NFL | Johnny Manziel says 'he'll be back'

Tue, 19 Jul 2016 09:20:50 -0700

Free-agent QB Johnny Manziel told his fans on social media that he will "be back." Manziel told The Washington Post last weekend that he's "actually doing well." "I have good friends around me supporting what I do and I try to support them in what they want to do. I'm not saying I'm never drinking again, but for now just mostly being healthy. I've got a killer gym in my house and I can spend time working out. I'm interested in doing a lot of different things in my life -- including football -- but, right now, I'm just exploring options and waiting to see what the future holds."

Fantasy Tip: Manziel will serve a four-game suspension if a team takes a shot on him and could face further suspension. His off-field antics have likely turned all prospective teams off, meaning it's highly unlikely Manziel ever makes noise in the NFL again. He should be completely off the fantasy radar for now.

NFL | AFL an option for Johnny Manziel?

Tue, 05 Jul 2016 09:57:38 -0700

Free-agent QB Johnny Manziel (Browns) is drawing interest from the Arena Football League. "We could provide a strong platform for him to demonstrate that he is back," AFL commissioner Scott Butera said. "We would also work with him and provide him whatever help he needed to live a healthy life."

Fantasy Tip: A four-game suspension in the NFL only increases the chances that Manziel won't be given another shot. That means the AFL might be his best chance to demonstrate that he is cleaning up his act off the field. Either way, Manziel has zero fantasy appeal heading into the 2016 season.

Free-agent QB Johnny Manziel (Browns) has been telling people privately that 2017 may be the best chance for him to play in the NFL again.

Free-agent QB Johnny Manziel (Browns) has made it a goal to go sober starting Friday, July 1, and commence training for an NFL return.

Tue, 26 Apr 2016 09:59:03 -0700

Free-agent QB Johnny Manziel (Browns) will plead not guilty after he was indicted by a Texas grand jury Tuesday, April 26, on an assault charge after his ex-girlfriend accused Manziel of domestic violence. The Class A misdemeanor carries up to a year in jail and a $4,000 fine.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel faces an uphill battle to land with another team in time for the 2016 season. He should carry zero fantasy value in drafts this fall, even if he's picked up by a club.

NFL | Johnny Manziel indicted by grand jury

Mon, 25 Apr 2016 04:57:47 -0700

Former Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel has been indicted by a Dallas County Grand Jury on a misdemeanor assault with bodily injury charge, according to sources in the Dallas County District Attorney office.

Fantasy Tip: This further decreases the likelihood Manziel will get to play meaningful games in 2016, especially with a pending criminal case. Depending on how this case goes, however, there is still a chance Manziel could land somewhere, but the negative PR alone could make it difficult.

NFL | Johnny Manziel hopes to play in 2016

Tue, 19 Apr 2016 19:30:17 -0700

Free-agent QB Johnny Manziel (Browns) said Tuesday, April 19, that he is still focusing on preparing to be in the National Football League in 2016. "I'm hoping to take care of the issues in front of me right now so I can focus on what I have to do if I want to play in 2016," Manziel said.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel was dropped by agent Drew Rosenhaus, and it is hard to see any organization taking a chance on the embattled quarterback right now. Should he be afforded another chance he is not expected to have much, if any, fantasy impact.

Fri, 15 Apr 2016 18:26:23 -0700

Free-agent QB Johnny Manziel's (Browns) agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said he doesn't expect Manziel to seek the treatment necessary for Rosenhaus to continue to represent him.

Fantasy Tip: You know it's bad when a player's agent won't even offer support. Manziel is throwing away one chance after the next, and he is unlikely to have any fantasy value in 2016.

NFL | Johnny Manziel accused of property damage

Fri, 15 Apr 2016 09:34:51 -0700

Free-agent QB Johnny Manziel (Browns) is accused of hosting parties at a Los Angeles home earlier this month that caused extensive property damage, according to a letter from an attorney representing the owner of the property. ESPN obtained the letter Friday from attorney Niki Ghazian, who wrote that "evidence suggests" that Manziel and his friends "were consuming drugs and alcohol." Her client is seeking $31,580, including $19,580 in damage and replacement fees.

Fantasy Tip: The news that continues to filter out about Manziel's issues off the field are concerning. He's unlikely to be a factor in fantasy in the 2016 season but could resurface eventually.

