Browns | Johnny Manziel shows up early

Wed, 17 Dec 2014 10:10:36 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel arrived more than five hours early to practice Wednesday, Dec. 17, after struggling in his first NFL start in Week 15. Manziel was 10-for-18 for 80 yards and two interceptions against the Cincinnati Bengals last week.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel ($3,900) remains cheap at FantasyScore, but following his disaster last week, it's hard to put too much trust in the young quarterback as he takes his lumps in the NFL. The Carolina Panthers defense has been a good matchup for most teams all year, but it won't make starting Manziel in daily games much more appealing this week.

Browns | Johnny Manziel prevented from scrambling left

Mon, 15 Dec 2014 13:42:21 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel was held to just 107 yards of total offense in the Week 15 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. Bengals defensive coordinator watched game tape of Manziel's two college losses to Louisiana State and Missouri in order to game plan for him. "Those were his worst two games in college," Guenther said. "You could see obviously what their plan was -- to keep him in the pocket or to move him to a side where he wasn't throwing." The Bengals prevented Manziel from going to his left.

Fantasy Tip: Will this be something the Carolina Panthers defense looks to do in Week 16? It could be, but it's hard to envision Manziel regressing from his performance in his first start. He remains a risky option at FantasyScore, but his floor should be more palatable against the Panthers.

Browns | Johnny Manziel to start Week 16

Sun, 14 Dec 2014 14:08:11 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel will start in Week 16 against the Carolina Panthers, head coach Mike Pettine confirmed Sunday, Dec. 14.

Fantasy Tip: Despite Sunday's disaster, the team committed to Manziel after benching Brian Hoyer after last week's game, so there is no turning back now. FantasyScore owners will not want to make the same mistake and should avoid using him.

Browns | Johnny Manziel does nothing

Sun, 14 Dec 2014 14:05:32 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel completed 10 of his 18 pass attempts for just 80 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions in the Week 15 shutout loss against the Cincinnati Bengals. He was also sacked three times and ended up with a passer rating of just 27.3.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel was a complete disaster for anyone who risked using him in the fantasy playoffs in seasonal leagues or were tempted by his low salary in FantasyScore. Perhaps this is why the Browns waited so long to give him his chance.

Browns | Johnny Manziel to start in Week 15

Tue, 09 Dec 2014 09:41:28 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel will be the starting quarterback in Week 15 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel clearly has much more upside than Brian Hoyer. Manziel is an exciting but risky fantasy football play in Week 15 against the Cincinnati Bengals, who have done a good job in limiting opposing quarterbacks all season, despite a hiccup against the Pittsburgh Steelers last weekend. He'll be on the cheap side at FantasyScore, but it'll come with plenty of risk as your signal caller.

Browns | Johnny Manziel likely to start

Tue, 09 Dec 2014 05:45:07 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel is likely to start in Week 15, according to indications from sources. All that remains is waiting for head coach Mike Pettine to announce it.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel ($4,300; 8.6% of your cap) would be an intriguing play against the Cincinnati Bengals on FantasyScore. There are a lot more proven options to use, though.

Browns | Johnny Manziel to start soon?

Mon, 08 Dec 2014 14:51:05 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel could be taking over as starting quarterback in the near future. "I think it's natural to lean the other way, given the results," head coach Mike Pettine said Monday, Dec. 8. Pettine said he, the coaches and general manager Ray Farmer would meet Monday night and make a decision.

Fantasy Tip: If Manziel were to start, he'd have more fantasy value than Hoyer because of his running ability. However, Manziel is still a rookie and has only thrown nine passes this year. The training wheels are still on and starting him against one of the league's better pass defenses in the Cincinnati Bengals may not be a wise choice.

Browns | Johnny Manziel could start final three games

Wed, 03 Dec 2014 09:23:21 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel could start the team's final three games if the team were to lose in Week 14 with QB Brian Hoyer as the starter, according to a source. Manziel was 5-for-8 for 63 yards and a 10-yard touchdown scamper when he relieved Hoyer in Week 13. Hoyer has one touchdown and six interceptions in his last 15 quarters.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel has much more fantasy football upside than Hoyer, but those at FantasyScore will have to wait at least another week before considering Johnny Football. Hoyer ($4,100) isn't a very attractive option for daily lineups against the Indianapolis Colts, especially since there's a chance Manziel could relieve him again if he struggles.

Browns | Brian Hoyer to remain starter

Wed, 03 Dec 2014 08:36:19 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer will start instead of QB Johnny Manziel in the team's Week 14 game.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer has a nice FantasyScore price of $4,100 this week, but there are probably better options available to you by spending just a bit more at the position.

