Bills | Sammy Watkins shining in practice

Thu, 27 Aug 2015 18:46:31 -0700

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins has been able to beat CB Stephon Gilmore in practice on multiple occasions, and Tyler Dunne of the Buffalo News called Watkins the August MVP.

Fantasy Tip: Watkins has been slowed by minor injuries during the preseason, but the bigger concern for his fantasy value is the quarterback situation in Buffalo. He has plenty of upside, but expecting him to be more than a high-end WR3 is risky.

Bills | Sammy Watkins out Saturday

Thu, 27 Aug 2015 11:40:51 -0700

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (gluteus) won't play in the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 29.

Fantasy Tip: Watkins is being treated cautiously and is expected to play in Week 1. He's a mid-to-low WR2 in fantasy.

Bills | Playing it safe with Sammy Watkins

Tue, 25 Aug 2015 21:29:03 -0700

The Buffalo Bills are playing it safe with WR Sammy Watkins (glute), and he remained out of team drills Tuesday, Aug. 25. He was in full pads Tuesday, and worked with other players going through rehab. The team has played it safe with Watkins over the past two weeks, and held him out of the last preseason game due to his sore glute.

Fantasy Tip: The injury certainly doesn't sound serious, and the Bills are simply trying to preserve Watkins for the regular season rather than risk him during games which do not mean anything in the standings. He is a decent middle- to late-round pick for depth at wide receiver in most fantasy formats.

Bills | Several key Bills return to practice

Sat, 22 Aug 2015 12:17:03 -0700

Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson (hamstring) and WRs Sammy Watkins (glute), Robert Woods (hip) and Marcus Easley (knee) all returned to practice Saturday, Aug. 22.

Fantasy Tip: Watkins is the biggest return for Buffalo, although Jackson and Woods are important offensive pieces as well. When healthy, Watkins can achieve WR2 production. Woods is an undervalued sleeper and should be drafted as a low-end WR4 to high-end WR5. Jackson was a PPR monster last season, but he won't see as much playing time as long as LeSean McCoy is healthy. View him as a RB4 in PPR leagues. Easley can be left on waivers.

Bills | Sammy Watkins taking part in practice

Sat, 22 Aug 2015 09:03:20 -0700

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (glute) is participating in practice Saturday, Aug. 22.

Fantasy Tip: Watkins appears to have recovered from his injury and is back at practice. Watkins likely will receive the most targets among the receivers this season and could be a middle-round option in most leagues.

Bills | Sammy Watkins leaves practice

Mon, 17 Aug 2015 13:12:00 -0700

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (gluteus) left practice early Monday, Aug. 17, with gluteal tightness, according to head coach Rex Ryan.

Fantasy Tip: Anything related to the gluteus doesn't really seem like a serious injury, but this should still be monitored seeing as Watkins is one of Buffalo's best players. As long as he's healthy, he's a WR2 candidate.

Bills | Sammy Watkins returned to drills

Wed, 12 Aug 2015 18:35:03 -0700

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (ankle) returned to team drills Wednesday, Aug. 12.

Fantasy Tip: The injury that briefly took Watkins to the sidelines shouldn't be of concern for fantasy owners.

Bills | Sammy Watkins having ankle looked at

Wed, 12 Aug 2015 16:21:36 -0700

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (ankle) stepped out of drills Wednesday, Aug. 12, and trainers were checking out his right ankle. The injury doesn't seem too serious as both Watkins and the training staff were seen smiling.

Fantasy Tip: Even though this doesn't seem serious, fantasy owners will need to monitor the situation closely, as any missed time by Watkins would affect the entire offense.

Bills | QB eyeing Sammy Watkins

Tue, 11 Aug 2015 13:53:32 -0700

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins seems to be developing a rapport with QB Matt Cassel during training camp, according to NFL Network's LaDainian Tomlinson. Tomlinson said Cassel is looking for Watkins frequently and the two seem to be on the same page.

