Yankees | CC Sabathia struggles at Camden

Tue, 14 Apr 2015 12:19:45 -0700

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia, who gave up five runs in 5 2/3 innings to the Toronto Blue Jays in his season debut last week, is 0-4 with a 5.54 ERA in his last six regular season outings at Camden Yards, the Baltimore Orioles' home park. He went 16-2 in his first 22 career starts against the Orioles.

Fantasy Tip: Sabathia ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) should be avoided on the road against the O's today at FantasyScore. Adam Jones ($6,000, 12.0% of cap) has good career numbers against Sabathia and dominated lefties last year, making him a great daily play, especially coming off his big game last night.

Yankees | Mixed results for CC Sabathia

Thu, 09 Apr 2015 21:32:20 -0700

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia took the loss against the Toronto Blue Jays Thursday, April 9, allowing four earned runs in 5 2/3 innings while striking out eight.

Fantasy Tip: While the strikeouts are encouraging, Sabathia's ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) final line wasn't great overall. It is best to let him put a few more starts under his belt before deciding whether or not to take a chance on him at FantasyScore.

Yankees | CC Sabathia not concerned with numbers

Sun, 29 Mar 2015 05:58:43 -0700

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia is not concerned with his spring training performance so far. "It is what it is. I've had spring trainings where I've given up a lot of runs and went out and had a good season. I've had spring trainings like last year where I didn't give up [any] runs and I gave up [six] in the first game [April 1 at Houston]. So you all can put stock in whatever you want. I'm not really worried about it," Sabathia said after allowing five home runs over five innings pitched Saturday, March 28, against the Pittsburgh Pirates Triple-A affiliate.

Fantasy Tip: Sabathia ($4,600, 9.2% of cap) won't be starting his club's season opener for the first time since 2005, and will instead start the third game of the season, Thursday, April 9, against the Toronto Blue Jays. Owners shouldn't be too worried about any of the issues surrounding Sabathia, according to the pitcher himself, but it's difficult not to be scared away somewhat after last season's disaster. Sabathia is currently being drafted at an average draft position of 281. There is plenty of upside to be had at that value, but owners may want to see at least one quality start from Sabathia before trusting him in a lineup.

Yankees | CC Sabathia may not start opener

Fri, 20 Mar 2015 07:20:45 -0700

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia (knee) may not start the season opener, according to manager Joe Girardi. The team has taken it slow with him this spring to make sure he's ready to begin the season.

Fantasy Tip: If Sabathia falls to the final few rounds of the draft, he's worth the gamble. His decorated career may not allow for that to happen, though. On FantasyScore, Sabathia ($4,600; 9.2% of your cap) could be a cheap option in good matchups. Monitor his velocity and effectiveness as spring training closes.

Yankees | CC Sabathia allows two runs

Tue, 17 Mar 2015 21:59:44 -0700

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia (knee) gave up two runs and four hits in two innings in his first spring start Tuesday, March 17, in a loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. Sabathia said his right knee felt good, however.

Fantasy Tip: At 34 years old and dealing with a degenerative knee problem, Sabathia no longer has upside and won't be the strikeout pitcher he's been in the past. There's also the risk of re-injury, which doesn't make him very attractive at all to fantasy owners. He's a late-round option, at best, in mixed leagues.

Yankees | CC Sabathia's radar gun readings

Tue, 17 Mar 2015 16:34:37 -0700

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia's (knee) fastball was at 89-92 mph, with an average of 90-91 mph, in the second inning of his first spring start Tuesday, March 17, according to a scout's radar gun.

Fantasy Tip: Sabathia is coming off an injury-shortened season in which his velocity was down from previous years. His velocity is promising in his first start, but he'll probably need to add a couple ticks to his heater to avoid continued struggles. At this point in his career, the 34-year-old starter is a late-round flier with a limited ceiling.

Yankees | CC Sabathia will be monitored

Tue, 17 Mar 2015 10:04:23 -0700

New York Yankees CC Sabathia (knee) will be "managed" throughout the season, a process that could include periodic injections of artificial lubricant to take the place of cartilage that is no longer in his knee, according to general manager Brian Cashman. Cashman can't guarantee how many times Sabathia's knee can withstand the strain of 300-plus pounds landing on the knee 100 times in games.

Fantasy Tip: An overweight 34-year-old with a degenerative knee problem isn't the exact combination most folks want on their fantasy baseball squad. Regardless, he'll still be considered valuable in most mixed leagues if he's healthy and pitching, but he's nothing more than a cheap late-round option to round out your staff.

Yankees | CC Sabathia will debut Tuesday

Fri, 13 Mar 2015 12:07:49 -0700

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia (knee) will pitch in his first game of the spring Tuesday, March 17, against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Fantasy Tip: Sabathia has late-round flier appeal, but at 34, it is unlikely he'll post anything resembling his prime numbers this season. Still, a bounce-back campaign isn't out of the question, and he could prove to be a low-end starter for your fantasy rotation.

Yankees | CC Sabathia has positive sim game

Thu, 12 Mar 2015 12:45:43 -0700

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia (knee) had no setbacks during his simulated game Thursday, March 12. Sabathia is ready for the next step, which could be an exhibition game next week. He threw 29 pitches over two simulated innings Thursday, and he thinks he'll have plenty of time to build up his stamina and strength before the regular season. "I'm not hurting," Sabathia said. "I'm not hurting. I feel good. That's the only way I'm judging myself." He said that he may need another knee surgery at the end of the year, but he's hoping to make it all the way through the 2015 season.

Fantasy Tip: Sabathia falls outside of our top-200 fantasy rankings, mainly because of injuries that have slowed him over the past several seasons. His ERA ballooned to 5.28 in 2014, but he still managed to strike out 48 in his 46 innings of work. There's reason to believe he can bounce back if he's fully healthy, but that's a big risk, especially at age 34. Sabathia is nothing more than starting pitching depth in the late rounds of deep mixed leagues.

Yankees | CC Sabathia set to pitch sim game

Wed, 11 Mar 2015 13:57:27 -0700

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia (knee) is expected to pitch in a simulated game Thursday, March 12. Sabathia is still on track to be ready for opening day, despite a somewhat more conservative schedule this spring than in past years.

Fantasy Tip: All reports are positive this spring for the former Cy Young winner. However at 34, the veteran lefty has a long way to go in a short period of time to be considered anything more than a late-round flier in drafts. There is still upside for a bounce-back campaign, though.