Browns | Starting QB still uncertain for Browns

Mon, 01 Dec 2014 13:36:30 -0800

Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine said he's not ready to make a decision on QBs Johnny Manziel or Brian Hoyer as the team's starting quarterback going forward.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel would provide more upside with his ability to run and could be worth a start if reasonably priced on FantasyScore. Hoyer is probably worth staying away from at this point, however.

Browns | Browns QB decision coming Wednesday

Mon, 01 Dec 2014 09:50:41 -0800

Cleveland Browns QBs Johnny Manziel and Brian Hoyer are in the dark as to who will start against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 14, but head coach Mike Pettine said the team will make a decision on this weekend's starter Wednesday, Dec. 3. "The door is definitely open for a change at the quarterback position," Pettine said. "It's not like we're just going to go back to Brian (Hoyer). This has been a cumulative thing where discussions about a change at quarterback have been more and more lively. We'll evaluate both quarterbacks and have a decision soon."

Fantasy Tip: We find it hard to believe that Cleveland will go back to Hoyer at this point, and Manziel offers much more upside for fantasy football purposes. If Manziel starts, he'll be a high-risk, high-reward play at FantasyScore for likely a pretty cheap salary.

Browns | Johnny Manziel leads TD drive

Sun, 30 Nov 2014 14:54:51 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel came on in the fourth quarter of the Week 13 game against the Buffalo Bills for the ineffective QB Brian Hoyer. Manziel put together a quick 80-yard touchdown drive, scoring the touchdown himself on a 10-yard run with nobody open.

Fantasy Tip: It is uncertain if Manziel will take over as the starter in Week 14, but he would face a mediocre Indianapolis Colts pass defense if he does get the nod. FantasyScore owners might find him to be a solid value.

Browns | Johnny Manziel enters game

Sun, 30 Nov 2014 12:41:17 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel has entered the team's Week 13 game after the Browns benched QB Brian Hoyer.

Fantasy Tip: It is not known if Manziel will keep the job or if it is a temporary move by the team. If Manziel is named the starting quarterback, he probably is not a good fantasy option for the rest of the season since owners likely will better options available.

Browns | More on Johnny Manziel incident

Wed, 26 Nov 2014 09:41:46 -0800

Updating a previous report, Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel will not see his playing time changed because of an off the field altercation, according to head coach Mike Pettine. "Unless something unforeseen comes up, just given what I know, it would not have an impact on any decision to play him," Pettine said.

Browns | Browns didn't consider benching Brian Hoyer

Tue, 25 Nov 2014 10:36:49 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer was never in danger of being benched in favor of QB Johnny Manziel in the team's Week 12 win over the Atlanta Falcons, according to head coach Mike Pettine. Hoyer threw three interceptions in the game. Pettine praised Hoyer for shaking off his mistakes and leading the team to a game-winning drive.

Fantasy Tip: That's good news for those Hoyer owners out there. However, Hoyer ($4,700) is tough to rely on at FantasyScore because of his low ceiling. He makes for a pretty bad option in Week 13, too, against the Buffalo Bills, who have allowed just 13.70 fantasy points per game to QBs all season.

Browns | GM sees Johnny Manziel as long-term QB

Wed, 05 Nov 2014 11:16:23 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel still appears to be the team's long-term answer at quarterback, according to general manager Ray Farmer. "The result is for him to be successful for a long period of time and not just for a moment or for a flash, but for an extended period of time," Farmer said. "We're going to put together the right group, and we're going to make sure everything is in place. He's going to be ready, and we're going to be ready when he does get that opportunity."

Browns | Johnny Manziel not frustrated

Fri, 31 Oct 2014 16:29:23 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel disagreed with head coach Mike Pettine's notion that he is frustrated and believes he is on the right track. "I feel like I'm in the role that I need to be at this time," Manziel said. "And, for me, obviously, I wasn't where I needed to be throughout the earlier stages of being here, and now is my time to play catchup and make sure I'm on top of my things, continuing to get better and what's up to my level and also the coaches' level of where I need to perform."

Browns | Johnny Manziel could play in Week 8

Tue, 21 Oct 2014 11:05:31 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel could see some action in Week 8 against the Oakland Raiders, according to head coach Mike Pettine. However, Pettine said Monday, Oct. 20, that QB Brian Hoyer is still firmly entrenched as the team's starting quarterback. Hoyer completed a career-low 39 percent of his attempts against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 7 and threw for 215 yards with no touchdowns and an interception. He has completed only 41.3 percent of his passes in the last two weeks. Pettine blamed Hoyer's poor performance on the team's inability to run and set up play-action.