Fantasy Tip: Watkins is by far the Bill's biggest receiving threat. While he may see a lot of attention from opposing defenses, he'll also see a sizable amount of targets. View him as a WR2 in all scoring formats when healthy.

Bills | Sammy Watkins returns

Sat, 08 Aug 2015 15:27:53 -0700

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (hip) returned to practice Saturday, Aug. 8.

Fantasy Tip: Watkins is a popular WR2 selection, and hopefully the scare with the hip is behind him.

Bills | Sammy Watkins out Friday

Fri, 07 Aug 2015 07:38:58 -0700

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (hip) is out of practice Friday, Aug. 7.

Fantasy Tip: Watkins' hip flaring up is a pressing issue, despite the team downplaying it. Watkins is a WR2 in fantasy, but his injury needs to be monitored closely.

Bills | Sammy Watkins leaves practice early

Thu, 06 Aug 2015 09:52:14 -0700

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (hip) left practice early Thursday, Aug. 6, because of soreness in his surgically repaired hip. Head coach Rex Ryan said he does not believe Watkins is dealing with anything serious.

Fantasy Tip: Watkins may take a few days off before returning to the field. Watkins should be the team's No. 1 receiver this season but may lose some fantasy value since the team will be more of a running team under Rex Ryan. Watkins could still be a middle- to late-round option in most leagues.

Bills | Sammy Watkins shines as blocker

Mon, 03 Aug 2015 06:48:58 -0700

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins was a stellar blocker in practice Sunday, Aug. 2. He drove CB Mario Butler 10 yards with Butler's feet off the ground, according to Bills head coach Rex Ryan, who said it was something he hadn't seen in his coaching career.

Bills | Sammy Watkins' targets to decline?

Sun, 26 Jul 2015 20:40:33 -0700

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins was targeted 128 times last year, but only one receiver has been targeted more than 110 times in a season for head coach Rex Ryan.

Fantasy Tip: Watkins has the physical tools to be an elite fantasy receiver, but the situation in Buffalo is not conducive for success. The Bills are going to have a run-first offense, and the quarterback situation is a major question mark. Don't count on Watkins being more than a WR3 in 2015.

Bills | Sammy Watkins' production deceiving

Sun, 26 Jul 2015 18:09:25 -0700

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins recorded 53.3% of his receiving yards and four of his six touchdowns in four games last year.

Fantasy Tip: Although Watkins finished just shy of 1,000 yards, he was far from steady from one week to the next. With Rex Ryan planning to install a run-heavy approach in 2015, Watkins will likely continue to be a boom-or-bust fantasy play. Don't expect him to be more than a WR3.

Bills | Percy Harvin struggling with routes

Sat, 25 Jul 2015 18:17:31 -0700

Buffalo Bills WR Percy Harvin required detailed instruction on how to run routes during OTAs, and Vic Carucci of the Buffalo News believes Harvin will open the year as the No. 3 receiver behind WR Sammy Watkins and WR Robert Woods.

Fantasy Tip: Harvin still has big-play speed, but his lack of consistency isn't going to improve as the No. 3 receiver in a run-heavy offense that lacks a reliable quarterback. At best, he is a late-round flier deeper leagues.

Bills | Sammy Watkins among least productive

Thu, 16 Jul 2015 19:36:50 -0700

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins had a catch percentage of 52.0 last season, ranking among the least effective wide receivers in the NFL.

Fantasy Tip: Poor quarterback play certainly contributed to Watkins' poor percentage, but injuries and adjusting to life as a No. 1 receiver in the NFL didn't help either. Watkins is still an explosive weapon, but he will likely endure another inconsistent season due to continued question marks under center and Rex Ryan's commitment to a run-heavy offensive approach. Consider him a borderline WR3.

Bills | Sammy Watkins should be ready for camp

Sun, 05 Jul 2015 07:11:50 -0700

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (hip) is expected to be ready for the start of training camp after he was limited during offseason workouts.

