Mets | Wilmer Flores likely to play 3B

Fri, 03 Jun 2016 07:25:08 -0700

New York Mets SS Wilmer Flores will likely be the primary starter at third base with 3B David Wright (neck) headed to the disabled list, at least in the short term. The Mets are avoiding moving 2B Neil Walker to the hot corner and calling up 2B Dilson Herrera from Class AAA Las Vegas.

Fantasy Tip: Flores is batting just .167 with one home run and two RBI in 60 at-bats for the Mets this year, but he does have notable pop in his lumber for a player that typically qualifies as a middle infielder. Moving around the infield will only boost his fantasy value in deep mixed and NL-only leagues.

Mets | Dominic Smith not an option

Mon, 23 May 2016 16:47:42 -0700

New York Mets 1B Dominic Smith, the team's first-round pick in 2013, is not a candidate to be promoted to the major leagues with 1B Lucas Duda (back) injured, according to manager Terry Collins. Smith is only 20 years old and has less than two months of experience at Class AA. 2B Dilson Herrera was also considered for a call-up, but shifting 2B Neil Walker to first base wasn't an option.

Fantasy Tip: Smith should be watched in dynasty and keeper formats for the time being. Smith is hitting .272 (44-for-162) with four home runs and 31 RBI for Class AA Binghamton this year.

Mets | Ruben Tejada could be traded

Mon, 29 Feb 2016 13:31:04 -0800

New York Mets SS Ruben Tejada will likely serve as a backup middle infielder when camp ends, but there remains a chance he could be traded or released before Opening Day, according to team officials. He's set to make $3 million in 2016 in the final year of his deal. If they cut him more than 15 days before the season opener, they'd only be responsible for one-sixth of his salary. 3B Matt Reynolds or 2B Dilson Herrera would have to impress this spring in order for Tejada to be cut or traded.

Fantasy Tip: Tejada looks to be fine after suffering a broken leg in last year's playoffs. There is hope for more power from Tejada, and he won't hurt in average, either. However, playing time is the issue. If he remains with the Mets, he's a speculative add late in NL-only leagues. He'd have more fantasy value if he were to be traded, most likely.

Mets | Dilson Herrera could start at 2B

Wed, 04 Nov 2015 12:01:36 -0800

New York Mets 2B Dilson Herrera is a "viable alternative" at second base if 2B Daniel Murphy does not return in 2016. The Mets are expected to make a one-year, $15.8 million qualifying offer to Murphy by the deadline Friday, Nov. 6. The Mets are prepared to use a middle-infield combination of SSs Wilmer Flores and Ruben Tejada and Herrera next year. Herrera hit .211 with three home runs and six RBI in 90 at-bats in the majors in 2015.

Fantasy Tip: Herrera hit 11 home runs and had a .331 batting average on the farm this year before calling up, so he surely has intriguing power for a middle infielder, and if he earns the starting job at the keystone if Murphy leaves, he definitely would garner attention in standard fantasy leagues as a middle infield option.

Mets | Daniel Murphy may be elsewhere in 2016

Mon, 19 Oct 2015 00:55:59 -0700

New York Mets 2B Daniel Murphy will not likely be retained next season by the team despite a late surge during the regular season and a strong postseason. The Mets may install either 2B Dilson Herrera or 2B Wilmer Flores at the position.

Fantasy Tip: New York Post writer Joel Sherman has heard Murphy ($4,600, 9.2% of cap) may be looking at a four-year deal worth $52 million. The club wants to keep the pitching staff together. Beware of Murphy for now, as his draft status is jumping high on some boards because of all his home runs.

Mets | Daniel Murphy out of lineup

Sat, 03 Oct 2015 15:50:54 -0700

New York Mets 2B Daniel Murphy is out of the lineup for Game 2 of a doubleheader Saturday, Oct. 3, with 2B Dilson Herrera hitting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Herrera ($2,600, 5.2% of cap) has a tough draw against Max Scherzer and isn't a good option on FantasyScore.

Mets | Wilmer Flores moving to keystone?

Thu, 25 Jun 2015 09:10:50 -0700

New York Mets SS Wilmer Flores has a "good possibility" of moving to second base when 2B Daniel Murphy (quadriceps) returns from the disabled list as soon as this weekend, according to a source familiar with internal team discussions. Murphy would move back to third base with SS Ruben Tejada playing shortstop at least in the short term. 2B Dilson Herrera would likely be the odd-man out in the infield. Flores has limited range at shortstop, and the Mets have struggled to turn double plays this year. Flores does have 10 home runs but is hitting only .243 with a .277 on-base percentage.

Fantasy Tip: This will do nothing to change Flores' ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) fantasy value at all. He does have suprising pop for a middle infielder, but his average isn't doing his owners any favors. Continue to view him as a low-end shortstop play on FantasyScore.

Mets | NY scuffling offensively

Wed, 24 Jun 2015 13:09:22 -0700

New York Mets 2B Dilson Herrera (1-for-17), OF Juan Lagares (3-for-23), 1B Lucas Duda (3-for-21) and OF Michael Cuddyer (3-for-21) have all been struggling on the team's current road trip. The Mets are hitting .168 with four home runs and eight runs scored while losing six straight on the road.

Fantasy Tip: That's a hint to consider using Jimmy Nelson ($5,500, 11.0% of cap) as a risk-reward option on FantasyScore against the Mets tonight. New York ranks 28th in baseball with a .659 OPS against right-handed pitchers. Shying away from Mets hitters right now in daily contests is wise.

Mets | NYM unlikely to pursue Everth Cabrera

Fri, 19 Jun 2015 17:51:25 -0700

The New York Mets are not expected to pursue SS Everth Cabrera, who was recently designated for assignment by the Baltimore Orioles, according to a team official. The Mets had expressed interest in Cabrera last offseason as a free agent but they are pleased with the production of SS Wilmer Flores, 2B Dilson Herrera and INF Ruben Tejada.

Fantasy Tip: Cabrera hit .208 with four RBIs and two steals in 29 games for the O's before being let go. It wouldn't be surprising to see another team pick him up but he is unlikely to be a viable fantasy option again this season.

Mets | Ruben Tejada sitting out vs. Giants

Thu, 11 Jun 2015 14:24:03 -0700

New York Mets 2B Ruben Tejada is not in the starting lineup Thursday, June 11. 2B Dilson Herrera is batting seventh and playing second base against San Francisco Giants SP Tim Lincecum Thursday.

Fantasy Tip: Tejada ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) has heated up over the past 12 games, and he has batted second in 11 of them and first the other. During the span, he has four runs, four doubles, six RBI, a stolen base and a .333/.389/.417 slash line. He is worth considering in cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues, although his value is likely fleeting. Herrera ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) is making his first start since Thursday, May 14, and should be viewed as nothing more than a desperation source of cap relief by FantasyScore players.