Fantasy Tip: The Browns face a great matchup in the Raiders this weekend. It's a perfect chance for Hoyer to bounce back from his previous rough outings, but if he doesn't, there's probably a good chance that Manziel is starting in Week 9.

Browns | Johnny Manziel ready when needed

Fri, 17 Oct 2014 13:26:46 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel said he is feeling more comfortable with the offense and will be ready to play when needed. "I feel a lot more confident and a lot more comfortable," Manziel said. "The whole process of being under center a lot more, everything that's involved in this offense, that just wasn't anything that I was asked to do at (Texas) A&M. I knew it would take some time."

Wed, 15 Oct 2014 14:09:40 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer disputed a report that he would not re-sign with the team if QB Johnny Manziel was still with the team. "It couldn't be further from the truth," Hoyer said. "There's no accurate information. I've never talked to that guy in my life. From here on out, my main focus is Jacksonville. You guys want to talk about that, you can talk to the guys upstairs or my agent, Joe Linta. I think some of you know. From here on out, I'm on to Jacksonville."

Browns | Johnny Manziel usage

Thu, 18 Sep 2014 16:31:44 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel's playing time is decided during the game, according to offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. Shanahan said using Manziel makes the defense have to think more about what the offense is capable of doing. Furthermore, whether Manziel plays or not depends on the defensive fronts and coverages the team is facing, Shanahan added.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel still isn't worth starting in any format.

Browns | No package for Johnny Manziel

Sun, 14 Sep 2014 09:27:02 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel does not have a special offensive package in the game plan for Week 2, and would run the normal offense if he sees playing time, according to offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan.

Fantasy Tip: There is no guarantee that Manziel will receive playing time this week, so owners in all leagues should avoid him.

Browns | Johnny Manziel unlikely to be used

Thu, 11 Sep 2014 16:16:38 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel will "probably not" be used in Week 2 against the New Orleans Saints unless QB Brian Hoyer is injured, according to offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. Shanahan also reiterated that Manziel is not a wildcat quarterback, and any plays he would run would come from the regular offensive game plan.

Fantasy Tip: It's a no-brainer: Manziel should not be used in standard or FantasyScore lineups in Week 2.

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel could receive some playing time Week 2, according to head coach Mike Pettine. The team has a special package for Manziel in their offense.

Sun, 07 Sep 2014 23:55:54 -0700

Cleveland Browns coach Mike Pettine gave an in-game vote of confidence to Browns QB Brian Hoyer when he told the media following the game that inserting QB Johnny Manziel was never an option. The Browns trailed the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-3 at halftime but nearly upset the Steelers thanks to a strong second half. Pittsburgh won 30-27 in overtime.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer will have to throw a lot to keep up with the Saints next week. He's a mid-to-low QB2 option on FantasyScore.

Browns | Johnny Manziel might see some action

Sun, 07 Sep 2014 09:23:49 -0700

Cleveland Browns rookie QB Johnny Manziel could see some action in Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but it will come down to a "feel thing" per the coaching staff. Head coach Mike Pettine said Manziel has a package of plays specific for him and Manziel has prepared this week to play. Pettine said Manziel and QB Brian Hoyer will not be alternating series.

Fantasy Tip: Even at $4,500 in FantasyScore, Manziel should not be a consideration when building out your fantasy football team for Week 1. Hoyer, at $5,000 salary, isn't a better option, either. Stay away from this situation until it plays out and gives you plenty of reasons to consider it.

It won't be alternating series, it'll be a 'feel' thing," Pettine said.

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel is expected to play in the regular season debut in Week 1, at least that's what defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau is planning. "I'll be very surprised if we don't see him," LeBeau said Friday, Sept. 5. "He was one of the top football players in the nation. You look at his offensive numbers. It's not a magic wand he waves out there. He's creating situations, making plays. They're going to want to bring him along and give him some game action. I'm sure of that."

Browns | No quick hook for Brian Hoyer

Wed, 03 Sep 2014 13:11:21 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer won't receive a quick hook in the team's Week 1 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers in favor of QB Johnny Manziel, according to head coach Mike Pettine. However, Hoyer understands that he'll need to produce to hold off a quarterback change during the year.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer is a low-end QB2 in standard leagues. He's a cheap option in daily games for Week 1, but his matchup against a tough division opponent isn't attractive with limited weapons at his disposal.