NFL | Johnny Manziel's agent fed up

Wed, 13 Apr 2016 16:53:46 -0700

Free-agent QB Johnny Manziel's (Browns) agent, Drew Rosenhaus, has told Manziel that he needs to get treatment or Rosenhaus will cease representing the embattled quarterback. Rosenhaus has terminated his standard representation with Manziel, but said there is a five-day window for him to rescind that decision.

Fantasy Tip: There is definitely merit to Rosenhaus's frustration. Manziel has not made the most of his opportunities, resulting in his release earlier this offseason. He can be kept on waivers in seasonal leagues until further notice.

NFL | Johnny Manziel moves in with Von Miller

Mon, 11 Apr 2016 09:33:19 -0700

Free-agent QB Johnny Manziel (Browns) said he has moved in with Denver Broncos LB Von Miller in an attempt to get back into the NFL. "If I had to make my decision on it, he would already be on the Broncos," Miller said. "But we've got guys in the front office that make those decisions, and they put us in championships with those decisions." Miller and Manziel both went to Texas A and M in college, and head coach Gary Kubiak also played quarterback there.

Fantasy Tip: While the Broncos had some discussions with Manziel about possibly adding him to their roster, nothing appears imminent as Denver looks to add to their quarterback depth chart of Mark Sanchez and Trevor Siemian. Even if Manziel were to sign with Denver, he wouldn't appeal to many fantasy owners in 2016.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel isn't expected to be in the fantasy picture in 2016.

NFL | Johnny Manziel could be disciplined

Wed, 23 Mar 2016 10:31:12 -0700

Free-agent QB Johnny Manziel (Browns) could still be disciplined for assaulting his ex-girlfriend in January, according to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. "Those investigations have been ongoing," Goodell said, noting that the league has yet to come to a satisfactory conclusion on the matter.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel may be on the radar of some teams this offseason, but his off-field problems and possible suspension might scare any suitors away. Manziel shouldn't be on anyone's fantasy radar heading into 2016.

NFL | Johnny Manziel speaking to teams

Mon, 21 Mar 2016 16:44:12 -0700

Free-agent QB Johnny Manziel (Browns) and his new agent, Drew Rosenhaus, are talking privately with teams. Rosenhaus isn't commented publicly until he has more time to develop a relationship with his new client. Rosenhaus said teams are interested in Manziel, but he didn't specify which ones.

Fantasy Tip: Whichever teams are looking at Manziel aren't looking at him in a starting role, that much can be said. It still remains to be seen if any club will actually take a chance on Johnny Football after all of his off-field problems this past season. He should be nowhere near the radar of any fantasy owners in 2016.

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel has hired Drew Rosenhaus as his agent Saturday, March 19.

NFL | No teams expected to pick up Johnny Manziel

Fri, 11 Mar 2016 09:00:13 -0800

No NFL teams are expected to pick up the contract of free-agent QB Johnny Manziel (Browns). Of Manziel's $8.245 million over four years with the Cleveland Browns, $7.7 million was fully guaranteed.

Fantasy Tip: A QB-needy club could eventually kick the tires on Manziel, but after all the off-field damage he's done in the past year, there's also the possibility that Manziel has played his last down in the NFL. He shouldn't be on anyone's fantasy radar.

Browns | Johnny Manziel could be traded

Thu, 10 Mar 2016 12:29:03 -0800

The Cleveland Browns have yet to release QB Johnny Manziel because there is some trade interest from unknown teams.

Fantasy Tip: It's hard to fathom that any teams would be willing to trade for Manziel after all the off-field trouble he's gotten into this past year. But if it does happen, Manziel probably wouldn't be anything more than a weak fantasy backup.

Wed, 09 Mar 2016 15:52:00 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel was not released Wednesday, March 9, but he's expected to be cut later this week.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel won't have many suitors after all of the off-field incidents he's had this past year with Cleveland. He should be firmly off all fantasy radars entering the 2016 season.

Browns | Johnny Manziel case to grand jury

Thu, 25 Feb 2016 15:27:08 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel's domestic violence case is heading to a grand jury to determine if Manziel will be indicted for a class A misdemeanor assault. The Dallas Police Department said they are through with their investigation and it will not release any further details of the investigation while it is pending grand jury presentation.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel's troublesome offseason isn't going away any time soon, and he'll probably be released early next month, too. He has shown glimpses of being able to succeed at the NFL level, but his off-field issues have almost completely engulfed his talent so far. Stay away from him in next year's fantasy drafts.

