Browns | Key Browns sitting out

Thu, 03 Sep 2015 15:44:47 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown, RB Isaiah Crowell and WR Andrew Hawkins are among those not playing Thursday, Sept. 3, against the Chicago Bears.

Fantasy Tip: This is the route most teams are taking tonight -- not playing their key starters. Consider Crowell a low-end RB2 to high-end RB3. Hawkins is a PPR sleeper at wide receiver while McCown should be drafted as a backup.

Browns | Cleveland lacking bell-cow running back

Mon, 10 Aug 2015 15:34:58 -0700

Cleveland Browns running backs coach Wilbert Montgomery called out the team's running backs for not stepping up and demanding the starting job and for not showing up to training camp in "tip-top shape." RBs Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell haven't stepped up to prove themselves as starting backs with rookie RB Duke Johnson (hamstring) injured. "The guys that were here last year, you look for somebody to take that next step," Montgomery said. "Is it going to happen? I don't know, and that's why I let them know every day, the competition is still the same. It hasn't changed. Nobody wants the role." Montgomery would prefer to avoid a running-back-by-committee approach that he took with several rookie runners in 2014. Crowell will not win the starting role by default because he's the only fully healthy running back. Montgomery sounded more positive about West than Crowell. Both running backs split the workload last season. Montgomery wasn't ready to rule out Johnson though, even though he could miss multiple preseason games. Johnson has shown to be more versatile than the other backs on roster.

Fantasy Tip: Based on what Montgomery had to say, it seems like his preference is Johnson, West and Crowell, in that order. However, with Johnson injured, anything can happen leading into Week 1. Johnson clearly has the most upside for fantasy owners and plenty of versatility out of the backfield, but will his injuries hurt him, and how much can you trust him in his rookie season. All three running backs could see substantial touches this year, and it'll probably be a situation that'll give fantasy owners tons of headaches.

Browns | Isaiah Crowell to start?

Sat, 08 Aug 2015 08:48:10 -0700

Cleveland Browns RB Isaiah Crowell likely will be the starting running back when the regular season begins, in the opinion of Tony Grossi, of ESPNCleveland.com.

Fantasy Tip: Things could change based on the preseason, but Crowell could receive a majority of the carries at the start of the season. The Browns have other running backs that probably will see playing time, and the team could use a committee at the position. Crowell could be a middle-round option in some leagues if he wins the job.

Browns | Isaiah Crowell works with first team

Fri, 31 Jul 2015 12:14:45 -0700

Cleveland Browns RB Isaiah Crowell was the first running back to work with the first-team offense during practice Friday, July 31.

Fantasy Tip: Crowell worked with the starters after Terrance West received snaps with the first-team offense during the first day of training camp. The Browns probably will use a committee at running back, which hurts the fantasy value of all of the backs. Crowell should still see solid playing time and could be a middle- to late-round option in drafts.

Browns | Isaiah Crowell struggling early

Thu, 30 Jul 2015 13:58:58 -0700

Cleveland Browns RB Isaiah Crowell and QB Josh McCown had trouble exchanging the football more than once early in practice Thursday, July 30. Crowell also struggled securing the football in his rookie season.

Fantasy Tip: As head coach Mike Pettine said, this is why teams have training camps and practices. Everything isn't going to mesh right away. It is disconcerting that Crowell's ball security issues are coming up again, though. If he can fix, or at least lessen, that problem, he's worth a look as a high-end RB3.

Browns | Duke Johnson won't start right away

Fri, 24 Jul 2015 15:58:52 -0700

Cleveland Browns RB Duke Johnson will play a prominent role in Cleveland's offense in his rookie year, but RB Isaiah Crowell is still the favorite to start. Johnson is also the most capable pass-catcher in the trio of Johnson, Crowell and RB Terrence West, according to Nate Ulrich of The Akron Beacon Journal.

Fantasy Tip: The Browns' backfield certainly has the makings of a three-headed monster. Crowell and West will probably do most of the running, while Johnson should be used most of the three in the passing game. Any one of them could end up as a RB2. Crowell will have the most value right away, but Johnson may have the most upside.

Browns | CLE could ride hot hand at RB

Thu, 16 Jul 2015 13:57:17 -0700

Cleveland Browns RBs Isaiah Crowell, Terrance West and Duke Johnson are expected to make up a three-headed committee this season in the backfield. Offensive coordinator John DeFilippo has said there won't be a specific method for how touches are distributed, but Crowell is expected to begin the season as the starter.

Fantasy Tip: Crowell, West and Johnson all have the ability to be Cleveland's starting running back. Crowell and West both had stellar rookie campaigns in 2014, and Johnson has impressed everyone in his first offseason out of the University of Miami (Fla.). Crowell should be selected first in drafts, but this backfield could turn into a crapshoot.

Browns | Isaiah Crowell more confident

Thu, 16 Jul 2015 13:31:07 -0700

Cleveland Browns RB Isaiah Crowell said he feels more confident heading into his second season. The second-year running back said he felt too anxious last year and that he can be more relaxed now that he has a year of professional football under his belt.

Fantasy Tip: It will be interesting to see how snaps are split up between the Browns' running backs, mainly Crowell, Terrance West and rookie Duke Johnson. All three are worth at least a middle-round pick this year, but Crowell should be taken first and considered in RB3 territory.

Browns | Isaiah Crowell could be lead back

Fri, 19 Jun 2015 10:18:06 -0700

Cleveland Browns RB Isaiah Crowell could be the workhorse back if his ball security improves, according to offensive coordinator John DeFilippo.

Fantasy Tip: The pecking order is fluid, but it sounds like Crowell, Duke Johnson and Terrance West. Crowell is a low-end RB2 or high-end RB3 right now.

Browns | Duke Johnson impressing

Sat, 13 Jun 2015 10:41:10 -0700

Cleveland Browns RB Duke Johnson has been performing well this offseason, showcasing his explosiveness and versatility. Johnson will compete with RBs Isaiah Crowell and Terrance West for the starting running back position.

Fantasy Tip: It's a crowded backfield in Cleveland, and Crowell and West played well in their rookie seasons last year. Don't be surprised if this turns into a committee. The Browns have already said Johnson will be moved around and won't play on every down. Right now, Crowell has the most value and is in RB3 territory. West and Johnson are more in the RB4 conversation as it stands.