Browns | Johnny Manziel earning snaps?

Fri, 29 Aug 2014 11:12:45 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel showed a strong effort in the team's final preseason game against the Chicago Bears Thursday, Aug. 28, leading head coach Mike Pettine to acknowledge that the team will consider giving Manziel repetitions Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. "It's something we'll discuss," said Pettine. "I don't know if that's necessarily something just because of tonight. We'll have discussions on how we want to game plan and how we want to use those guys." Manziel produced two field goals and a touchdown in his five possessions Thursday, including a 1-yard touchdown pass. He went 6-for-17 for 83 yards and the touchdown for a 71.4 rating, but some of his passes came out wobbly. Manziel also ran for 55 yards on four carries, including a long run of 22 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel can be electric, but he'll surely go through growing pains this year if he sees extended playing time eventually. He's a fine investment in keeper and dynasty leagues, but he shouldn't be anything more than a QB3 in yearly formats.

Browns | Two-quarterback system?

Tue, 26 Aug 2014 18:47:57 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer will open the year as the starter, but when asked about installing a package of plays for QB Johnny Manziel, head coach Mike Pettine said that it is tough for a defensive coordinator to prepare for two quarterbacks.

Fantasy Tip: Pettine talked about putting in a package of plays for Manziel after naming Hoyer the Week 1 starter, and his response seems to indicate that he is still planning on doing so. While Manziel won't be able to make a worthwhile fantasy impact with just a handful of plays, the bigger takeaway is that Manziel will likely have a chance to start sooner rather than later. He running ability gives him the potential to pile up fantasy points, making him worth a late-round stash in drafts.

Pettine said a package for Manziel is on the table. Pettine said he didn't anticipate a platoon early in the season. Pettine also made it clear that Hoyer is on a week-to-week trial.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer is a mid-to-low QB2, and it sounds like he must perform extremely well to hold off Manziel. Manziel is a mid-to-low QB2 with upside.

Browns | Brian Hoyer named starter

Wed, 20 Aug 2014 05:42:33 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer has been named the starting quarterback over QB Johnny Manziel. Head coach Mike Pettine wrote the announcement in an e-mail and said Manziel made great strides, but Hoyer had a decided edge.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer is a mid-to-low QB2 in fantasy leagues. Manziel should only be drafted in dynasty leagues. If you're in a deeper single-year league, target him as a low QB2. In most mixed leagues, you can probably score him on waivers during the season if you choose to do so.

Tue, 19 Aug 2014 18:53:40 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel's obscene gesture will play a factor in the competition for the starting quarterback job, according to head coach Mike Pettine.

Fantasy Tip: Although Manziel's antics could cost him a shot at starting in Week 1, he is still the Cleveland quarterback worth drafting, albeit as a QB2. It is only a matter of time before he is given a chance to start, and his ability to run the ball gives him fantasy potential that Brian Hoyer simply doesn't have.

Browns | Brian Hoyer, Johnny Manziel struggle

Mon, 18 Aug 2014 20:54:52 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer completed two of his six pass attempts for 16 yards during the team's preseason game Monday, Aug. 18, and QB Johnny Manziel completed seven of his 16 passes for 65 yards and a touchdown. Manziel was also sacked three times and gave the middle finger to the Washington Redskins' bench.

Fantasy Tip: The starting QB situation in Cleveland really isn't much clearer after this game. From a fantasy standpoint, Manziel has a much higher ceiling thanks to his ability to gain yards on the ground, and he is worth adding as a QB2, even if he doesn't open the year as the starter.

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel said he doesn't feel ready for the team's regular season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Manziel added he can get ready, though, as it's only the second week of the preseason.

Fantasy Tip: It's understandable if a rookie quarterback doesn't feel ready after one preseason game. Still, we don't even know who will start against the Steelers yet. Manziel does have more upside from a fantasy perspective.

Browns | Johnny Manziel making strides

Fri, 15 Aug 2014 15:06:31 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel worked with the first-team offense in 9-on-9 and 11-on-11 drills in practice Friday, Aug. 15, and looked better going through his progressions. Head coach Mike Pettine said the team has left all of their options on the table when determining who the starting quarterback would be going into Week 1.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel has closed the gap between he and Brian Hoyer for the starting gig heading into Week 1. The team's next preseason game will likely determine the winner, and Hoyer probably still has the slight edge. Manziel could be starting early in the season if he loses the battle and Hoyer struggles early on. It's wise to ignore both options as your backup QB.