Browns | Johnny Manziel decision coming soon

Wed, 24 Feb 2016 10:58:48 -0800

Cleveland Browns new head coach Hue Jackson said he the club will make a decision on QB Johnny Manziel soon. Jackson didn't say directly the team would cut Manziel, but the Browns intend to take a stand and show that Manziel's behavior won't be tolerated. Cleveland can't release Manziel until the new league year starts March 9 for salary cap reasons.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel is likely to be cut by the Browns after his domestic violence incident last month. Whether another team takes a chance on him as a backup quarterback remains to be seen. But after all off his off-field incidents, Manziel has quickly fallen off the fantasy map.

Browns | Johnny Manziel still not charged

Sat, 20 Feb 2016 10:18:44 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel has still not been charged or arrested for allegedly assaulting and threatening his ex-girlfriend.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel's future status remains in limbo from a legal standpoint, but he is expected to be released early next month by the Browns anyway. It's hard to believe that any team would be willing to take a chance on a troubled backup quarterback. Manziel is a fantasy afterthought.

Browns | Cleveland likely to draft quarterback?

Thu, 11 Feb 2016 15:28:03 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown is the starting quarterback for the Browns as of now. QB Johnny Manziel will be on his way out next month, too, which causes Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer to believe the Browns will take a quarterback with their No. 2 overall pick, namely California QB Jared Goff or North Dakota State QB Carson Wentz.

Fantasy Tip: No one's finger presses harder on the pulse of the Browns than Cabot's. McCown is a supbar veteran quarterback whose NFL career may be done in the near future, and Manziel has proven time and again that he's not the answer for the future. If Cleveland doesn't sign a bona fide free-agent quarterback, it's hard to imagine the Browns using their No. 2 pick on another position.

Browns | Cleveland refutes Manziel story

Tue, 09 Feb 2016 11:56:27 -0800

Updating a previous report, Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel was allegedly drunk at a practice last season and the Browns allegedly covered it up by saying he had a concussion. The Browns are denying the report. A Browns spokesman said Johnny Manziel came to the team facility on the morning of December 30 and complained of concussion symptoms. The spokesman also said that Manziel was tested by an independent neurologist and entered the NFL's concussion protocol. He then remained in the protocol until January 12 after being cleared by the neurologist.

Fantasy Tip: It's been quite the career already for Johnny Manziel already, unfortunately mostly because of his off-field goings-on. Manziel is expected to be released by the Browns early next month.

Browns | Johnny Manziel facing criminal investigation

Mon, 08 Feb 2016 16:14:56 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel's ex-girlfriend issued an affidavit that said Manziel hit her so hard during a late-night confrontation that she lost hearing in one ear. Colleen Crowley suffered a ruptured eardrum, which is expected to heal eventually. She is seeking to obtain a protective order against Manziel. Manziel is currently under criminal investigation on allegations of domestic violence.

"Fearful for my life, I hit (Manziel) several times, hoping I could back out of the car," she said in the affidavit, adding Manziel "threw me off of him and I hit my head on the car window and I fell into the passenger floorboard."

Fantasy Tip: Manziel's career is wobbly right now, at best. The Browns are expected to release him in March, and no teams are likely to be willing to take a chance on him amid this controversy and a possible suspension from the league. Manziel doesn't have any fantasy value at the moment.

Browns | Cleveland unable to reach Johnny Manziel

Fri, 05 Feb 2016 13:45:38 -0800

Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam has been unable to reach QB Johnny Manziel in the wake of his off-field incident last weekend in which his ex-girlfriend claimed that he hit her several times and appeared to be on drugs. "We're not worried about Johnny Manziel the football player, we're worried about Johnny Manziel the person, and I think that's all we need to say on the issue," Haslam said. Haslam "appeared frustrated" and "emotional." Manziel will not face charges for the incident.

Fantasy Tip: The Browns are fully prepared to release Manziel next month amid his off-field problems, and given the latest development last weekend with his ex-girlfriend, not many NFL teams are likely to want to take a chance on him. There's a chance Manziel never plays in the NFL again. His fantasy value takes a back seat to his personal health and well-being.

