Dodgers | Alex Wood to return Monday

Thu, 26 May 2016 09:41:38 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Alex Wood (triceps) is expected to return and start against the Chicago Cubs Monday, May 30. He was scratched from his scheduled start Friday, May 27, with triceps soreness.

Fantasy Tip: It's a tough break for Wood, whose mechanical fixes recently have paid off in a big way. The lefty has allowed two earned runs or less in his last three starts and has struck out a whopping 27. After a minor injury, trusting him against a dangerous Cubs lineup is a sketchy proposition. You're probably better off skipping him this time around to be safe.

Dodgers | Julio Urias to make debut Friday

Thu, 26 May 2016 08:00:36 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Julio Urias will make his major league debut and start Friday, May 27, against the New York Mets. SP Alex Wood (triceps) was scratched from his start due to triceps tightness.

Fantasy Tip: The 19-year-old phenom has been filthy at Class AAA Oklahoma City at 4-1 with a 1.10 ERA, a 0.78 WHIP and 44 strikeouts in 41 innings. Urias may only be up for one start because Hyun-Jin Ryu is due back in a couple of rehab starts and because the team wants to limit Urias' workload. Urias could eventually be in the bullpen during the stretch run. Urias is expected to be a hot pickup universally, but he will probably have to set the world on fire to force the team's hand in keeping him in the rotation. He's worth snagging due to his potential, but bear in mind the pitfalls. If/when the team puts him in the bullpen, he could have solid value for ratios and K's.

Dodgers | Alex Wood made mechanical tweak

Tue, 24 May 2016 10:52:59 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Alex Wood discovered at the end of April that he was lifting his front leg slightly higher during his delivery, which disrupted his timing. He worked with pitching coach Rick Honeycutt to make an adjustment, and Wood has allowed 22 hits, five walks, 43 strikeouts and a 2.67 ERA in 30 1/3 innings over his last five starts.

Fantasy Tip: Wood's ERA is now down to 4.03 on the season, and he's fanning 9.6 hitters per nine innings after striking out a season-high 13 in his last outing against the Padres. If those in your league haven't caught on and he's still available, scoop Wood up immediately.

Dodgers | Alex Wood fans 13 Friars

Sun, 22 May 2016 03:15:52 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Alex Wood allowed two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out 13 batters during the Dodgers' 3-2 loss to the San Diego Padres Saturday, May 21.

Fantasy Tip: Wood has been extremely inconsistent from start to start, but he certainly showcased his fantasy ceiling Saturday, albeit against the underwhelming Padres. Still, he has allowed just four runs through 18 1/3 innings over his past three outings with 27 strikeouts, so the lefty might have kicked his early-season blues. He is worth a speculative grab in mixed leagues if you're looking for rotation help.

Cardinals | Yadier Molina out of Sunday lineup

Sun, 15 May 2016 14:59:51 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals C Yadier Molina is not starting Sunday, May 15, against the Los Angeles Dodgers. C Eric Fryer is batting eighth against Dodgers SP Alex Wood.

Fantasy Tip: Molina is out due to the left. vs. left matchup, so he gets the night off (or most of it, anyway). Fryer is a .538 hitter this season (7-for-13), so if you are looking for a low-cost flyer on your fantasy team he may not be bad. Fryer also isn't a bad option as a "handcuff" player in deeper leagues in case Molina gets hurt.

Cardinals | Jeremy Hazelbaker starting Sunday

Sun, 15 May 2016 14:51:45 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Jeremy Hazelbaker is starting Sunday, May 15, against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He will bat sixth against Dodgers SP Alex Wood.

Fantasy Tip: Hazelbaker is a .188 hitter over the past week, so he is showing some signs of cooling off following a hot start to the season. The majority of his starts come against right-handers, so to see him against Wood is a surprise. Still, Hazelbaker is .294-2-4 in 17 at-bats against the left, so he is a decent option for your lineup.

Cardinals | Aledmys Diaz batting fifth on Sunday

Sun, 15 May 2016 14:41:22 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SS Aledmys Diaz is hitting fifth Sunday, May 15, against the Los Angeles Dodgers and SP Alex Wood.

Fantasy Tip: Diaz is traditionally a No. 8 or 9 hitter, but he has torn up the National League in terms of his bat. Diaz has cooled off in the past week, if you call .308/.321/.577 coming back to earth. Diaz has done a decent job at the plate and solidified the middle infield with a .365-5-14 performance in the last month, and he belongs in all fantasy formats.

Cardinals | Brandon Moss not in Sunday lineup

Sun, 15 May 2016 14:29:19 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 1B Brandon Moss is not in the lineup Sunday, May 15, against the Los Angeles Dodgers. OF Matt Holliday is at first base for the game and will bat third against Dodgers SP Alex Wood.

Fantasy Tip: Moss is on the bench because of the lefty vs. lefty matchup, so don't be surprised if he pinch-hits once Wood is out of the game. Holliday is hitting very well, with a .300 batting average, three homers and five runs batted in over the past week. Needless to say, he should be in any fantasy format.

Dodgers | Alex Wood roughed up on road

Wed, 04 May 2016 20:53:02 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Alex Wood allowed five runs - four earned - and six hits over five innings in a loss Wednesday, May 4, against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Fantasy Tip: We told you about Wood's drastic home-road splits earlier, and it didn't get much better after this one. He has a 1.29 ERA in two starts at Chavez Ravine, and 0-3 with a 8.05 ERA in four road assignments. Needless to say, start him in NL-only fantasy play and DFS at home, reserve him for road trips until he gets untracked away from SoCal.

Dodgers | Alex Wood has drastic home-road splits

Wed, 04 May 2016 17:55:01 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Alex Wood has a 1.29 ERA through his two home starts and a 8.53 ERA through his four road starts this season.

Fantasy Tip: At this point, Wood is a difficult arm to trust, but he might be worth a flier start next time he takes the hill at Dodger Stadium. However, in the majority of seasonal leagues, it is time to move on from the reeling lefty. At this point, Wood's 5.18 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 28 strikeouts through 33 innings aren't paying the fantasy bills in any format.
