Red Sox | Boston outfield set

Tue, 26 Jan 2016 14:04:58 -0800

Boston Red Sox OFs Mookie Betts, Rusney Castillo and Jackie Bradley Jr. are set to be the starting outfielders in 2016, with Bradley in center field, Castillo in left and Betts in right. OF Chris Young is expected to start against left-handed pitchers and mix in regularly against righties.

Fantasy Tip: After the breakout year that Betts had in 2015, he's unlikely to make it past the second round of fantasy drafts. Young is expected to platoon with Bradley the most, so those two are more of targets in deep mixed leagues. Castillo is the wild card. He has plenty of talent but only had five homers in 80 games last year. A cheap investment there could yield plenty of value.

Red Sox | Rusney Castillo working on swing

Sat, 23 Jan 2016 14:39:09 -0800

Boston Red Sox OF Rusney Castillo said he has shortened his swing to help cope with "big-league velocity."

Fantasy Tip: For all the potential and raw skills, there are still a lot of holes in Castillo's game. He was successful in just four of his nine steal attempts, and his .253/.288/.359 slash line last season was extremely underwhelming. He is projected to start in left field in 2016, but lefty-killer Chris Young could cut into his playing time, which is concerning. Still, view Castillo as a an excellent late-round gamble leading into the season given the upside he has flashed in spurts.

Red Sox | Rusney Castillo to play winter ball

Thu, 31 Dec 2015 18:28:29 -0800

Boston Red Sox OF Rusney Castillo will participate in the Puerto Rican winter league playoffs for Criollos de Caguas beginning Monday, Jan. 4.

Fantasy Tip: This marks the second consecutive year where Castillo will participate in winter ball, although he wasn't originally expected to do so this offseason. He is slated to begin 2016 as Boston's starting left fielder, after hitting .253 with five home runs and 29 RBIs in 80 games last season. He should be selected in the middle rounds of AL-only leagues and the later rounds of deep mixed leagues.

Red Sox | Rusney Castillo back from injury

Thu, 01 Oct 2015 12:48:17 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Rusney Castillo (quadriceps) is starting in right field and batting fifth against New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia Thursday, Oct. 1. OF Brock Holt is not in the starting lineup Thursday.

Fantasy Tip: Castillo ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) posted an uninspiring .225/.263/.292 slash line over 23 games in September, and he missed three games with the quad injury, so he doesn't stand as a strong FantasyScore option Thursday. View the outfielder as a potential contrarian flier.

Red Sox | Brock Holt starting in right field

Wed, 30 Sep 2015 13:26:53 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Brock Holt is starting in right field and batting sixth against New York Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka Wednesday, Sept. 30. OF Rusney Castillo (quadriceps) is not in the starting lineup Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Holt ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) owns a respectable .294/.355/.368 slash line in September, and he checks out as a high-floor, low-ceiling FantasyScore option Wednesday. Although, it isn't a great matchup against Tanaka ($8,400, 16.8% of cap). Castillo ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) is battling a right quadriceps injury, and given he has a .555 OPS in September, he likely isn't worth holding out hope for in the majority of seasonal leagues.

Red Sox | Rusney Castillo out of Tuesday lineup

Tue, 29 Sep 2015 12:32:08 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Rusney Castillo (quadriceps) is not starting Tuesday, Sept. 29, against the New York Yankees. OF Jackie Bradley Jr. replaces Castillo and bats ninth against Yankees SP Michael Pineda.

Fantasy Tip: Castillo ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) still feels the effects of a minor quad strain, according to sources, so he will take a seat again. Bradley ($5,200, 10.4% of cap) is 2-for-4 against Pineda but has a .150 average in the last week, so in the end you should leave him on the bench.

Red Sox | Rusney Castillo has quad strain

Mon, 28 Sep 2015 14:42:19 -0700

Updating a previous report, Boston Red Sox OF Rusney Castillo (quadriceps) is day-to-day with a right quadriceps strain, which is why he is not in the starting lineup Monday, Sept. 28.

Fantasy Tip: Expect Castillo ($4,200) to make a few more starts this season, but now that he is dealing with an injury, there is even less to like about him over the final week. He has a .225/.263/.292 slash line over 23 games in September. Expect Brock Holt ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) to receive more playing time with Castillo out.

Red Sox | Rusney Castillo out against Yankees

Mon, 28 Sep 2015 12:38:47 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Rusney Castillo is not in the starting lineup Monday, Sept. 28. OF Brock Holt draws into the lineup and is batting fifth against New York Yankees SP Ivan Nova Monday.

Fantasy Tip: Castillo ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) has been struggling this month with a .555 OPS in September over 23 games. Holt ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) enters Monday with a .368 on-base percentage in September, which makes him a decent value play at FantasyScore, just keep your expectations in check. He is more of a high-floor guy than high-upside option.

Red Sox | Rusney Castillo draws out vs. O's

Fri, 25 Sep 2015 12:11:14 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Rusney Castillo is not in the starting lineup Friday, Sept. 25. OF Brock Holt is starting in left field and batting seventh against Baltimore Orioles SP Kevin Gausman Friday.

Fantasy Tip: While Castillo ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) is mired in a 5-for-41 funk, it is nothing more than a typical day off for him Friday. Holt ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) checks out as a low-upside play at FantasyScore Friday. His .337 slugging percentage in the second half leaves a lot to be desired for fantasy purposes.

Red Sox | Brock Holt in LF Tuesday

Tue, 08 Sep 2015 13:55:54 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Brock Holt is starting in left field and is hitting seventh against Toronto Blue Jays SP R.A. Dickey Tuesday, Sept. 8. OF Rusney Castillo will start on the bench.

Fantasy Tip: Now that Dustin Pedroia is back from the DL, it'll be hard for Holt ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) to crack the starting lineup every day. He's harder to rely on now in deep mixed leagues. Tonight against Dickey, any Red Sox hitter is a fine stack option on FantasyScore, including Holt.
