Wed, 12 Mar 2014 14:13:12 -0700

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Lovie Smith said that QB Josh McCown is his quarterback moving forward.

Fantasy Tip: With McCown named the starter, he does have some low-end QB1 value in the right situations, but should only be used as a spot starter based on match ups or a bye-week fill in at this point.

Buccaneers | Josh McCown agrees

Wed, 12 Mar 2014 11:21:51 -0700

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers agreed to terms on a two-year deal with free-agent QB Josh McCown (Bears) Wednesday, March 11, according to his agent. Financial terms were not given.

Fantasy Tip: Reports earlier this offseason suggested that the Lovie Smith regime wasn't that high on Mike Glennon under center. This signing reinfornces that idea. Expect McCown and Glennon to compete for starting duties this fall. McCown, if named the starter, represents low-end QB1 value in the right matchups, but he'd be better served as your fantasy backup.

Wed, 11 Dec 2013 11:30:08 -0800

The Chicago Bears plan to put QB Jay Cutler (ankle) through a full-speed workout Wednesday, Dec. 11, before making a decision on whether he will start over QB Josh McCown in Week 15 against the Cleveland Browns. "We'll have receivers there afterwards. We'll work him through drops, redirect him in the pocket, move him up and down and get as much suddenness out of him as we can," head coach Marc Trestman said. "He's gone through the first steps (of being cleared to play) other than this workout. He's been cleared from a standpoint of allowing us to work him at full speed."

Wed, 11 Dec 2013 10:43:29 -0800

Fantasy Tip: Owners will have to wait a day or two before finding out who will start. Cutler likely would be a low-end No. 1 quarterback if he is able to return to the lineup. Josh McCown should be considered a solid No. 1 quarterback if he keeps the job.

Bears | Jay Cutler not cleared

Wed, 04 Dec 2013 11:13:10 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (ankle) has yet to be cleared to return to practice Thursday, Dec. 5.

Fantasy Tip: All signs point to another start for Josh McCown. The way he's played, the Bears don't really have a reason to rush Cutler back. Cutler may return in Week 15, but don't put your chips on it.

Bears | Jay Cutler week-to-week

Tue, 03 Dec 2013 14:49:58 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (ankle) said he's been feeling better, but head coach Marc Trestman is still referring to him as "week-to-week." Cutler was hoping to return in Week 14 against the Dallas Cowboys. "Getting better," Cutler said. "Still got to talk to the doctors, gotta go through some stuff this week. I don't know. I think if we're gonna have any shot at playing, I'm gonna have to practice (this week). I still feel like I'm gonna get back here really soon. I want to play. It's just the trainers and doctors and going through the scenario we've got to go through." Cutler said he ran on a treadmill and felt fine Monday, Dec. 2.

Fantasy Tip: Don't count on Cutler being ready for Monday Night Football. Josh McCown has looked just fine in Cutler's absence and has a nice matchup on hand against the Cowboys, making him a midrange QB1 play.

Bears | Jay Cutler hopes to play

Mon, 02 Dec 2013 12:20:36 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (ankle) said he hopes to play Week 14 but has not been cleared to play at this point.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will have to monitor Cutler's practice participation this week to see if he has any chance to play. If he is able to play, he would be a risky low-end No. 1 quarterback because he is coming back from injury. Josh McCown would get another start if Cutler remains out and should be considered a solid No. 1 quarterback option.

Bears | Jay Cutler week-to-week

Mon, 11 Nov 2013 11:28:37 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (ankle, groin) is considered week-to-week because of the high ankle sprain he suffered in the team's Week 10 game.

Fantasy Tip: It looks like Josh McCown will start at least this week against the Baltimore Ravens and could get a few more starts depending on Cutler's recovery. McCown should be considered a borderline starting quarterback for desperate owners or as a fill in for bye-week starters.

Mon, 21 Oct 2013 10:31:56 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (groin) will miss at least four weeks because of a torn groin muscle.

Bears | Jay Cutler may have serious injury

Mon, 21 Oct 2013 10:19:37 -0700

The Chicago Bears are awaiting the MRI results on Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (groin) Monday, Oct. 21, and they are bracing themselves for bad news. Cutler could be out for most of the remaining 10 weeks of the season if it's a serious groin injury. QB Josh McCown would take over for Cutler if he has to miss any time. The Bears would likely re-sign QB Jordan Palmer to back up McCown.

Fantasy Tip: If you own Cutler, starting making plans to add another quarterback. Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery, as well as Martellus Bennett, will likely suffer if Cutler misses most of the rest of the year.

Bears | Josh McCown sharp in emergency duty

Sun, 20 Oct 2013 15:07:09 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Josh McCown completed 14 of his 20 pass attempts for 204 yards and a touchdown in Week 7 against the Washington Redskins. He also ran four times for 33 yards, taking over in the first half for the injured QB Jay Cutler (groin).

Fantasy Tip: McCown might get the starting nod in Week 9 when the team returns from its bye, assuming Cutler is forced to miss multiple weeks due to his injury. McCown would only be worth a look as a low-end QB2 in deeper fantasy formats that require at least two starting signal callers.

Bears | Jay Cutler and Mike Tice had ugly relationship

Fri, 07 Jun 2013 10:20:53 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler and offensive coordinator Mike Tice were on such bad terms last season that QB Josh McCown had to act as a liason between the two. Tice is no longer with the team. "I was just talking to McCown this morning and one of the things we said is it's so cool to come to work where it's not one of those things where it's dreadful," WR Brandon Marshall said this week.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler's bad attitude has gotten in the way of his pure talent before. With a coaching staff that should cater to his needs, Cutler could be in line for a fine season with the best receiving options he's had at his disposal since coming to Chicago. It isn't wise to count on him for anything more than a capable backup option, however.
