Red Sox | Rusney Castillo outrighted

Mon, 20 Jun 2016 11:11:54 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Rusney Castillo cleared waivers Monday, June 20, and was outrighted to Class AAA Pawtucket.

Fantasy Tip: Castillo is only hitting .245 at Triple-A this year, and his prospect star is starting to fade. He turns 29 next month and probably isn't worth owning in AL-only leagues.

Red Sox | Rusney Castillo on waivers

Sun, 19 Jun 2016 14:06:58 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Rusney Castillo was placed on outright waivers by the team Sunday, June 19. Castillo is still owed over $50 million on his seven-year, $72.5 million contract.

Fantasy Tip: Feel free to drop Castillo from all formats immediately, if he was even on your roster to start. This may go down as one of the bigger busts in recent Red Sox history. There is still a chance he could come back strong down the stretch, but it's going to take a miracle for that to happen.

Red Sox | Rusney Castillo sent down

Sat, 18 Jun 2016 05:46:00 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Rusney Castillo was optioned to Class AAA Pawtucket Friday, June 17.

Fantasy Tip: Castillo has received limited playing time this season and has gone 2-for-8 at the plate. He could be called back up later in the season but is not a strong fantasy option.

Red Sox | Rusney Castillo starting vs. Baltimore

Thu, 16 Jun 2016 12:18:10 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Rusney Castillo is starting in left field and batting seventh against Baltimore Orioles SP Tyler Wilson Thursday, June 16. OF Chris Young (quadriceps) is not in the starting lineup Thursday.

Fantasy Tip: Castillo has flashed upside, but he also posted an underwhelming .245/.304/.320 slash line through 161 plate appearances. View him as a bench option in cavernous mixed and AL-only setups, and in daily contests Thursday, Castillo is worth a flier. Young is having a nice season with a .286/.353/.562 line in limited playing time. He is worth owning in deep mixed leagues because of his uptick in playing time of late, however, you'll want to monitor his status given his current injury.

Red Sox | Rusney Castillo called up

Sun, 05 Jun 2016 09:27:39 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Rusney Castillo was called up from the minors Sunday, June 5, after the Red Sox placed C Ryan Hanigan (neck) on the disabled list with a neck strain.

Fantasy Tip: Castillo was a disappointment this spring and started the year in the minors, where he was hitting .245/.304/.320 with just one home run and 13 RBI in 38 games for Class AAA Pawtucket. The Cuban must make improvements to deliver on his power-speed combination and reward fantasy owners, and he could see more chances at the major league level now that Brock Holt and Blake Swihart are both injured. Chris Young is expected to see the majority of starts in left field now, though.

Red Sox | Jackie Bradley back in the mix

Fri, 03 Jun 2016 12:22:02 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Jackie Bradley Jr. was activated from the paternity list Friday, June 3. In a corresponding move, OF Rusney Castillo was optioned to Class AAA Pawtucket.

Fantasy Tip: Bradley owns a .331/.409/.601 slash line for the season and recently posted a 29-game hit streak. Jumping back into the a potent lineup will help him avoid any lengthy slumps going forward, and Bradley should be returned to all starting lineups immediately. Castillo is nothing more than a desperation stash in cavernous mixed and AL-only formats at this stage of the game.

Red Sox | Chris Young in CF for short term

Tue, 31 May 2016 14:17:04 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Chris Young is expected to start in center field while OF Jackie Bradley Jr. is on leave, according to manager John Farrell. OF Rusney Castillo will provide versatility off the bench.

Fantasy Tip: Young has decent power but struggles against right-handers. In daily games he makes for a great value against southpaws, but should basically be avoided otherwise. Castillo is a big-time Boston prospect that has disappointed hugely so far. He's likely headed back to the minors when Bradley is activated in a few days.

Red Sox | Jackie Bradley Jr. on paternity leave

Tue, 31 May 2016 12:44:16 -0700

Updating a previous item, Boston Red Sox OF Jackie Bradley Jr. is not in the lineup because he is on paternity leave. OF Rusney Castillo was recalled from Class AAA Pawtucket in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: There is no timetable on Bradley's return, although he will likely be out for a few days. Castillo has been doing a decent job against minor league pitching, with a .241 average and eight doubles in 37 games, so he carries some fantasy value in daily leagues. Castillo will likely head down to the minors when Bradley comes back, so don't overspend in other formats.

Red Sox | Rusney Castillo optioned

Wed, 13 Apr 2016 19:32:28 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Rusney Castillo has been optioned to Class AAA Pawtucket. "This is an opportunity to get him down there and get the at-bats needed," said manager John Farrell, who added that the corresponding player to be promoted is not necessarily going to be an outfielder.

Fantasy Tip: As the club's fifth outfielder, Castillo wasn't seeing much playing time at the MLB level and had only collected four at-bats through the first eight games of the season. He should only be monitored in AL-only fantasy formats for now.

Sat, 09 Apr 2016 07:16:10 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Jackie Bradley Jr. is not in the starting lineup against Toronto Blue Jays SP R.A. Dickey Saturday, April 9. OF Rusney Castillo will start in center field and is batting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Castillo will see his first plate appearances of the season Saturday and likely will be a fourth outfielder for the time being. Castillo probably should only be used in AL-only leagues at this point.
