Browns | Josh McCown to miss several weeks

Sun, 25 Sep 2016 07:10:33 -0700

Updating previous reports, Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown (shoulder) is expected to need two to four weeks to recover from a broken collarbone in his non-throwing shoulder. He wanted to harness the left shoulder and continue playing but the team denied his request.

Fantasy Tip: QB Cody Kessler will serve as the team's interim starter, with QB Charlie Whitehurst backing him up. Both players possess little fantasy value, although Kessler could be useful as a bench player in cavernous seasonal leagues.

Browns | Josh McCown won't be placed on IR

Mon, 19 Sep 2016 19:03:59 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown (shoulder) will not be placed on the Reserve/Injured list, so the team expects him to return at some point this season.

Fantasy Tip: While he might be back at some point, he is obviously not someone you want wasting a reserve roster spot in any fantasy format.

Browns | Cleveland on fifth QB in five games

Mon, 19 Sep 2016 17:31:36 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Cody Kessler will be the fifth starting quarterback in as many games for the Browns. Going back to the last two weeks of last season, the Browns have started former QBs Johnny Manziel and Austin Davis and QBs Robert Griffin III (shoulder), Josh McCown (shoulder) and now Kessler. Cleveland is the second team since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970 to start five different quarterbacks in five straight games, according to Elias.

Fantasy Tip: This is just further proof that the Browns' quarterback position cannot be trusted. The lack of consistency will be a damper to Josh Gordon's fantasy value when he does return, and it hurts the rest of the team, too. Corey Coleman, Gary Barnidge, Isaiah Crowell and Duke Johnson are still startable, but they're unlikely to reach their ceiling with an unproven rookie quarterback at the helm.

Browns | Fear of serious injury for Josh McCown

Sun, 18 Sep 2016 16:57:14 -0700

Updating a previous report, Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown (shoulder) suffered a shoulder injury in Week 2 against the Baltimore Ravens, and the team is bracing themselves for bad news on McCown's shoulder. He will be re-evaluated Monday, Sept. 19.

Fantasy Tip: The Browns lost Robert Griffin III for the season in the first game, and now McCown might be down for the count. Whomever starts under center in Cleveland in Week 3 isn't worth using in fantasy leagues.

Browns | Josh McCown posts solid numbers

Sun, 18 Sep 2016 14:43:18 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown (shoulder) went 20-for-33 for 260 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 2.

Fantasy Tip: McCown is dealing with an injury to his non-throwing shoulder but expects to play in Week 3, so owners should monitor the situation. McCown was able to move the ball down the field and could be a starting option in daily fantasy leagues against favorable matchups.

Browns | Josh McCown back on the field

Sun, 18 Sep 2016 10:49:40 -0700

Updating a previous report, Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown (shoulder) has returned to the team's Week 2 game after missing some time because of a shoulder injury.

Fantasy Tip: McCown has thrown for two touchdowns in a little over a quarter in Week 2 and should help the team's passing game. McCown should be considered a No. 2 quarterback in most leagues but can start against favorable matchups.

Browns | Josh McCown dealing with injury

Sun, 18 Sep 2016 10:40:51 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown (shoulder) suffered a shoulder injury in Week 2 and is considered questionable to return.

Fantasy Tip: Cody Kessler is the Browns' backup and likely would be next in line to start if McCown missed any time, so owners should keep an eye on McCown's status. Kessler would be no more than a low-end No. 2 quarterback if he starts.

Browns | Gary Barnidge headed for big game?

Fri, 16 Sep 2016 21:45:58 -0700

Cleveland Browns TE Gary Barnidge faces the Baltimore Ravens in Week 2, and in two games against Baltimore last season, he caught a combined 15 passes for 230 yards and a touchdown. QB Josh McCown started both games.

Fantasy Tip: McCown will be under center this weekend, and while there is no guarantee they can recreate the magic, Barnidge should be treated as a TE1.

