Pirates | Pittsburgh resting right side of infield

Sun, 24 Apr 2016 12:48:21 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B John Jaso and 2B Josh Harrison are not in the lineup Sunday, April 24, against Arizona Diamondbacks SP Robbie Ray. SS Jordy Mercer will replace Jaso in the leadoff spot while 1B Jason Rogers will occupy first base and bat fifth. INF Sean Rodriguez will slide over to second base and hit sixth.

Fantasy Tip: It's a rest day for Jaso and Harrison, each of whom are hitting well over .300. Mercer is 8-for-15 with a homer in the four games he has played during the Pirates' 10-game West Coast road trip and is a sensible low-cost option in DFS. Rodriguez has homered in each of the first two games of this series and appears to be in the middle of one of his patented power binges, making him a fine short-term pickup.

Diamondbacks | Robbie Ray brilliant

Tue, 19 Apr 2016 23:26:29 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Robbie Ray allowed five hits and two walks while fanning eight in six shutout innings to beat the San Francisco Giants Tuesday, April 19. "My breaking ball was the best it's been all year but mainly I was my fastball command," Ray said. "Everything was working."

Fantasy Tip: Ray is 1-0 with a 1.96 ERA, a 1.31 WHIP and 17 K's in 18 1/3 innings, and it's time for mixed leaguers to take notice. His WHIP is a little high thanks to his 11 walks, but he's worth adding.

Diamondbacks | Robbie Ray logs second quality start

Fri, 15 Apr 2016 09:14:21 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Robbie Ray recorded his second quality start of the season in as many tries Thursday, April 14, versus the Los Angeles Dodgers. He tossed 6 1/3 innings of two-run ball, surrendering four hits, five walks and striking out six.

Fantasy Tip: Another fine outing overall for the Diamondbacks' No. 4 starter, but the walks are becoming concerning. In fact, Ray issued more than three free passes in a game only three times last season, yet he's already done it in each of his two starts in 2016. As long as he can cut down on the walks, the 24-year-old southpaw can be an asset in many mixed leagues.

Diamondbacks | Robbie Ray locks up rotation job

Mon, 28 Mar 2016 19:00:34 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Robbie Ray was named the No. 5 starter by manager Chip Hale Monday, March 28. In his most recent outing Monday he allowed two runs, three hits and a walk over 6 1/3 innings with 10 strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Ray posted a 2-0 record with a 3.95 ERA and 1.24 WHIP in four Cactus League spring starts. He is worth a look at the back end of rotations in deeper NL-only fantasy leagues, but his value is marginal in most other formats.

Diamondbacks | Robbie Ray a lock for rotation spot?

Mon, 21 Mar 2016 14:54:49 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Robbie Ray appears to have won a starting rotation spot as the No. 5 starter after the team sent SP Archie Bradley to minor league camp.

Fantasy Tip: Ray is a volatile fantasy commodity that thrives on his fastball velocity and swinging strikes. However, his lack of control and diverse arsenal is what makes him nothing more than a late-round flier in deep mixed leagues. You'll have to be patient here.

Diamondbacks | Robbie Ray shines in Class AAA start

Fri, 18 Mar 2016 15:40:55 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Robbie Ray pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings with four strikeouts and no walks during a Class AAA start Friday, March 18.

Fantasy Tip: Ray posted an intriguing 8.4 K/9 last season, which makes him a worthy late-round grab in deep mixed and NL-only leagues. He also spun a 2.16 ERA with a 1.02 WHIP through 50 innings over eight first-half starts. Don't reach for Ray, but there is some upside entering his age-24 season should he fall in your lap in the endgame.

Diamondbacks | ARI has battle for two rotation spots

Wed, 17 Feb 2016 17:41:03 -0800

Arizona Diamondbacks SPs Rubby De La Rosa and Robbie Ray are believed to be the favorites to win the fourth and fifth spots in the team's starting rotation behind SPs Zack Greinke, Shelby Miller and Patrick Corbin, based on how they performed in 2015. SPs Archie Bradley, Zack Godley and Tyler Wagner are also believed to be involved in the competition.

Fantasy Tip: De La Rosa led all Arizona starters in victories (14) and games started (32) but posted a 4.67 ERA and served up 32 home runs over 188 2/3 innings in 2015. Ray went 5-12 but posted a respectable 3.52 ERA in 23 starts, along with 119 strikeouts in 127 2/3 innings. Both hurlers could be available in the later middle rounds of NL-only and cavernous mixed leagues, although fantasy owners should monitor the competition throughout spring training to make sure that they crack the rotation.

Diamondbacks | Jhoulys Chacin will make spot start

Mon, 24 Aug 2015 14:17:25 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Jhoulys Chacin was recalled from Class AAA Reno to start against the St. Louis Cardinals Monday, Aug. 24, so SP Robbie Ray can have an extra day of rest between starts.

Fantasy Tip: Make sure to avoid Ray ($5,100, 10.2% of cap) in all fantasy formats Monday, but especially at FantasyScore. Chacin should be viewed as a risky start in all fantasy formats Monday. While he has done well at Class AAA Reno this season with a 3.39 ERA over 12 starts, it is a daunting matchup. Expect Ray to start against St. Louis Tuesday, Aug. 25, which also isn't a great spot for the lefty.

Diamondbacks | Robbie Ray fans eight Giants

Sat, 18 Jul 2015 05:18:31 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Robbie Ray struck out eight batters over five innings while allowing two runs on eight hits during Arizona's 6-5 loss to the San Francisco Giants Friday, July 17.

Fantasy Tip: Ray ($5,100, 10.2% of cap) really has been a surprise of late, and his 2.29 ERA, 2.57 FIP, 1.07 WHIP and 7.5 K/9 are worthy marks in the majority of seasonal leagues. His recent run may prove to be sustainable, too. He is worth an add in deep mixed leagues, and FantasyScore players could target the hurler in favorable matchups.

Diamondbacks | Robbie Rays posts career high

Tue, 07 Jul 2015 21:49:40 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Robbie Ray allowed two unearned runs and four hits with a walk in a career-high 7 2/3 innings in a win against the Texas Rangers Tuesday, July 7. He also struck out four batters.

Fantasy Tip: Ray ($5,100; or 10.2% of cap) has lasted at least six innings in five of the past six games, and he has quality starts in five of his eight outings. He is a solid mid-level FantasyScore option.
