CBS NFL analyst Phil Simms thinks that New York Jets QB Geno Smith would be the top quarterback taken in the 2014 draft if he was part of the process this year. "I think if Geno Smith was in this draft class he would be the number one guy, without question," Simms said.

ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. thinks the New York Jets desperately need to draft some quarterback insurance for QB Geno Smith this year. However, Kiper believes New York should look to select a quarterback later in the draft, with Easter Illinois QB Jimmy Garoppolo, Louisiana State QB Zach Mettenberger, Georgia QB Aaron Murray and San Jose State QB David Fales as options.

New York Jets general manager John Idzik has spoken recently with QB Geno Smith after off season incidents. "We've talked a lot about when you're in the NFL and when you're a quarterback in the NFL and when you're a quarterback in a big market such as New York, all eyes are on you 24/7," Idzik said. "I think Geno is experiencing this firsthand. I've kept in close contact with him. I think this is part of learning how to deal with those things. We've addressed him. He's addressed them. No concerns really that way. It's how to deal with your celebrity and visibility that goes along with the position."

New York Jets QB Geno Smith expects to be the team's starting quarterback next year even if the team is hesitant to name him as the starter. Smith isn't bothered at all that head coach Rex Ryan refuses to commit to him in 2014. "It just means more competition," Smith said. "It gives me that fire I've always had in me. ... It's going to make me work harder, make me tougher, make me work that much harder in OTAs if I have someone to compete against."

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan praised QB Geno Smith for how he finished the 2013 season. "I think there are very few players that grew as much as Geno did," Ryan said. "He had to come a million miles, and he did. When you look at the way he closed out, we saw our team ascending and part of that was the way Geno played. Statistically, he had the second-highest quarterback rating over the last month of the season. I think that's something that people don't focus on, but it's a fact."