Browns | Josh McCown good against Ravens

Tue, 13 Sep 2016 07:39:55 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown has completed 63.3% of his passes for 885 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions against the Baltimore Ravens. He is 2-1 against them and threw in a rushing touchdown.

Fantasy Tip: McCown has good history against the Ravens, but that doesn't make him a particularly good fantasy play. He's a QB2 in multiple-quarterback leagues.

Browns | Cleveland won't trade for quarterback

Mon, 12 Sep 2016 15:03:07 -0700

Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson said the Browns will not trade for a quarterback despite QB Robert Griffin III (shoulder) being placed on the Reserve/Injured list. QB Josh McCown will start, with QB Cody Kessler likely serving as the backup. As stated earlier, Griffin will be reevaluated in three to four weeks.

Fantasy Tip: McCown held his own last year and looked Gary Barnidge's way frequently. The tight end's stock increases a little bit with McCown under center, but for the most part the Browns should function close to the same as with Griffin. McCown should not be viewed as a starting fantasy quarterback, however.

Browns | Asking price still high for Josh McCown

Wed, 31 Aug 2016 12:10:42 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown may be a trade target for the Minnesota Vikings, but the Browns likely will keep McCown unless the Vikings are willing to trade a high draft pick for him.

Fantasy Tip: McCown is probably one of several options the Vikings are considering, but it appears that he will be the backup for the Browns this season. McCown will not have any fantasy value unless he is starting for a team.

Browns | Cleveland wants pick for Josh McCown

Sun, 14 Aug 2016 09:04:56 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown is not expected to be traded unless the team receives at least a fourth-round draft choice in return. The Dallas Cowboys are not interested in offering more than a sixth-round pick for McCown.

Fantasy Tip: McCown will be a backup quarterback no matter where he plays this season and will not have fantasy value unless he becomes a starter.

Browns | Corey Coleman showing nose for end zone

Thu, 04 Aug 2016 19:57:44 -0700

Cleveland Browns WR Corey Coleman was praised for his ability to find the end zone by offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton, QB Josh McCown and QB Robert Griffin III.

Fantasy Tip: Coleman continues to draw tons of praise during training camp, and he should be drafted as a WR4 with upside in season-long leagues.

Cowboys | Josh McCown a focus of Dallas

Thu, 04 Aug 2016 06:00:28 -0700

Updating previous reports, Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown has become a target of the Dallas Cowboys.

Fantasy Tip: McCown will be a backup wherever he plays, and he has no fantasy value for now.

Browns | Cowboys looking at Josh McCown

Wed, 03 Aug 2016 17:11:02 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown has popped up on the Dallas Cowboys' radar as a possibility to replace injured backup QB Kellen Moore (ankle), who is slated to be out three to four months with a broken right fibula.

Fantasy Tip: Whether he ends up in Dallas or remains with Cleveland, McCown will be positioned behind an injury-prone quarterback, so he may have a chance to contribute at some point this season. Of course, an injury must take shape first, which is why owners don't need to worry about the 12-year veteran on draft day.

Cowboys | Josh McCown may be option for Cowboys

Wed, 03 Aug 2016 10:36:35 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown may be a trade target for the Dallas Cowboys since they are looking for a backup quarterback, in the opinion of ESPN's Ed Werder.

Fantasy Tip: McCown is not expected to win the starting quarterback job with the Browns, so he will be a backup no matter where he plays in 2016. Owners should avoid him since he will not have much value.

Browns | RG3 helped out by Josh McCown

Tue, 02 Aug 2016 20:25:38 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III has improved by "leaps and bounds" as a leader, partly due to veteran QB Josh McCown guiding him, head coach Hue Jackson said Tuesday, Aug. 2. "A lot of him getting better has to do with Josh McCown," Jackson said. "Josh McCown has really done a great job of spending time with him and mentoring him … to try and make the biggest jump that he can. Our quarterback room is a special place right now."

Fantasy Tip: Griffin has a long way to go before he is considered anything more than a backup fantasy option in most leagues. The only time RG3 should be starting is in fantasy formats which require two starting signal callers.

