deeper leagues but probably should not be an option on FantasyScore this week.

Jets | Geno Smith's availability in question

Tue, 28 Oct 2014 14:06:56 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith's (shoulder) availability for Week 9 against the Kansas City Chiefs is in question, and he's experiencing "minor soreness." However, head coach Rex Ryan downplayed the severity of Smith's injury, and said the team hopes he can resume throwing by Wednesday, Oct. 29. QB Matt Simms will be ready just in case.

Fantasy Tip: Smith should be avoided everywhere after it was announced that Michael Vick ($4,400; 8.8% of cap) will start against the Chiefs. It's not a wise move to rely on Vick in his first start of the season.

Mon, 27 Oct 2014 12:06:54 -0700

New York Jets QBs Geno Smith and Michael Vick have still not been told who will start Week 9.

Fantasy Tip: Whoever it is, it's probably best not to consider starting him. Neither has performed well this year and the Kansas City Chiefs have done a good job overall against the pass.

Fantasy Tip: Vick likely will play the rest of the game if he does not suffer an injury. It is not known if Vick will start Week 9 or if Smith will receive another start. Owners will need to monitor the situation, but neither quarterback is a strong starting option.

New York Jets QB Geno Smith will start Thursday, Oct. 16, against the New England Patriots, according to head coach Rex Ryan.

New York Jets QB Geno Smith has been pressured on 31 percent of his dropbacks in his career, which is the third highest among quarterbacks in the NFL during that span.

Fantasy Tip: Smith has struggled this season, throwing six interceptions with his four touchdowns, but appears to still have a hold on his starting job. Smith costs $4,300 on FantasyScore, but owners should consider spending some more money on a better quarterback.

Sun, 05 Oct 2014 16:46:31 -0700

Updating a previous report, New York Jets QB Geno Smith will start in Week 6, head coach Rex Ryan said Sunday, Oct. 5.

Fantasy Tip: Smith was benched at halftime of Sunday's blowout loss in San Diego, but Michael Vick was unable to spark the team in his two quarters of action. Regardless of which quarterback starts, neither is useful from a fantasy perspective.

Jets | Rex Ryan backs Geno Smith

Mon, 29 Sep 2014 18:20:47 -0700

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan publicly remained supportive of QB Geno Smith Monday, Sept. 29. He said he talked to the quarterback about his incident with yelling a profanity at a fan. "Unfortunately, I made the same mistake," Ryan said. "Obviously, it's something I regretted when I did it, and I know Geno feels the same way." Ryan said he is sticking with Smith, who has thrown at least one interception in 16 of his 20 career starts, despite the fact fans are clamoring for backup QB Michael Vick to get a chance.

Fantasy Tip: If you're in a fantasy league which uses two starting quarterbacks, it might not be a terrible idea to stash Vick. Smith has not helped himself with a slow start and plenty of mistakes, and it might only be a matter of time before Smith loses support.

Jets | Geno Smith to remain starter

Mon, 29 Sep 2014 10:35:13 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith will remain the team's starting quarterback despite another shaky performance in a Week 4 loss to the Detroit Lions. "I'm confident in Geno. If Geno's healthy, then Geno Smith will start," head coach Rex Ryan said after the game. "I'm not gonna replace him. I feel good about Geno, and again, I think he's gonna get it turned. He's a tough, resilient young man, and I think we're gonna win."

Fantasy Tip: Smith is skating on thin ice right now. Another bad performance could lead to a benching. Smith and the Jets face the San Diego Chargers on the road in Week 5. It's not a matchup worth trusting Smith, even if he is cheap at FantasyScore.

New York Jets QB Geno Smith completed 17 of his 33 pass attempts for 209 yards with one touchdown, one interception and one fumble lost in Week 4 against the Detroit Lions. Fans were chanting for backup QB Michael Vick late in the game.

Fantasy Tip: Head coach Rex Ryan has said Smith is the starter, but for fantasy purposes he is not someone you will want to rely upon unless you are absolutely desperate due to bye weeks or injuries.

Jets | Jets to simplify offense?

Thu, 25 Sep 2014 16:25:36 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith won't be benched after an inconsistent start to the season, according to offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg. However, Mornhinweg admitted that the team may need to scale back the offensive game plan because he "put too much on (Smith's) plate." "We need to develop Geno. Listen, Geno is going to be just fine. ... To be great, in many cases, you have to go through some failures -- and sometimes it's on a Monday night," Mornhinweg said. Smith already has five turnovers in three games, and he had two costly turnovers in the team's Week 3 loss. Mornhinweg said he needs to put Smith in better positions, especially in the red zone. The Jets went away from the run in the red zone Monday night and relied too much on Smith's arm.

