San Francisco 49ers SS Jimmie Ward (foot), the team's first-round draft pick, was not named on the Non-Football Injury or Physically Unable to Perform lists Thursday, July 17, meaning he has been cleared to take part in all football activities in training camp after undergoing surgery March 9 to fix the fifth metatarsal bone in his right mid-foot area. Ward is expected to compete for the third safety job and the nickel cornerback role in his first season.

San Francisco 49ers first-round pick SS Jimmie Ward is not expected to start at safety with S Antoine Bethea and S Eric Reid slated to start. Ward is expected to be in the mix at nickel back. "The nickel's been on the field 60 percent of the time for us," said 49ers general manager Trent Baalke. "So that's a starter in our opinion."
