Browns | Josh McCown not guaranteed of job

Mon, 27 Jul 2015 19:30:14 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown enters training camp as the team's starting signal caller, but head coach Mike Pettine said Monday, July 27, that McCown is not guaranteed of the job. "The repetitions will (still) be handled that way, with Josh as the one," Pettine said. "Now, I wouldn't say I'm guaranteeing today that Josh McCown is going to be the starter against the Jets (in Week 1)."

Fantasy Tip: The winner of the Cleveland quarterback job is still only worth considering as a low-end QB2 in standard fantasy leagues, useful only when your primary starter has a difficult matchup or bye.

Browns | Josh McCown praised by coach and GM

Sat, 06 Jun 2015 18:52:59 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown was praised for his mentorship of younger players by general manager Ray Farmer, and head coach Mike Pettine said the team couldn't do better than McCown until they find a "long-term solution" under center.

Fantasy Tip: Pettine is probably exaggerating just a bit, but the comments reinforce the fact that McCown is all but a lock to open the year as the starter ahead of Johnny Manziel. Still, McCown's own limitations and Cleveland's run-first philosophy will make it tough for him to be more than a low-end QB2.

Browns | Josh McCown likes his situation

Sun, 31 May 2015 17:01:22 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown said the lack of quarterback competition helps the team overall. "More than anything, for me, I just believe it takes away from any kind of distraction that you can have and the team can just move in one direction, regardless of who that guy is,'' McCown said. "It's helpful to just say, 'this is our guy until something happens and he's not our guy.'"

Fantasy Tip: McCown is set to open the season as the starter, but a conservative offensive game plan and minimal weapons to throw to make him a low-end QB2 with little upside.

Browns | Josh McCown may not face competition

Fri, 29 May 2015 11:14:01 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown appears to have been anointed the starting quarterback, and it does not look like he will be facing any competition during training camp. The team is looking for a quarterback that is willing to play within the offense and not do anything daring to make a play on their own.

Fantasy Tip: McCown likely will be the starter since he is more careful with the ball and does not try to make big plays on his own. McCown will have some weapons to work with on offense but should not be more than a No. 2 fantasy quarterback in deeper leagues.

Browns | Josh McCown appears set

Fri, 29 May 2015 06:42:30 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown appears firmly entrenched as the starting quarterback as the team's goal is to control the ball on the ground and have the quarterback manage the game.

Fantasy Tip: McCown has minimal value as a low-end QB2, but it appears Johnny Manziel has virtually no chance to win the starting job barring injury.

Browns | Josh McCown showing leadership

Tue, 12 May 2015 14:01:24 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown has taken control of the Cleveland offense and the locker room, according to new offensive coordinator John DeFilippo. Head coach Mike Pettine has already said that McCown's experience has given him the advantage for the starting quarterback position.

Fantasy Tip: McCown isn't necessarily a lock for starting quarterback, but he seems to be well on his way to being under center in Week 1. His supporting cast is lackluster, however, as far as pass-catchers are concerned. He's comfortably in the backup fantasy quarterback conversation.

Browns | Josh McCown declared starter

Sun, 10 May 2015 13:48:28 -0700

Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine has declared that QB Josh McCown will enter the 2015 season as the No. 1 quarterback on the team's depth chart. "We're not going to start talking competition," Pettine said. "Josh will more than likely be the starter going into camp, and in the foreseeable future I don't see that changing."

Fantasy Tip: McCown had long been favored to win the starting job but he is nothing more than a low-end QB2 option for fantasy owners with Cleveland's anemic offense. One of the reasons why Pettine might have named his starter so soon is to allow Johnny Manziel, who recently spent 10 weeks in a rehab facility, to focus on readjusting to life in the NFL instead of worrying about competing for the starting job.

Browns | Josh McCown commanding offense

Sat, 09 May 2015 19:22:11 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown has "taken command" of the offense, offensive coordinator John DeFilippo said Saturday, May 9.

Fantasy Tip: McCown has been the favorite to win the starting gig, and DeFilippo's comments do little to change that notion. Even as the starter, McCown is a low-end QB2 option at the helm of a lackluster Cleveland offense.

Browns | Josh McCown the favorite to start for Browns

Tue, 05 May 2015 09:18:04 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown is the favorite to start training camp as the team's starting quarterback, with head coach Mike Pettine saying "it's fair to say." QB Johnny Manziel struggled last year as a rookie and was in rehab for 10 weeks. McCown is the most experienced quarterback the team has on roster.

Fantasy Tip: McCown will still face competition from Manziel and the other quarterbacks on roster later this summer, but McCown will have the leg up. With a mediocre receiving corps and largely unproven backfield, McCown, if he winds up winning the job, is a lackluster QB2 option for fantasy owners.

Browns | QB still an issue in Cleveland?