Fantasy Tip: The good news for Smith owners is that his leash is much longer. Michael Vick is no threat to take his job, at least not anytime soon. However, a simplified offense in New York may mean more reliance on the ground game, which would hurt Smith's fantasy value. Against the Detroit Lions in Week 4, Smith may be forced to throw more often than desired.

Wed, 24 Sep 2014 12:15:20 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith is expected to start for the remaining games this season, according to head coach Rex Ryan.

Tue, 23 Sep 2014 13:56:27 -0700

Updating previous reports, New York Jets QB Geno Smith remains the team's starting quarterback, according to head coach Rex Ryan. "Everybody is behind Geno. He's our quarterback and our football team believes in him," Ryan said.

Fantasy Tip: A disastrous performance in Week 4 against the Detroit Lions could quickly change the team's tune. Smith will cost you $5,300 at FantasyScore this week, but there are better options to be had at the position.

Jets | Michael Vick to be more involved?

Tue, 23 Sep 2014 11:10:25 -0700

New York Jets QB Michael Vick could be more involved in the offense moving forward, as QB Geno Smith has five turnovers in the first three games. "I'm never going to say no because I learned that from (the media)," head coach Rex Ryan said. However, Ryan still supports Smith and thinks he'll be fine. Smith looks more comfortable in offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg's system, but the results haven't followed.

Fantasy Tip: Smith would probably need a few more poor performances for a change to be made. Smith's up and down performances continue to make him a shaky weekly fantasy play.

Jets | Rex Ryan defends Geno Smith

Tue, 23 Sep 2014 09:44:13 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith didn't take a step back in his development in the Week 3 loss to the Chicago Bears Monday, Sept. 22, according to head coach Rex Ryan. "Guys, this ain't the same quarterback as he was at the beginning of last year, I don't care what people say," Ryan said. "Did he make a mistake? Absolutely. Their quarterback made a mistake but the difference was, they caught the ball and we didn't. ... I feel good about this football team and I feel good about Geno Smith."

Fantasy Tip: Smith was 26-for-43 for 316 yards, a touchdown and two costly interceptions - one for a touchdown and one in the red zone. Smith has talent, but he's been wildly inconsistent. He'll be a dice roll again in Week 4 against the Detroit Lions for $5,300 (10.6% of cap) at FantasyScore.

Jets | Geno Smith tabbed as starter

Fri, 22 Aug 2014 21:30:15 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith will be the team's week-to-week starting quarterback for the regular season, head coach Rex Ryan said Friday, Aug. 22, after the preseason game against the New York Giants. Smith completed nine of his 14 pass attempts for 137 yards and a touchdown, and he also ran three times for 17 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Smith is still no better than a Top 25 fantasy quarterback in most formats. If your league requires two starting QBs, then you definitely want Smith on your roster. But at this point he is nothing more than a bye-week replacement.

Jets | Geno Smith plays two series with starters

Fri, 08 Aug 2014 09:13:25 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith went 4-for-6 for 33 yards in two series with the first-team offense in the team's first preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts Thursday, Aug. 7. He also had a 10-yard scramble on a read-option play that was impressive.

Fantasy Tip: It was the first preseason game, so nothing much came out of it. Smith didn't look terrible but he wasn't anything special, either. As things stand now, he's the starter ahead of Michael Vick, and it's Smith's job to lose during the preseason.

Thu, 31 Jul 2014 13:09:42 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith has fixed his turnover problems so far this offseason, according to offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg.

Jets | Geno Smith on shorter leash?

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 14:42:03 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith may be on a shorter leash this year with QB Michael Vick as his backup. Head coach Rex Ryan said the team's quarterback situation is ideal in that there is a veteran backup waiting who knows the system if Smith doesn't succeed.

Fantasy Tip: Smith undoubtedly had a tumultuous rookie season in 2013. He's not a reliable fantasy quarterback by any means at this point in his career. Smith and Vick should both be drafted as a backup.

New York Jets QB Geno Smith logged three-quarters of the first-team practice reps for the second straight day on Friday, July 25.

Fantasy Tip: He's holding off Michael Vick but still will have to show marked improvement as we inch closer to fantasy drafts. For those willing to throw a late stab on him, they could be rewarded with stronger week-to-week value, or simply will move on with little consequence.

"(Geno) knows I'm going to push him to the limit, and I want him to push me," Vick said. "There's going to be times where he's gonna have to pick me up, where I'm gonna have to pick him up. I'm always gonna be there for him, always gonna help him out, and I think he's done a great job."

Fantasy Tip: Unless something drastic changes during training camp, Smith will be the team's starter at QB entering Week 1. That could change once the season starts, but until then, Vick should be left to the waiver wire.
