Yankees | Masahiro Tanaka shelled

Sun, 21 Jun 2015 16:21:00 -0700

New York Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka allowed a career high-tying 10 hits and seven runs in five innings in a loss to the Detroit Tigers Sunday, June 21.

Fantasy Tip: Tanaka ($9,300, 18.6% of cap) is now 2-2 since returning from the disabled list, and although he has been impressive in three of his four starts, he isn't a must-start option at FantasyScore like many of the other starters in his price range.

Yankees | Masahiro Tanaka likely to start Sunday

Wed, 17 Jun 2015 16:46:55 -0700

New York Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka will likely make his next start Sunday, June 21, against the Detroit Tigers, as he's expected to be given an extra day of rest.

Fantasy Tip: Tanaka ($9,300, 18.6% of cap) has allowed just four earned runs in three starts since making his return to the rotation. Tanaka will have his regularly high upside, but he'll also carry more risk than usual while facing the Tigers at Yankee Stadium. Tanaka should be reserved for GPP use on FantasyScore.

Yankees | Masahiro Tanaka back to dominant form

Wed, 10 Jun 2015 11:13:52 -0700

New York Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka looked very impressive in his win over the Washington Nationals Tuesday, June 9, striking out six and walking none in seven innings. Sixty three of his 87 pitches were strikes. Tanaka touched 95 mph on the radar gun once with his heater but was consistently in the 93 mph range, and he had command of all of his pitches. C Brian McCann said Tanaka looks like the dominant pitcher he was in 2014. He's given up only two runs in 14 innings since he returned from the disabled list, and he is now 4-1 with a 2.48 ERA on the season.

Fantasy Tip: Remember, Tanaka ($8,500, 17.0% of cap) continues to defy the odds and pitch through a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. It's an injury that seems inevitable to need Tommy John surgery, but as long as he's looking dominant and has no velocity concerns, you should keep running him out there in fantasy leagues and on FantasyScore. There could be no better time to sell high on him in traditional formats, though.

Yankees | Masahiro Tanaka limits Nationals

Tue, 09 Jun 2015 19:02:50 -0700

New York Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka allowed a single run on five hits with six strikeouts to win his fourth game of the season during New York's 6-1 victory over the Washington Nationals Tuesday, June 9.

Fantasy Tip: With consecutive top-tier outings since returning from a forearm and wrist injury, Tanaka ($8,500, 17.0% of cap) can again be counted on as a solid fantasy option in all formats. His year-long numbers sit at a 2.48 ERA, a 0.80 WHIP and 39 strikeouts over 36 1/3 innings. Opposing hitters have a measly .172 batting average against him, too.

Yankees | Masahiro Tanaka sees velocity uptick

Sun, 07 Jun 2015 12:12:11 -0700

New York Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka said his elbow feels as good as it did last season, when he posted a 2.10 ERA in 115 innings over a three-month stretch. During his most recent start against the Seattle Mariners Wednesday, June 3, Tanaka averaged 93 mph on his fastball and even hit 95 mph on the radar gun several times.

Fantasy Tip: It's good to see that Tanaka ($7,800, 15.6% of cap) is throwing at his normal velocity again, although he relies more on location. His next start will be against Max Scherzer and the Washington Nationals Tuesday, June 9, making him a somewhat risky FantasyScore option.

Yankees | Michael Pineda to be skipped

Fri, 05 Jun 2015 13:44:09 -0700

New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda will have his next start skipped in order to preserve his innings for the season. SP CC Sabathia will now go Sunday, June 7, SP Masahiro Tanaka will pitch Tuesday, June 9, and SP Nathan Eovaldi will go Wednesday, June 10. Pineda's next start will come Friday, June 12.

Fantasy Tip: Pineda ($7,800, 15.6% of cap) is having a fine season with a 3.33 ERA and 9.7 strikeouts per nine innings over 11 starts. Instead he'll face the Baltimore Orioles in a week and should be a fine starting pitching option on FantasyScore. The way the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have been hitting, Sabathia on Sunday is a pretty big risk not worth taking.

Yankees | Masahiro Tanaka shines in return

Wed, 03 Jun 2015 16:18:37 -0700

New York Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka allowed only a run and three hits while walking none and striking out nine in his return from the disabled list against the Seattle Mariners Wednesday, June 3. He threw 58 of his 78 pitches for strikes as the team eased him back into the rotation.

Fantasy Tip: This outing will certainly give you some confidence in using Tanaka ($7,200, 14.4% of cap) in his next start, depending on the matchup. But remember, he continues to pitch with a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, and he'll likely face bumpy patches along the way if he manages to get through the rest of the season.

Yankees | Masahiro Tanaka to return Wednesday

Fri, 29 May 2015 16:28:15 -0700

New York Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka (forearm, wrist) will be activated from the disabled list to start against the Seattle Mariners Wednesday, June 3, according to manager Joe Girardi. Tanaka made two minor league starts for Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and Girardi expects him to throw around 80 pitches in his first start back.

Fantasy Tip: Tanaka ($7,200, 14.4% of cap) will be an extremely risky option on FantasyScore in his first start back next week. After that, though, as he continues to build arm strength, he'll be a risk/reward play in daily games. Don't forget that he continues to pitch through a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow, though.

Yankees | Masahiro Tanaka to be on pitch count

Fri, 29 May 2015 09:12:18 -0700

New York Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka (forearm, wrist) will be on a pitch count of between 80 to 90 pitches in his first start back from the disabled list, which is expected to come either Tuesday, June 2, or Wednesday, June 3, against the Seattle Mariners, according to manager Joe Girardi. Tanaka will also be given an extra day in between starts as much as possible. The likeliest candidate to be demoted from the rotation to make room for Tanaka is SP Adam Warren or SP Chris Capuano, who is 0-2 with a 7.36 ERA in two starts since coming off his own DL stint.

Fantasy Tip: Tanaka ($7,200, 14.4% of cap) should still be owned in all fantasy formats, but he's a much more risky commodity than he was in 2014, and each of his starts for the rest of the season should be viewed as risk/reward on FantasyScore. Avoiding him next week against the M's in his first start back would be prudent.

Yankees | Masahiro Tanaka to return next week?

Thu, 28 May 2015 16:15:01 -0700

New York Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka (forearm, wrist) is flying out west Thursday, May 28. Manager Joe Girardi said as long as Tanaka is feeling well, he'll make a start early next week against the Seattle Mariners.

Fantasy Tip: Until Tanaka ($7,200, 14.4% of cap) is seemingly inevitably shut down or undergoes Tommy John surgery to repair the tear in his ulnar collateral ligament, he is worth using on FantasyScore. Owners should be trying get every ounce of production out of Tanaka while they can, similarly to the Yankees.