Mon, 04 May 2015 14:42:10 -0700

Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine doesn't seem overly concerned with the Browns' current state at quarterback. Pettine said the quarterback position isn't the only position that wins football games. QBs Josh McCown, Johnny Manziel, Thaddeus Lewis and Connor Shaw are currently on Cleveland's roster.

Fantasy Tip: Pettine could very well start McCown or one of the other current quarterbacks for Week 1. The Browns seem to catching some flak for not drafting a quarterback, but Pettine doesn't seem phased by it. Whoever starts will be a fantasy backup.

Browns | Cleveland fine with Josh McCown as QB

Mon, 09 Mar 2015 15:33:40 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown could be the team's starting quarterback in 2015, because head coach Mike Pettine said he would be comfortable with McCown as the starter.

Fantasy Tip: McCown may be considered the leading candidate for the starting job at this point, but he will have to compete with Johnny Manziel for the job during training camp. McCown would be a No. 2 fantasy quarterback next season if becomes the starter.

Browns | Josh McCown expects to start

Mon, 02 Mar 2015 10:44:47 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown is expecting to start after signing a three-year, $14 million deal last week that includes $6.25 million in guarantees and $6 million in incentives. McCown went just 1-10 as the starter for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last year. McCown will compete with QBs Johnny Manziel and Connor Shaw this summer.

Fantasy Tip: As of right now, McCown looks like the most likely candidate to start for the Browns, with Manziel in a treatment facility for personal issues. If McCown wins the job in training camp, though he shouldn't be considered anything more than a weak QB2 for fantasy owners.

Browns | Josh McCown to work with Johnny Manziel

Mon, 02 Mar 2015 04:18:25 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown will work with QB Johnny Manziel to help him get used to the NFL.

Fantasy Tip: McCown is obviously not the long-term solution in Cleveland, but he provides a bit of stability. His vow to work with Manziel also means the Browns have some faith in their troubled quarterback. McCown is a backup QB in most fantasy leagues, while Manziel remains an intriguing project with little fantasy value at the moment.

Browns | Josh McCown guaranteed $6.25 million

Sat, 28 Feb 2015 14:33:06 -0800

Updating previous reports, Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown has $6.25 million in guarantees in his three-year deal, and he'll make $5.25 million in 2015. The value of his deal is $14 million with the chance to make $20 million, according to a source that has seen the contract.

Fantasy Tip: McCown would be a low-end QB2 if he wins the starting job.

Browns | Josh McCown contract details

Fri, 27 Feb 2015 19:19:56 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown's three-year deal is worth roughly $15 million, according to a source.

Browns | Three-year deal for Josh McCown

Fri, 27 Feb 2015 16:37:32 -0800

Updating a previous report, Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown signed a three-year deal Friday, Feb. 27, according to a source. Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed. McCown completed 184 of 327 passes for 2,206 yards, 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2014. McCown has a good relationship with offensive coordinator John DeFilippo from their days with the Oakland Raiders.

Fantasy Tip: The signing of McCown likely means Brian Hoyer will move on and try to land a job elsewhere. McCown will likely compete for the starting quarterback job with Johnny Manziel in training camp. If McCown wins the job, he offers very little upside, despite having succeeded in the NFL before. He's nothing more than a weak QB2 selection if he's starting.

Free-agent QB Josh McCown (Buccaneers) has signed with the Cleveland Browns, according to his agent. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Fantasy Tip: McCown likely will have the chance to compete for the starting quarterback job during training camp. McCown likely would be a No. 2 fantasy quarterback next season if he wins the starting job.

Browns | Browns in talks with Josh McCown

Thu, 26 Feb 2015 20:32:53 -0800

Free-agent QB Josh McCown (Buccaneers) has had contract talks with the Cleveland Browns in addition to the Buffalo Bills, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: He would likely have a chance to compete for the starting job in Cleveland, but unless the Browns upgrade their weapons in the passing game significantly this offseason, McCown wouldn't have much fantasy value as the starter.

Bills | Buffalo looking to land Josh McCown

Thu, 26 Feb 2015 08:06:04 -0800

Free-agent QB Josh McCown (Buccaneers) is having contract negotiations with the Buffalo Bills, but it is not known if the Bills are the leading candidate to sign McCown, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: McCown could compete with EJ Manuel for the starting job if he joins the Bills. McCown probably would only be considered a No. 2 quarterback in fantasy drafts next season if he won the starting job.

NFL | Josh McCown to decide by next week

Thu, 26 Feb 2015 04:38:20 -0800

Free-agent QB Josh McCown (Buccaneers) is expected to decide on a new team by early next week. The Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns are considered strong suitors.

Fantasy Tip: McCown could start in Buffalo, but Cleveland is a situation where he could end up throwing until Johnny Manziel is truly ready. Wait and see where he lands. For now, McCown is a QB2 option who could drop to QB3.

