Pirates | Gregory Polanco enjoys big night

Tue, 24 May 2016 19:57:55 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Gregory Polanco went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and five RBI Tuesday, May 24, against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He also added a double and his sixth home run of the year.

Fantasy Tip: Polanco has really been breaking out in his third major league season, as he actually leads the National League in doubles with 17, and his six homers in 163 at-bats are already almost as much as the nine he hit last season in 593 at-bats. While Starling Marte and Andrew McCutchen get most of the attention, Polanco has pretty much been as steady as any outfielder in the bigs thus far.

Pirates | Andrew McCutchen not in lineup Saturday

Sat, 21 May 2016 10:23:18 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Andrew McCutchen is not in the starting lineup against Colorado Rockies SP Tyler Chatwood Saturday, May 21. OF Starling Marte will bat second and play center field, with OF Gregory Polanco playing left field and batting third, while OF Matt Joyce starts in right field and bats sixth. In addition, INF Jung Ho Kang is batting cleanup and playing third base in his return to the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Remove McCutchen from all fantasy lineups this afternoon. Joyce is batting .353 with five home runs and 15 RBI in just 51 at-bats and should be viewed as an inexpensive source of offensive firepower for daily fantasy contests.

Tue, 17 May 2016 20:55:25 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Gregory Polanco went 3-for-5 with three doubles and one RBI against the Atlanta Braves Tuesday, May 17.

Fantasy Tip: Polanco has been a bit inconsistent at the plate this month but does have nine hits over the last five games. Polanco is hitting .307 this season and should be a fine starting option in all fantasy leagues.

Pirates | John Jaso, Gregory Polanco out

Sun, 15 May 2016 10:59:43 -0700

Fantasy Tip: Freese has played well during the first six weeks of the season and should be used in most leagues. Rodriguez is hitting .400 against left-handed pitchers this seasons and could be a sleeper option in daily fantasy leagues.

Pirates | Gregory Polanco shifted into three-hole

Fri, 06 May 2016 13:11:50 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Gregory Polanco is batting third against St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez Friday, May 6.

Fantasy Tip: Polanco looks to be putting it all together in his third season and sits with an impressive .300/.405/.510 slash line through his first 28 games. A move to the three-hole only helps his fantasy upside, and the emerging star may still have a slightly opened buy-low window to take advantage of.

Pirates | Gregory Polanco with shorter swing

Thu, 05 May 2016 10:38:10 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Gregory Polanco has shortened up his swing this year and has dramatically increased his walk rate from 8.4 to 15.3% this year and has also decreased his strikeout rate from 18.6 to 13.6%.

Fantasy Tip: Polanco, still just 24, is primed to hit for double-digit home runs for the first time in his career in 2016. Combine that with better plate discipline and his 30-stolen base potential and you have a young emerging talent that is a fine cornerstone for any fantasy squad.

Pirates | Bucs blast three tape-measure shots

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 23:34:18 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SS Jordy Mercer, OF Gregory Polanco and INF Sean Rodriguez each launched home runs in the win Friday, April 22, against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Mercer finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a walk, while Rodriguez drove in three runs.

Fantasy Tip: Polanco is a must-start fantasy option in most formats, while Mercer is a solid middle infielder option in NL-only play and deeper mixed leagues. Rodriguez is worth using in NL-only fantasy leagues and DFS play as a salary saver.

Pirates | John Jaso, David Freese sitting out

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 15:26:34 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B John Jaso and 3B David Freese are not in the starting lineup Friday, April 22. 1B Jason Rogers is starting at first base and is hitting sixth, while 1B Sean Rodriguez starts at third and is batting seventh against Arizona Diamondbacks SP Patrick Corbin. Also, SS Jordy Mercer moves to the leadoff spot and OF Gregory Polanco drops to eighth in the order.

Fantasy Tip: Rogers and Rodriguez don't move the needle all that much in daily fantasy leagues hitting near the bottom of the order. But they are facing a lefty in a positive hitting environment. Mercer has a little more intrigue as a low-end shortstop play, while Polanco loses some luster in daily formats against the southpaw.

Pirates | Gregory Polanco, John Jaso sitting

Wed, 20 Apr 2016 15:16:14 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Gregory Polanco and 1B John Jaso are not in the starting lineup against San Diego Padres left-handed SP Drew Pomeranz Wednesday, April 20. 1B Sean Rodriguez is starting in right field and hitting seventh, while C Chris Stewart is catching and hitting eighth. C Francisco Cervelli moves to first base and SS Jordy Mercer moves up to the leadoff spot.

Fantasy Tip: Rodriguez and Stewart are low-end daily options against the lefty Pomeranz, who has looked sharp in his first two outings of the season for the Friars. Mercer gains the most fantasy value for the evening. He hit .284 (23-for-81) against lefties last year but had zero homers against them. Despite the move up the order, Mercer's fantasy value is capped without much power.