Paul Manziel said he's worried about his son's well being. "I truly believe if they can't get him help, he won't live to see his 24th birthday," Manziel said.

Thu, 04 Feb 2016 17:02:42 -0800

Updating a previous report, Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel will not be charged for an incident involving his ex-girlfriend last weekend. The investigation is closed.

Fantasy Tip: This is somewhat of a mysterious result considering the alleged account detailed by Manziel's ex-girlfriend earlier, but it's good news for Manziel, for now. He's likely still facing a release by the Browns in early March, though, so continue to keep him off your fantasy radar.

Browns | Plot thickens for Johnny Manziel

Thu, 04 Feb 2016 15:43:26 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel allegedly struck his ex-girlfriend, Colleen Crowley, several times Saturday, Jan. 30. Crowley said she believed Manziel may have been on drugs or having a psychotic breakdown at the time of the incident.

Fantasy Tip: Much has been made of Manziel's off-field antics throughout his young career. This latest episode may be the nail in the coffin for Manziel's future in Cleveland, and possibly his future in the NFL. You can disregard him for the foreseeable future.

Browns | Trades for Johnny Manziel unlikely

Tue, 02 Feb 2016 14:02:34 -0800

Updating a previous report, Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel will be cut March 9, according to a source, as reported earlier. The Browns will entertain any late-round trade offers for Manziel, but they don't expect that to transpire, especially after Manziel's off-field antics.

Fantasy Tip: It shouldn't be a big surprise if nobody courts Manziel prior to his inevitable release. He's just too big of a risky right now, and he probably wouldn't even start if someone did sign him. Keep him on your league's waivers.

Cowboys | Dallas unlikely to sign Johnny Manziel

Tue, 02 Feb 2016 13:43:07 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel is unlikely to sign with the Dallas Cowboys if he is released by the Browns, according to ESPNDallas.com's Todd Archer. Archer said the Cowboys need a reliable backup quarterback, and that it's hard to imagine Dallas signing Manziel for such a need.

Fantasy Tip: The Cowboys have been the team most heavily rumored to possibly sign Manziel if/when the Browns let him go. Manziel's off-field problems could be a big hindrance in him signing with another team. Again, as of now, he has not fantasy value.

Browns | Teams interested in Johnny Manziel

Tue, 02 Feb 2016 11:21:39 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel said three teams have shown interest in him: the Los Angeles Rams, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Dallas Cowboys. The Rams were interested in Manziel during the NFL Draft and the Chiefs apparently have no interest in him now. Manziel and the Cowboys have been rumored for a while, and Dallas may be Manziel's best bet if he is indeed released by the Browns.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel probably won't start if he is released and subsequently signed, which would give him no fantasy value. He would likely wait in the wings for his chance to start, but he won't be on the fantasy radar any time soon.

Browns | Johnny Manziel likely gone in March

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel will be released after the new league year begins March 9, according to a source. Releasing Manziel this month would count $4.6 million against the salary cap. The Browns released a statement from new director of football operations Sashi Brown Tuesday, Feb. 2, that expressed disappointment in Manziel for his latest off-field incident, but stopped short of saying his run in Cleveland is over.
"We've been clear about expectations for our players on and off the field. Johnny's continual involvement in incidents that run counter to those expectations undermines the hard work of his teammates and the reputation of our organization," he said. "His status with our team will be addressed when permitted by league rules. We will have no further comment at this time."

Fantasy Tip: Manziel has no fantasy value right now, but he'll likely latch on with another team. If he has a chance to earn a starting job, he's worth watching in fantasy.

Browns | Johnny Manziel investigation ongoing

Mon, 01 Feb 2016 12:28:17 -0800

Updating a previous report, Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel is still being investigated for a possible assault of an ex-girlfriend Saturday, Jan. 30. The investigation is ongoing, and it is the second time in as many months that the NFL has investigated Manziel for a domestic incident.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel's future in Cleveland wasn't looking bright anyway, but if he is convicted in this incident then that will probably be the nail in the coffin. If Manziel is eventually let go, these off-field occurrences may hinder prospective teams from pursuing the embattled quarterback. His status will need to be monitored over the next few weeks and throughout the offseason, but he's nowhere near starting fantasy quarterback material right now.
