Marlins | Justin Bour drives in five

Fri, 29 Apr 2016 20:59:47 -0700

Miami Marlins 1B Justin Bour went 3-for-4 with two home runs, a double, five RBI and two runs scored in a 6-3 win over the Milwaukee Brewers Friday, April 29.

Fantasy Tip: Bour's status as a platoon player makes him tough to own in season-long formats, and he is a shot-in-the-dark play against right-handed pitchers in DFS formats.

Marlins | Justin Bour out again

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 15:18:47 -0700

Miami Marlins 1B Justin Bour is not in the starting lineup against Los Angeles Dodgers left-handed SP Scott Kazmir Wednesday, April 27. 1B Chris Johnson is starting at first base and is hitting seventh.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson is likely to continue platooning with Bour at first base, which will limit Bour's fantasy upside in deep mixed and NL-only leagues. Johnson has hit over .300 in his career against lefties, but his power isn't as prominent against southpaws. Regardless, he's worth a look against Kazmir tonight as a low-priced first base option in DFS action.

Marlins | Justin Bour out, Chris Johnson in

Tue, 26 Apr 2016 15:38:29 -0700

Miami Marlins 3B Chris Johnson is in the starting lineup at first base and batting seventh Tuesday, April 26, versus Los Angeles Dodgers SP Clayton Kershaw. 1B Justin Bour is getting the night off.

Fantasy Tip: Notably, it's just his second start of the season. Johnson can be useful at times based on the matchup when he's aligned opposite a left-handed pitcher, but tonight would not be a good situation to try him out, having to square off with the greatest the game has to offer. Bour, meanwhile, has underachieved so far after a very encouraging showing in 2015.

Marlins | Justin Bour could platoon

Wed, 30 Mar 2016 11:27:29 -0700

Miami Marlins 1B Justin Bour is still a candidate to enter into a platoon at first base since he's just 2-for-16 (.125) with an RBI, a walk and three strikeouts against lefties this spring. Bour had a .270/.326/.519 slash line with 23 home runs and 64 RBI against right-handers in 2015. 3B Chris Johnson would likely platoon with Bour.

Fantasy Tip: Bour is maybe worth speculating on at the end of deep mixed leagues for his power, but with his playing time in question and a fortunate HR/FB rate that drove his home run output last year, he could be due for regression. A lack of plate control and struggles against lefties likely cements his platoon role.

Marlins | Justin Bour or Martin Prado could bat fifth

Fri, 25 Mar 2016 17:19:02 -0700

Miami Marlins manager Don Mattingly is uncertain whether 1B Justin Bour or 3B Martin Prado will serve as the No. 5 hitter in the lineup behind OF Giancarlo Stanton. The lefty-hitting Bour has more power than the righty-hitting Prado, although Mattingly is concerned that opposing managers would bring situational lefties into the game during the later innings after pitching around Stanton. This would then force Mattingly to use a pinch hitter or require Bour to face a left-handed reliever.

Fantasy Tip: Bour only hit .221 in 68 at-bats versus left-handed pitching in 2015 and the possibility exists that he could platoon with INF Chris Johnson at first base if his struggles with southpaws continue. Bour should be viewed as a decent source of power for the later rounds of drafts in mixed fantasy leagues while Prado is a low-end option at third base who is capable of posting a respectable batting average but unspectacular numbers in most of the other offensive categories.

Marlins | Justin Bour more agile

Fri, 04 Mar 2016 10:04:25 -0800

Miami Marlins 1B Justin Bour dropped 23 pounds in the offseason, and his weight loss is expected to improve his mobility at first base. "By adding greens, taking bread off a chicken sandwich, staying away from sodas. Did cardio every other day. I plan on having a big year," Bour said.

Fantasy Tip: Most people might be surprised that Bour hit 23 home runs and drove in 73 runs for Miami last year, but his power was fueled by fortunate HR/FB rates, and he hits too many grounders to sustain it. He's too inconsistent to keep up a full-time role most likely, too. However, he can be a nice power source late in deep mixed drafts.

Marlins | Justin Bour in prime lineup spot

Tue, 01 Mar 2016 13:31:20 -0800

Miami Marlins 1B Justin Bour is expected to hit behind OF Giancarlo Stanton this year at fifth in the batting order. Bour hit 23 home runs last year and had a slash line of .302/.369/.612 with nine home runs, nine doubles and 57 RBI with runners in scoring position. "This guy can hit," manager Don Mattingly said. "To me, that's what we look for, a guy who is a threat back there who can drive in runs. If they don't want to pitch to Big G, they're going to have to go through him."

Fantasy Tip: Bour definitely has power that should attract fantasy owners, but beware that his power gains were driven by a fortunate home-run-to-fly-ball ratio in 2015. He also has questionable plate discipline and struggles against lefties, which could create a platoon scenario. Regression is entirely possible, but he's not a bad power target in the late rounds.

Marlins | Justin Bour unlikely to platoon

Wed, 17 Feb 2016 18:36:23 -0800

Miami Marlins manager Don Mattingly views 1B Justin Bour as his everyday first baseman and is unlikely to use a strict platoon at the position, even though Bour struggled versus lefties last season. "I love his swing and what he's capable of," Mattingly said. "I don't think we should limit him and say, 'This guy can't hit lefties.'" INF Chris Johnson is likely to be used at first base on days when Bour is out of the starting lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Bour hit .262 with 23 home runs and 73 RBIs in 409 at-bats last season, with a .270 mark in 341 at-bats versus right-handers and a .221 mark with no home runs in 68 at-bats against lefties. He's a midrange first base option who should be selected in the middle rounds of drafts for mixed fantasy leagues.

Marlins | Chris Johnson signs with Miami

Tue, 12 Jan 2016 10:43:42 -0800

Free-agent 3B Chris Johnson (Indians) signed an undisclosed deal with the Miami Marlins Tuesday, Jan. 12. He can spell 1B Justin Bour at first base against left-handed pitchers.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson is a contact hitter, so he has the ability to hit for a decent average, but he doesn't bring much else to the table. In a platoon role for the Marlins at the corner infield spots, Johnson might be attractive as infield depth in NL-only leagues.
