Patriots | Rex Burkhead steps up

Sat, 19 Aug 2017 21:39:12 -0700

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead worked with the starters in a 27-23 loss to the Houston Texans in the preseason Saturday, Aug. 19, finishing with seven carries for 20 yards and three catches for 50 yards and a touchdown.

Fantasy Tip: With Mike Gillislee sidelined, it was Burkhead who was thrust into a major role. Even if Gillislee is ready for the start of the year, Burkhead is worth grabbing as a RB5 in case injury or Bill Belichick's fickle nature puts him in a featured role.

Patriots | Dion Lewis, James White listed on first-team

Wed, 09 Aug 2017 11:20:21 -0700

New England Patriots RBs Dion Lewis and James White are ahead of Rex Burkhead and Mike Gillislee on the team's unofficial depth chart.

Fantasy Tip: Unofficial depth charts in early August before even one preseason game has been played are usually pretty meaningless, but Gillislee on the third team is notable, even if he has been sidelined for approximately a week due to a hamstring injury. Lewis and White have been with the team longer than Burkhead, which likely explains why they "rank" higher. Burkhead is still the player to target here if Gillislee can't get healthy soon. White is a RB3 in PPR, while Lewis is worthy of a bench spot in fantasy.

Patriots | Rex Burkhead getting work in short-yardage

Fri, 04 Aug 2017 09:35:04 -0700

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead was reportedly "chased by head coach Bill Belichick and Bill Belichick alone" and was signed in large part due to his versatility. So far in camp, the team hasn't been shy about trying him in short-yardage situations down at the goal line.

Fantasy Tip: Burkhead is the most versatile of the Patriots' top running backs and appears to be fighting Dion Lewis for the tweener role in the offense, meaning he will play when the team isn't using Mike Gillislee on early downs/short-yardage or James White on passing downs. The fact he can excel in both areas, however, probably makes him the top backup in every situation. Gillislee remains the favorite to be the best fantasy play, but that cannot be taken for granted. Burkhead needs to be drafted in virtually all leagues.

Patriots | D.J. Foster on the bubble?

Thu, 13 Jul 2017 19:37:38 -0700

New England Patriots RB D.J. Foster was effective catching the ball in spring practices, but Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com believes the offseason signings of RB Mike Gillislee and RB Rex Burkhead could make it tough for Foster to make the roster.

Patriots | Dion Lewis' roster spot likely safe

Sun, 28 May 2017 08:08:36 -0700

New England Patriots RB Dion Lewis still has a spot on the club despite the additions of Mike Gillislee and Rex Burkhead this offseason, likely as a kickoff returner and reserve running back who will play 15 to 20 snaps per game, per ESPN's Mike Reiss.

Fantasy Tip: Lewis showed off his trademark burst in OTAs per Reiss, who believes the team will "carefully manage" the injury-prone running back. James White is the favorite to remain the team's primary passing-down back, leaving Lewis' owners in a tough spot. Consider White a solid mid-round option in PPR leagues and Lewis more of a late-round gamble.

Patriots | Rex Burkhead terms

Wed, 15 Mar 2017 07:33:11 -0700

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead's one-year deal is worth $3.15 million. He receives a $1.1 million signing bonus, a $1.8 million salary and can earn $250,000 in per-game roster bonuses.

Fantasy Tip: Burkhead enters a crowded backfield with Dion Lewis and James White, and all three guys do a lot of similar things. Burkhead will be clearly behind those two, but he could be utilized in certain matchups. He's a late-round flier in fantasy.

Patriots | Rex Burkhead signs with Patriots

Tue, 14 Mar 2017 14:02:51 -0700

Free-agent RB Rex Burkhead (Bengals) signed an undisclosed deal with the New England Patriots Tuesday, March 14, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: The plethora of targets for Tom Brady continues to grow. The Patriots now have three capable pass-catching running backs in Dion Lewis, James White and Burkhead, among others. Of course, they will each lower each other's fantasy ceiling. Lewis and White are still the better bets for PPR leagues, but Burkhead is at least worth a late-round flier.

Falcons | Rex Burkhead meets with Atlanta

Sat, 11 Mar 2017 14:25:17 -0800

Free-agent RB Rex Burkhead (Bengals) met with the Atlanta Falcons Saturday, March 11, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Burkhead does not appear to be a great fit for the Falcons because they have Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman. Burkhead likely will be able to find a backup role with a team but should not be more than a No. 4 or 5 running back for fantasy owners.

Bengals | Rex Burkhead may not be back with CIN

Fri, 24 Feb 2017 15:08:15 -0800

Cincinnati Bengals impending free-agent RB Rex Burkhead probably will not re-sign with the Cincinnati Bengals unless he receives a bigger role in the offense, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Katherine Terrell.

Fantasy Tip: Burkhead finished the 2016 season with 119 rushing yards and two touchdowns in Week 17. He probably will receive interest from teams looking for a No. 2 running back in free agency and his fantasy value will depend on his team. He probably should be considered a No. 4 or No. 5 running back depending on his role.