Browns | Robert Griffin works with starters

Fri, 29 Jul 2016 15:31:12 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III received all of the snaps with the first-team offense during practice Friday, July 29. QB Josh McCown worked with the second-team offense during practice.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin appears to the clear favorite to win the starting quarterback job. He will not have a lot of weapons to work with in the passing game this season and should be seen as a low-end No. 2 quarterback in most leagues.

Browns | Josh McCown was steady in spring

Wed, 27 Jul 2016 22:45:24 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown looked more ready in spring practices than QB Robert Griffin III, and he knows the offensive line well while having a rapport and timing down with some of the receivers. McCown posted a 93.3 quarterback rating in 2015, 14th in the NFL. However, the team isn't expected to build around a quarterback who is 37. He might be kept around as an insurance policy in case QB Cody Kessler isn't ready.

Fantasy Tip: McCown's outlook is up in the air, as RG3 is expected to start, although nothing is written in stone. Unless he is able to win the starting job, avoid him in all fantasy leagues. Even then he would only be worth a look as a No. 2 or 3 fantasy option in most leagues.

Browns | Josh McCown to miss final roster?

Sun, 03 Jul 2016 11:49:21 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown may not make the 53-man roster, according to ESPNCleveland.com's Tony Grossi.

Fantasy Tip: McCown could be released if the Browns do not trade him. Robert Griffin III is expected to start in Cleveland, so McCown can continue to be avoided in fantasy drafts.

Browns | Cleveland starter not close to official

Thu, 09 Jun 2016 16:42:39 -0700

Cleveland Browns QBs Robert Griffin III, Josh McCown and Cody Kessler will be part of an open competition in training camp, according to head coach Hue Jackson. Jackson said he is not even close to naming a starting quarterback at the close of minicamp.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin still figures to be the favorite to start, but anything can happen between now and late August. As has been said before, though, none of Cleveland's quarterbacks are QB1 material.

Browns | Josh McCown performing well

Fri, 20 May 2016 12:20:35 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown has performed well during organized team activities this week and appears to have a good grasp on the new offense.

Fantasy Tip: Robert Griffin III appears to be the leading candidate for the starting quarterback job, but McCown may receive the chance to compete for the job during training camp. McCown has had some success in the past but probably would be a low-end No. 2 option in deeper leagues if he starts.

Browns | Josh McCown could still be kept

Sat, 14 May 2016 12:32:36 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown could still stay with the Browns if he does not win the starting quarterback position, according to director of football operations Sashi Brown.

Fantasy Tip: Robert Griffin III is the favorite to start for Cleveland, with McCown and Cody Kessler vying for the backup spot. Griffin has more fantasy upside, but he should not be viewed as a QB1 candidate, assuming he does win the starting job.

Browns | Josh McCown staying with Browns?

Thu, 21 Apr 2016 14:54:46 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown seems to have a better chance of staying in Cleveland after Cleveland traded down from their No. 2 overall pick. "I don't know what's going to happen," McCown said. "I'm not going to worry about that. I'm just going to focus on what I've got to do today and go and work hard."

Fantasy Tip: That's the mentality of a veteran quarterback, albeit a veteran quarterback who will play a backup role this season behind Robert Griffin III. McCown could still be traded, of course, if the Browns draft Paxton Lynch with their No. 8 overall pick, or someone else later in the draft. He's not on the fantasy radar as of now.

Broncos | Josh McCown could land in Denver

Fri, 08 Apr 2016 10:16:03 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown could be an option for the Denver Broncos if the Broncos can't acquire San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick.

Fantasy Tip: McCown looked good early last season and would have a lot to work with in Denver. He's pretty limited from a fantasy perspective, though, and he'd be a backup regardless.

Browns | Josh McCown shows up for workouts

Mon, 04 Apr 2016 09:46:47 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown showed up for the start of offseason workouts with Cleveland Monday, April 4.