Fantasy Tip: Watkins is working his way back from offseason hip surgery and will be the team's No. 1 receiver this season if he is healthy. Watkins' fantasy value will be affected by the new run-first offense but could still be a middle- to late-round option in most fantasy leagues.

Bills | Sammy Watkins remains idle

Tue, 16 Jun 2015 08:26:24 -0700

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (hip) is not participating in team drills Tuesday, June 16.

Fantasy Tip: Watkins has plenty of time to be ready for the season and is a WR2 in fantasy. He comes with some caution, though, because of the injury and his targets expected to be reduced.

Bills | Sammy Watkins likely to see fewer balls

Tue, 09 Jun 2015 09:47:15 -0700

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (hip) will likely see a reduction from his team-leading 128 targets last season.

Fantasy Tip: His hip surgery could be a small factor, but the team simply has more weapons around him this season. Watkins is a low-end WR2 even with the reduced targets.

Bills | Sammy Watkins mentally taking reps

Thu, 04 Jun 2015 08:20:01 -0700

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (hip) said he is mentally taking repetitions in practice while he is limited. He joins the huddle and then simulates lining up to run a pass route by going to his designated side of the formation but remaining behind the line of scrimmage. "Mentally, I've got to get my reps," Watkins said. "I'm behind. I'm not there every day with the guys running routes. So, mentally, I've got to watch the defense, the coverages, watch how things move because I'm going to be coming back soon. And everything's got to be fast and I've got to pick it up."

Fantasy Tip: Watkins is a mid-to-low WR2 in fantasy, but his recovery from hip surgery could deflate that in training camp.

Bills | Sanjay Lal talks Buffalo WRs

Tue, 19 May 2015 06:10:06 -0700

Buffalo Bills wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal discussed the team's wide receivers in great detail Monday, May 18, saying he likes the flexibility among the corps and their ability to execute on the field. Lal believes Bills WR Sammy Watkins can become a complete receiver, and he praised WR Robert Woods' ability as a route runner. Lal doesn't want to pigeonhole WR Percy Harvin as being a gadget-play receiver.

Fantasy Tip: While Lal is right about his primary receiving weapons, someone still has to get the ball into their hands from a cast of likely mediocre quarterback options. Furthermore, Buffalo has invested a tremendous amount of money into their running game and have a head coach in Rex Ryan whose mantra on offense has been "ground and pound." Temper your fantasy expectations in all formats for this tethered passing game full of explosive players.

Bills | Sammy Watkins to be full go

Wed, 15 Apr 2015 20:32:02 -0700

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (hip) is able to work out in some capacity during the team's offseason program, although head coach Rex Ryan indicated Wednesday, April 15, that he doesn't expect Watkins to do many football-related activities training camp. "My understanding is Sammy is doing really well," Ryan said. "We're not going to see him out there until training camp. But he should be full go when we get to training camp."

Fantasy Tip: Watkins sounds to be progressing nicely from an offseason procedure on his hip. Thatís great news for fantasy owners in dynasty leagues. Watkins will be a low-end WR2 or solid WR3 or flex play once the season comes around, perhaps more if the Buffalo quarterback position play improves dramatically.

Bills | Sammy Watkins limited during workouts

Mon, 06 Apr 2015 15:10:04 -0700

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (hip) was limited at the team's voluntary offseason workout Monday, April 6, after undergoing surgery on his hip earlier this offseason. He rode an exercise bike and did some warmup drills Monday.

Fantasy Tip: It's no surprise that Watkins is limited this early in offseason workouts. He's expected to be good to go for training camp this summer and the start of the regular season. Watkins has plenty of physical skills, but the uncertainty around the quarterback position in Buffalo makes Watkins better left as a WR3 with upside for more in fantasy leagues.

Bills | Sammy Watkins injury update

Fri, 03 Apr 2015 13:10:39 -0700

Updating previous reports, Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (hip) underwent surgery to repair a slight tear of the labrum in his hip, according to a source. Watkins had the surgery around the time of the Super Bowl.

