Browns | Travis Coons wins job

Tue, 01 Sep 2015 19:53:19 -0700

Cleveland Browns PK Travis Coons edged out PK Carey Spear, winning the battle for the placekicking job. "Yeah, it was close. I thought both guys handled themselves very well, very professionally," head coach Mike Pettine said Tuesday, Sept. 1.

Fantasy Tip: Coons was kept because he has a slightly stronger leg. For fantasy purposes, he isn't worth using in most standard formats, but occasionally he might be ideal for FantasyScore players if the price is right and the matchup favorable.

Browns | Cleveland has close kicker competition

Mon, 24 Aug 2015 14:13:02 -0700

Cleveland Browns PKs Travis Coons and Carey Spear have been competing for the kicker job during training camp and the preseason, but they are neck and neck at this point, according to special teams coordinator Chris Tabor. Tabor has not ruled out the team signing a veteran kicker but does not believe there is a need at this point.

Fantasy Tip: The team likely will use the final two preseason games to determine a winner of the competition. Neither kicker has played in a regular season game, and the winning kicker should not be a fantasy option.

Browns | Cleveland to have PK competition

Mon, 11 May 2015 10:16:37 -0700

Cleveland Browns PKs Travis Coons and Carey Spear will compete for the kicker job this offseason, and the competition is wide open at this point, according to special teams coordinator Chris Tabor.

Fantasy Tip: Neither player has a lot of NFL experience, so it appears to be an even competition at this point. Coons and Spear likely will not be selected in fantasy leagues next season if they will the job.

Titans | Travis Coons shows well

Fri, 15 Aug 2014 21:49:06 -0700

Tennessee Titans PK Travis Coons impressed head coach Ken Whisenhunt by nailing a 50-yard field goal in the preseason game Friday, Aug. 15, against the New Orleans Saints just moments after he had a 45-yard make negated by a penalty. "Not only was it a 50-yard (kick), but he had already made a 45-yarder," Whisenhunt said. "To have to come back and re-kick it and make it speaks a whole lot about what you are looking for in that position."

Fantasy Tip: Coons looks like he has a leg up, pun totally intended, in the battle with Maikon Bonani for the starting placekicker duties. The winner of this job will likely only be worth a look as a bye-week replacement in most fantasy leagues.