Fantasy Tip: This shouldn't come as a surprise, as McCown stated he would like to compete with Robert Griffin III and possibly an early round draft pick if he remains with the team. The problem is McCown is unlikely to remain with the Browns, and he could be an option for the Denver Broncos or New York Jets. Wherever he lands, he's nothing more than a fantasy backup if he wins a starting job.

Browns | Josh McCown wants to compete

Thu, 31 Mar 2016 10:30:36 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown, who is expected to be released or traded, said he would like to remain with the Browns and compete with QB Robert Griffin III. McCown also said he's open to sitting behind Griffin and helping him if that's what the organization chooses. "The Browns' quarterback woes have been well-documented. For us to put a good quarterback on the field who can be productive and help our team win, that's our ultimate goal," McCown said. "We'll see how it plays out, but I look forward to working with him."

Fantasy Tip: Don't expect McCown to be with Cleveland by the time training camps begin. He's a veteran journeyman that has had his moments in the NFL, but he's not ideal starting material. He could win a starting job if he's traded elsewhere, but even then he would be nothing more than a fantasy backup.

49ers | Josh McCown an option for Niners

Wed, 30 Mar 2016 11:25:40 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown is an option for the San Francisco 49ers if they part ways with QB Colin Kaepernick. 49ers quarterbacks coach Kevin O'Connell, who worked with McCown in Cleveland, would like to work with him again.

Fantasy Tip: McCown is at most a second quarterback in two-QB leagues.

Broncos | Josh McCown on Denver's list

Thu, 24 Mar 2016 10:38:32 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown is on a speculative list of quarterbacks that the Denver Broncos will consider in order to compete with QB Mark Sanchez.

Fantasy Tip: McCown and Sanchez are similar quarterbacks that have had some success in the past, but not much of it. Both are more game-manager types, which is apparently what Denver is looking for to go with their strong defense. Neither QB would be a fantasy starting option if they were to win the job.

Browns | Josh McCown on the trade block

Thu, 24 Mar 2016 09:52:13 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown is on the trade block Thursday, March 24, after the Browns signed QB Robert Griffin III.

Fantasy Tip: McCown played really well last season, but he's a low-end QB2 if he lands in a place to groom a young quarterback.

Browns | Josh McCown's future up in the air

Thu, 24 Mar 2016 09:13:27 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown has no promises that he'll be around in 2016 if Cleveland signs free-agent QB Robert Griffin III (Redskins) or another veteran quarterback. McCown could also be traded if the Browns sign Griffin. The Buffalo Bills and Chicago Bears were interested in McCown before he signed last year.

Fantasy Tip: It's hard to imagine McCown starting for any team in 2016, but he could be brought in to compete for a job. He's had some nice runs in a starting role but is too inconsistent and has become injury-prone at age 36. He shouldn't be on any fantasy radars.

Jets | New York interested in Josh McCown

Wed, 23 Mar 2016 12:09:20 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown has drawn interest from the New York Jets, who are still in limbo with free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (Jets). The Jets could wait until McCown is released to pursue him, but that may not be for another few weeks.

Fantasy Tip: There are slim pickings for whoever needs a quarterback right now. Fitzpatrick is still the Jets' best option, but re-signing him hasn't looked promising. If McCown is acquired by the Jets, he won't be starting material in the fantasy realm.

Browns | Josh McCown willing to mentor

Tue, 16 Feb 2016 06:22:02 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown said he wants to start all 16 games next season, but he's willing to mentor a young quarterback as well. "My expectation is to come into work and be available and be ready to do whatever's asked of me," McCown said. "If that's to bring along a draft pick and to start until that guy's ready, then I'm willing to do that. If that's to go the full 16, I'm excited about doing that. If that's to help that guy as he takes over, whatever my role, whatever's asked of me, I'm just here to win football games," McCown said. "Whatever my role is, I'm all in. I just want to help."