Fantasy Tip: Watkins likely will not do much during offseason workouts but should be ready for training camp. He likely will be selected in the middle rounds of drafts and be a No. 2 or No. 3 wide receiver for owners.

Bills | Sammy Watkins will be ready for camp

Fri, 03 Apr 2015 12:07:13 -0700

Updating a previous report, Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (hip) will be able to some things during offseason workouts but should be ready for the start of training camp.

Fantasy Tip: Watkins does not need to rush his recovery since he is the team's No. 1 receiver. He should be ready for the regular season if he does not suffer any setbacks but will have to learn a new offense. Owners could consider selecting Watkins in the middle rounds of drafts as a No. 2 or No. 3 wide receiver.

Bills | No timetable for Sammy Watkins

Fri, 03 Apr 2015 10:41:45 -0700

Updating a previous report, Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (hip) is expected to be ready for the regular season, but there remains no timetable for his return to action after having offseason hip surgery. It's unknown if Watkins will be ready for the team's offseason program, with voluntary workouts starting April 28.

Fantasy Tip: Watkins' hip procedure is worth keeping an eye on this offseason. He'll need to learn a new offensive system under Rex Ryan, and his recovery may prevent him from receiving much-needed repetitions. Watkins should be a low-end No. 2 or high-end No. 3 receiver, though, if he's ready for Week 1.

Bills | Sammy Watkins had hip procedure

Fri, 03 Apr 2015 08:16:53 -0700

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (hip) had surgery to clean out his hip area early in the offseason.

Fantasy Tip: Watkins should be ready well before the season opens, and the addition of LeSean McCoy could take some pressure off of him. He's a low-end WR2 or a high-end WR3 in traditional formats.

Bills | Sammy Watkins could see backups

Thu, 25 Dec 2014 07:36:43 -0800

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins could play against the New England Patriots' backups on defense for a significant portion of the Week 17 game.

Fantasy Tip: Watkins is a solid WR2 with upside on FantasyScore this week because of the likelihood of Darrelle Revis sitting for a chunk of the game.

Bills | Sammy Watkins listed as probable

Fri, 05 Dec 2014 11:27:44 -0800

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (hip) was limited during practice Friday, Dec. 5, and is listed as probable for Week 14.

Fantasy Tip: Watkins should be able to play this week but will be facing a solid Denver Broncos defense. Watkins has a price of $5,800 on FantasyScore, but owners may want to lower their expectations if they use him because of his matchup.

Bills | Three Bills WRs are limited

Thu, 04 Dec 2014 13:16:14 -0800

Buffalo Bills WRs Chris Hogan (hamstring), Sammy Watkins (hip) and Robert Woods (ankle) were all limited in practice for the second straight day Thursday, Dec. 4.

Fantasy Tip: All three have a good chance of suiting up against the Denver Broncos. Hogan ($3,100) is the cheapest of the three as a short-area target for Kyle Orton. Denver's cornerbacks are pretty solid, but could be left one-on-one often against Watkins ($5,700) and Woods ($3,600). If Buffalo falls behind early and is forced to the air often, all three should benefit at FantasyScore.

Bills | Sammy Watkins hitting rookie wall?

Thu, 04 Dec 2014 09:40:25 -0800

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins has declined in production of late, and he's trying to fight through the rookie wall late in his first season in the NFL. Watkins was named the league's Offensive Rookie of the Month in October, but he had just 13 catches for 105 yards in a four-game stretch in November. "Later in the year, defenders read your body language, how you come off the ball," Watkins said. "There's some things I got to switch up. That comes with just changing your game up. If you do the same thing for nine or 10 weeks, people can figure out how you do things." Watkins has also been drawing the opposing team's top cornerback, and last week it was Cleveland Browns CB Joe Haden. It doesn't figure to get any easier for Watkins this weekend, either as the Denver Broncos boast two of the best cornerback tandems in CBs Aqib Talib and Chris Harris Jr. Watkins has also been bothered by a hip injury recently and has dealt with groin problems in the last month. Watkins also admits to battling the mental demands of the NFL as the season wares on.

