Yankees | Masahiro Tanaka notches first win

Sun, 17 Apr 2016 12:57:06 -0700

New York Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka delivered his finest outing of the season, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and no walks while fanning six over seven frames against the Seattle Mariners on Sunday, April 17.

Fantasy Tip: Tanaka failed to make it through six innings in each of his first two tries and issued four free passes in his last outing, so Sunday's start was a step in the right direction. He's the first Yankee to pitch seven innings this season as well, and should remain in lineups for his next scheduled start on Saturday at home against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Yankees | Masahiro Tanaka labors in no-decision

Tue, 12 Apr 2016 23:49:53 -0700

New York Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka allowed two earned runs, three hits and four walks with six strikeouts over five innings in a no-decision Tuesday, April 12, against the Toronto Blue Jays. He entered 5-2 with a 2.23 ERA in seven career starts against the Blue Jays, but he struggled with his command and high pitch count.

Fantasy Tip: Tanaka hasn't been very efficient to date, failing to go at least six innings in both of his outings. Still, he pitches for a good team and he hasn't been tuned up, either. He remains a strong fantasy option in most formats.

Yankees | Masahiro Tanaka throws many splitters

Tue, 05 Apr 2016 16:08:40 -0700

New York Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka threw 51 splitters out of 87 total pitches in his start Tuesday, April 5, and he featured just one four-seam fastball in the outing.

Fantasy Tip: The fact that Tanaka threw few fastballs in the outing may speak to the fact that his arm was feeling good and he was in a groove. However, too much reliance on the splitter could cause his elbow to bark later on in the year, and Tanaka already came in a big injury risk. He was good but not great Tuesday. Tanaka can pitch like an ace when he's healthy and on, and as long as elbow issues don't crop up, he can be a solid SP2.

Yankees | Masahiro Tanaka decent in no-decision

Tue, 05 Apr 2016 14:05:50 -0700

New York Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka allowed two earned runs in 5 2/3 innings Tuesday, April 5, in a 5-3 loss to the Houston Astros.

Fantasy Tip: Tanaka did a decent job in his first outing of the season, and it was not his fault the team lost. The bigger worry for Tanaka is his health, so as long as he stays on the right side of the disabled list then he should be a decent option.

Yankees | Masahiro Tanaka's splitter devastating

Tue, 05 Apr 2016 09:42:32 -0700

New York Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka's splitter was the most-chased pitch in baseball last season with a 52.5% chase rate.

Fantasy Tip: Tanaka was hit hard this spring, and his partially torn elbow ligament will continue to cast a cloud of doubt. However, he's still a solid SP2 in fantasy.

Yankees | Masahiro Tanaka won't have extra rest

Mon, 04 Apr 2016 11:21:36 -0700

New York Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka will not have any extra rest when he pitches against the Detroit Tigers this weekend, according to manager Joe Girardi. The Yankees game was postponed due to inclement weather Monday, April 4. Tanaka is scheduled to pitch against Detroit Sunday, April 10, with temperatures expected to be below 40 degrees.

Fantasy Tip: Tanaka is coming off injury questions and a poor spring, so it might make some sense to avoid him in daily and standard leagues to begin the season with daunting matchups against the Astros and Tigers.

MLB | Astros-Yankees pushed to Tuesday

Mon, 04 Apr 2016 08:58:25 -0700

The game between the Houston Astros and New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium Monday, April 4, has been pushed to Tuesday, April 5, due to a forecast for bad weather. Astros SP Dallas Keuchel is set to face Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka.

Fantasy Tip: Make sure you remove any players you may have from this game from your daily lineups Monday. Tanaka had a rough spring and is facing a strong up-and-coming offense, so he's a risk to deploy in daily games Tuesday.

Yankees | Masahiro Tanaka to start opener

Thu, 31 Mar 2016 11:16:51 -0700

New York Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka will officially start on opening day.

Fantasy Tip: Tanaka has been shaky this spring, and the coaching staff was unsure of his conditioning and mentality heading into the regular season. It's not a vote of confidence for his fantasy owners, and those in daily games should avoid him against the up-and-coming Houston Astros. In standard leagues, Tanaka is an injury risk and is better taken as your No. 3 or 4 starter.

Yankees | Masahiro Tanaka still up in air

Tue, 29 Mar 2016 15:05:21 -0700

New York Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka allowed seven hits and one run while striking out five against the Philadelphia Phillies in four spring innings Tuesday, March 29, but manager Joe Girardi is still hesitant to name Tanaka the opening day starter next week. Tanaka has allowed 23 hits in 15 spring innings, but his stuff was crisper that it looked last week.

Fantasy Tip: Girardi is unsettled with Tanaka's conditioning heading into opening day, and Tanaka's fantasy owners should be uneasy, as well. He hasn't looked very dominant this spring and is still pitching with a partially torn ligament in his elbow. It's fair to wonder if he can make it through another full season healthy, and he shouldn't be relied on as anything more than your third fantasy starter.