Fantasy Tip: The Browns are likely to take a quarterback early in the 2016 NFL Draft, but McCown could open the season as the starter. He showed flashes of productivity last season, but he's likely limited to being the second QB in two-QB leagues.

Browns | Cleveland likely to draft quarterback?

Thu, 11 Feb 2016 15:28:03 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown is the starting quarterback for the Browns as of now. QB Johnny Manziel will be on his way out next month, too, which causes Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer to believe the Browns will take a quarterback with their No. 2 overall pick, namely California QB Jared Goff or North Dakota State QB Carson Wentz.

Fantasy Tip: No one's finger presses harder on the pulse of the Browns than Cabot's. McCown is a supbar veteran quarterback whose NFL career may be done in the near future, and Manziel has proven time and again that he's not the answer for the future. If Cleveland doesn't sign a bona fide free-agent quarterback, it's hard to imagine the Browns using their No. 2 pick on another position.

Browns | Josh McCown could be cleared soon

Sat, 30 Jan 2016 12:44:33 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown (collarbone) said his recover from a broken collarbone is going well. His recovery is on schedule and he hopes to be cleared soon to work out.

Fantasy Tip: Depending on what happens with Johnny Manziel, in free agency and in the draft, McCown could very well be the starting quarterback for the Browns in 2016. He played well last season when he was healthy, but he's not a reliable starting fantasy quarterback even if he does start.

Browns | Josh McCown to IR

Wed, 02 Dec 2015 07:36:24 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown (clavicle) was placed on Injured Reserve Wednesday, Dec. 2.

Fantasy Tip: The team hasn't named a starting quarterback, but Austin Davis ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) and Johnny Manziel ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) aren't very good FantasyScore options against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Browns | Josh McCown won't need surgery

Tue, 01 Dec 2015 12:00:36 -0800

Updating a previous report, Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown (clavicle) will not need surgery on his broken collarbone. Additionally, head coach Mike Pettine said he's not ready to name the Browns' starting quarterback.

Fantasy Tip: One would assume Austin Davis would take over the starting reins since he came in for McCown in Week 12. Perhaps the Browns will give Johnny Manziel or Terrelle Pryor a chance, so stay tuned. Although, again, no Cleveland quarterback should be started versus the Cincinnati Bengals this week.

Browns | Josh McCown out for the season

Tue, 01 Dec 2015 11:55:13 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown (clavicle) is out for the rest of the season after suffering a broken collarbone against the Baltimore Ravens Monday, Nov. 30.

Fantasy Tip: Austin Davis should be under center as long as he is healthy, with Johnny Manziel backing him up. Terrelle Pryor was recently signed and could also play quarterback, but the Brown's quarterback position should be avoided for now, especially next week against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Browns | Josh McCown feared to have break

Tue, 01 Dec 2015 09:24:10 -0800

Updating earlier reports, Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown (clavicle) possibly has a broken collarbone, which would likely end his season.

Fantasy Tip: Austin Davis ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) would be in line to start against the Cincinnati Bengals if McCown is forced to the sidelines in Week 13. He would not make a confident play on FantasyScore.

Browns | Josh McCown going for more tests

Tue, 01 Dec 2015 08:58:39 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown (clavicle) was in a sling after the Week 12 game against the Baltimore Ravens Monday, Nov. 30, and he will have more tests Tuesday, Dec. 1, after undergoing X-rays after the game. Head coach Mike Pettine didn't say whether QBs Austin Davis or Johnny Manziel would start next week if McCown can't play. Manziel did not play against the Ravens after McCown was injured.

Fantasy Tip: Either way you slice it, none of the Cleveland quarterbacks are attractive against the Cincinnati Bengals and their stout defense in Week 13, and you might want to downgrade the rest of Cleveland's offensive weapons depending on who winds up getting the start.

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown (ribs) is listed as probable for Week 12 against the Baltimore Ravens.

Fantasy Tip: McCown ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) has a great matchup against the Baltimore Ravens this week in his return as starter. He's not the most reliable option, but he's relatively cheap and worth considering on FantasyScore.