Tue, 24 Feb 2015 14:26:43 -0800

Free-agent QB Josh McCown (Buccaneers) is visiting the Cleveland Browns Tuesday, Feb. 24, and Wednesday, Feb. 25.

Fantasy Tip: Even if McCown ends up signing with Cleveland and winning the starting job, he's still not worth starting on fantasy squads, especially when he would be without the services of suspended WR Josh Gordon.

Jets | Hope to turn Geno Smith into winner

Wed, 18 Feb 2015 20:16:55 -0800

New York Jets QB Geno Smith might soon have company despite the fact general manager Mike Maccagnan said the team is "committed" to trying to turn Smith into a winning quarterback. The team met with free-agent QB Josh McCown (Buccaneers) Wednesday, Feb. 18.

Fantasy Tip: Smith has been mostly a disaster in his first two seasons, and he is certainly not a quarterback fantasy owners can pin their hopes to. Smith likely would need to take a giant leap forward to be the starter in Week 1 of the 2015 season.

Jets | Josh McCown meets with Jets

Wed, 18 Feb 2015 15:40:24 -0800

Free-agent QB Josh McCown (Buccaneers) met with the New York Jets Wednesday, Feb. 18, at the NFL Scouting Combine. The Jets have said they are not ready to give up on QB Geno Smith, but are also exploring options at the position, including interviewing QBs Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota this week.

Fantasy Tip: Again, no matter where McCown signs, he won't have a ton of fantasy value. He may not even be the starting quarterback at his next location. McCown is firmly in fantasy backup quarterback territory.

Browns | Josh McCown an option for Browns

Wed, 18 Feb 2015 12:36:33 -0800

Free-agent QB Josh McCown (Buccaneers) is an option at quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, according to head coach Mike Pettine, though Cleveland has not scheduled a visit with him yet.

Fantasy Tip: Signing McCown would certainly complicate the quarterback position for the Browns, though Brian Hoyer could become a free agent. Even if McCown does sign, he's not a viable starting fantasy quarterback in seasonal or daily leagues.

Bills | Josh McCown leaves without deal

Mon, 16 Feb 2015 11:22:09 -0800

Free-agent QB Josh McCown (Buccaneers) visited the Buffalo Bills Monday, Feb. 16, but did not leave with a deal. McCown still has future visits scheduled, so a deal could still get done.

Fantasy Tip: McCown still wouldn't have a ton of fantasy value if he does sign with the Bills. He wasn't a worthy starting fantasy quarterback with the likes of Vincent Jackson and Mike Evans, so it's hard to imagine him being more successful with Sammy Watkins as his best receiving option.

Mon, 16 Feb 2015 05:42:23 -0800

NFL | Josh McCown laments release

Thu, 12 Feb 2015 15:51:13 -0800

Free-agent QB Josh McCown (Buccaneers) said he wishes he could have been better in light of his release from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Wednesday, Feb. 11. "I just hated that I wasn't good enough in this situation with the hand we were dealt to kind of pull us up out of it," McCown said. McCown has already reportedly drawn interest from several teams.

Fantasy Tip: Even if McCown signs and starts with a team in 2015, he still won't be starting material from a fantasy perspective. Draft him strictly as a backup or bye-week replacement.

Jets | Josh McCown on the Jets radar?

Thu, 12 Feb 2015 10:36:36 -0800

Free-agent QB Josh McCown (Buccaneers) may be an attractive depth target for the New York Jets to compete with QB Geno Smith for the starting job, in the opinion of New York Post writer Bart Hubbuch. It is unclear if the Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan and head coach Todd Bowles are as high on McCown as former Jets general manager John Idzik and former head coach Rex Ryan.

Fantasy Tip: Even if McCown ends up with the Jets, he will still need to compete with Smith for the starting position. If McCown earns the starting job, he is no better than a weak QB2 in 2015.

NFL | Josh McCown getting interest

Thu, 12 Feb 2015 09:45:27 -0800

Free-agent QB Josh McCown (Buccaneers) is receiving interest from six teams after getting cut by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Wednesday, Feb. 11.

Fantasy Tip: McCown should not have too much of a problem finding his next opportunity, but he seems more suited to fit into a backup role moving forward. Even if he does find a starting job, he probably should not be considered for fantasy rosters.

Buccaneers | Josh McCown released by Bucs

Wed, 11 Feb 2015 14:39:37 -0800

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Josh McCown was released Wednesday, Feb. 11.

Fantasy Tip: As of now, Mike Glennon is the only other quarterback on Tampa's roster. Glennon isn't expected to be in the team's long-term plans, so it seems as though the Bucs are set on drafting a QB with the No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft. That makes Jameis Winston or Marcus Mariota their likely targets.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QBs Mike Glennon and Josh McCown are options to start in Week 10, but head coach Lovie Smith said he will not decide on the starter until later it the week. Smith said there are a lot of factors he needs to consider before naming the starter.