Fantasy Tip: Watkins will cost $5,700 as he faces the Broncos this week at FantasyScore. Watkins faces another stiff test this weekend, but he could outperform his cost if he's left in single coverage often and the Bills are forced to throw to play catch-up.

Bills | Sammy Watkins practicing

Wed, 03 Dec 2014 09:42:11 -0800

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (hip) is participating in practice Wednesday, Dec. 3.

Fantasy Tip: Watkins appears to be on track to play in Week 14 despite his injury. Watkins has struggled over the last four weeks with 35 yards being his highest receiving total in that span. Watkins will be facing an above average Denver Broncos defense and his $5,700 price tag on FantasyScore may be too expensive for some owners.

Bills | Sammy Watkins has hip injury

Mon, 01 Dec 2014 13:06:15 -0800

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (hip) suffered a hip injury in Week 13, and the severity of the injury is not known. Watkins was able to play every snap during the game.

Fantasy Tip: Owners should monitor the situation during the week to see if Watkins has to miss any time because of the injury. Watkins has not posted good numbers over the last several games but will be facing a Denver Broncos pass defense that has struggled against wide receivers over the past month. Watkins could be a risky option because of the injury but also has the potential of having a productive game if he is active.

Bills | Sammy Watkins, Chris Hogan practice

Thu, 20 Nov 2014 13:42:37 -0800

Buffalo Bills WRs Sammy Watkins (groin) and Chris Hogan (hip) both practiced in full for the second straight day Thursday, Nov. 20. The Bills did not actually practice Thursday, so their status is an estimation.

Fantasy Tip: The New York Jets allow an average of 24.23 fantasy points to wideouts, which is great news for Watkins ($6,200) and Hogan ($3,100). More great news: The Bills will no longer play in wintry conditions in Buffalo this weekend. Both could be sneaky good plays this weekend.

Wed, 19 Nov 2014 13:49:18 -0800

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (groin) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Nov. 19. The team did not hold a practice Wednesday, so this is an estimation.

Fantasy Tip: Watkins should be able to play in Week 12 but may have to deal with rough weather conditions during the game. Watkins costs $6,200 on FantasyScore, which may be too expensive for some owners.

Bills | Chris Hogan the No. 2 wideout

Fri, 14 Nov 2014 09:50:20 -0800

Buffalo Bills WR Chris Hogan now has caught at least five passes in four of the team's last five games, and he has surpassed WRs Robert Woods and Mike Williams as the second option behind WR Sammy Watkins in the team's short passing game. Watkins was mostly a non-factor in Week 11 against Miami Dolphins CB Brent Grimes.

Fantasy Tip: Hogan entered Week 11 costing the minimum for wide receivers ($3,000) at FantasyScore. That figure is likely to rise for next week, but probably not all that much. With Kyle Orton's dink-and-dunk ways, Hogan should now be on your radar for a fantasy flex option.

Wed, 12 Nov 2014 13:39:27 -0800

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (groin) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Nov. 12, and is listed as probable for Week 11.

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (groin) practiced in full Monday, Nov. 10. Watkins played 93 percent of the offensive snaps in Week 10 against the Kansas City Chiefs.

It's a long season so I'm really clueless right now. I don't know," Watkins said. "They didn't update me or really tell me what's going on."

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to monitor the situation and check the inactive list to see if he is able to play. Watkins costs $6,600 on FantasyScore, but owners may want to think about spending their money on healthier options.

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (groin) suffered a groin injury during practice Wednesday, Nov. 5, and was not able to finish. He is listed as a limited participant.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to monitor the situation to see if he is able to return to practice at some point this week. Watkins may now be a risky option to use and may not be worth his $6,600 price tag on FantasyScore.
