Red Sox | Allen Craig making case for spot

Tue, 24 Mar 2015 15:34:40 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Allen Craig is hitting .276 in 36 spring at-bats, and he's looking more comfortable in his recovery from a Lisfranc injury to his left foot in 2014 that left him hitting just .128 in 29 games with the Red Sox after a summer trade. OF Shane Victorino is expected to be the starting right fielder, if healthy, but the team is still evaluating his readiness in camp. OF Daniel Nava is a lock for a roster spot as the main lefty bat off the bench. Craig may be out of a chance for a spot unless OF Rusney Castillo (oblique) opens up in the minors. "He's in great shape, and the foot's not an issue. He's taking better swings and having more consistent at-bats. (That time) beyond spring training is going to get here. I don't know how else we can go about it," manager John Farrell said.

Fantasy Tip: Even if Craig earns a roster spot for opening day, he's unlikely to see consistent playing time unless an injury opens up more playing time in the outfield. For that reason alone, Craig should only be considered in AL-only leagues, for now.

Red Sox | Rusney Castillo playing in game

Mon, 23 Mar 2015 10:35:44 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Rusney Castillo (oblique) is receiving his first Grapefruit League start in right field Monday, March 23. Castillo could see time in right this year if OF Shane Victorino misses any time.

Fantasy Tip: It's great news that Castillo is back in game action after an oblique strain, but he's likely to start in the minors in 2015, because the Red Sox want a better look at him. Castillo has the tools and upside to make a big impact in the bigs this year, but the absence of a clear path to playing time is the current problem. Consider Castillo in the later middle rounds for his upside, but you're unlikely to use him at FantasyScore in the opening week for $4,300 (8.6% of cap).

Red Sox | Rusney Castillo to start in minors?

Fri, 20 Mar 2015 10:44:22 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Rusney Castillo (oblique) is more likely to start the year at Triple-A Pawtucket after he injured his left oblique March 3. The Red Sox were hoping to get an extended look at Castillo this spring after signing him last August. General manager Ben Cherington said the team still expects Castillo to be a big part of the team going forward. Castillo hit .333 with two home runs and six RBI in 10 games for Boston in 2014.

Fantasy Tip: You can effectively temper your expectations for Castillo, at least at the start of the 2015 season. Before his injury, he was a popular sleeper pick in the middle rounds, mainly for his power upside. Mookie Betts, who's likely to start in center field on opening day, is now the more attractive fantasy selection. However, Castillo is still worth a speculative pick in the late rounds in standard 12-team mixed leagues.

Red Sox | Rusney Castillo nearing Grapefruit action

Thu, 19 Mar 2015 15:46:43 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Rusney Castillo (oblique) played another pain-free game Thursday, March 19, and he could make his Grapefruit League debut Saturday, March 21.

Fantasy Tip: Castillo's injury has allowed Mookie Betts to leapfrog him on the depth chart, and Betts projects to be the starting center fielder on opening day. Still, Boston invested heavily in Castillo, and he has tremendous upside worth targeting in the late middle rounds of mixed drafts.

Red Sox | Rusney Castillo thinks he can be ready

Wed, 18 Mar 2015 12:19:46 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Rusney Castillo (oblique) thinks he still has time to make the opening day roster after he felt fine playing in minor league games Wednesday, March 18.

Fantasy Tip: Unfortunately for Castillo, the BoSox likely want to see more at-bats from him this spring because he's still relatively new to them. Also, Mookie Betts has been a standout in camp and is the front-runner to start in center on opening day. The path to everyday at-bats for Castillo, at least early in the season, is shaky. That'll push him down draft boards a bit into the late middle rounds.

Red Sox | Rusney Castillo is nearing a return

Tue, 17 Mar 2015 17:08:31 -0700

Updating a previous report, Boston Red Sox OF Rusney Castillo (oblique) won't make his Grapefruit League debut Wednesday, March 18. He will get at-bats and play in the field in minor league games the next two days.

Fantasy Tip: Castillo's forthcoming return is positive news. He may now have time to be prepared for the start of the regular season. Unfortunately, Mookie Betts has been on fire, making it unlikely Castillo will win the starting center field job. With an unclear path to everyday at-bats, Castillo should only be selected in the later rounds of drafts for his upside.

Red Sox | Rusney Castillo may debut Wednesday

Tue, 17 Mar 2015 12:34:57 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Rusney Castillo (oblique) is on track to play Wednesday, March 18, in his first Grapefruit League game.

Fantasy Tip: Castillo's debut is highly anticipated as fantasy owners want to see how good he looks in spring games. Castillo, for now, should be taken in the later rounds of fantasy drafts because he is unproven and oblique injuries can be hard to shake off.

Red Sox | Rusney Castillo gradually improving

Thu, 12 Mar 2015 11:15:38 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Rusney Castillo (oblique) has yet to play after straining his left oblique March 3. He hit balls off a tee and took soft toss Thursday, March 12, and is progressing gradually, though, according to manager John Farrell. There remains plenty of time for Castillo to make the opening day roster, but as each day passes, his odds of starting on the disabled list go up. A typical position player would need 55-65 spring plate appearances before the season, but Boston doesn't have any history with Castillo.

Fantasy Tip: Castillo's injury has opened up the door for Mookie Betts to be the favorite for the starting center field job on opening day. As a result, Bett's fantasy stock is rising, perhaps to overvalued levels in the middle rounds, while owners should make sure to temper their bids on Castillo as a fantasy baseball commodity with plenty of power upside.

Red Sox | Rusney Castillo progressing well

Fri, 06 Mar 2015 13:19:29 -0800

Boston Red Sox OF Rusney Castillo (oblique) is making progress from his oblique injury, and he will begin throwing Saturday, March 7, according to head coach John Farrell.

Fantasy Tip: The likelihood of Castillo, Mookie Betts and Shane Victorino eating into each other's fantasy value continues to grow. It might be best to temper expectations for all three until the playing time projections are less murky. Still, Castillo went 8-for-13 with five runs, four RBI, a double, two home runs, and he stole a pair of bases over his final four games of 2014, so the upside is huge. Continue to check back for updates on his recovery throughout spring, and continue to target him in the middle rounds on draft day.

Red Sox | Mookie Betts leading candidate for CF

Thu, 05 Mar 2015 09:10:06 -0800

Boston Red Sox OF Mookie Betts is now the leading candidate for the starting center field job with OF Rusney Castillo (oblique) dealing with a strained left oblique. It seems like a certainty that Betts will start the year as the center fielder. There is no timetable for Castillo's return and the likely best-case-scenario will that Castillo will be given more time to prepare for the regular season. Betts spent much of the offseason trying to get stronger, and he said he now weighs 180 pounds after being listed at 160.

Fantasy Tip: With the injury to Castillo, we're likely to see Betts' stock rise in standard 12-team leagues. He's likely to hit leadoff, too, further making him an intriguing sleeper candidate in the late middle rounds, mainly for his speed.
