Yankees | CC Sabathia feeling great

Wed, 10 Feb 2016 09:04:57 -0800

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia said he's feeling great after checking himself into a month-long stint at a rehab facility last October for an alcohol problem. "I feel the best I have in three years. I am excited to get to Tampa with a clear head and a healthy body," Sabathia said. Sabathia finished last year strong, and he can thank a brace he wore on his right knee. He finished 3-1 with a 2.22 ERA in his last four starts, and he went six or more innings in three of those outings while fanning 19 in 24 1/3 innings.

Fantasy Tip: Sabathia's strong finish and strong mindset entering 2016 are promising, but the fact remains he'll be 36 in July and has been on the disabled list each of the last four years and hasn't gone over 200 innings since 2013. He'll have to compete to win a rotation spot this spring, too. He could be useful in stretches, but he's more of a deep mixed starting pitcher.

Yankees | CC Sabathia competing for rotation spot

Wed, 10 Feb 2016 09:01:03 -0800

New York Yankees SPs CC Sabathia and Ivan Nova are expected to compete for the No. 5 starting rotation spot this spring. Sabathia went 6-10 with a 4.73 ERA and gave up a career-high 28 home runs in 167 1/3 innings last season and will turn 36 in July. SP Bryan Mitchell will also be in the competition.

Sabathia did finish 2-1 with a 2.17 EAR in five September and October starts and gave up just two homers in 29 innings. Sabathia said last December he is already "light years ahead" of where he typically is in the offseason, and he expects to report to camp lighter than he has in years.

Fantasy Tip: Sabathia clearly isn't the ace pitcher he once was, but if he comes into camp lighter, stronger and more determined, he could be useful for stretches in the New York rotation. His decreased velocity and penchant for allowing home runs is a serious concern, so he's nothing more than a late-round flier in deep mixed leagues if he wins a rotation spot.

Yankees | CC Sabathia discusses his offseason

Wed, 16 Dec 2015 13:11:28 -0800

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia appears to have lost weight, and he said he is way ahead physically of where he usually is at this point of the offseason Wednesday, Dec. 16. "I'm probably light years ahead, being able to fully work out and do the things I want to do totally healthy," said Sabathia. "My workouts are a lot more tougher but it's kind of what I need at this point in my career."

Fantasy Tip: Sabathia is coming off arguably his career-worst season with just six wins and a 4.73 ERA, and he isn't guaranteed a spot in the rotation heading into 2016. Entering his age-35 season, Sabathia is nothing more than a dice roll at the end of deep mixed league drafts, and taking a wait-and-see approach with the veteran in the majority of formats is advised.

Yankees | CC Sabathia not guaranteed rotation spot

Mon, 09 Nov 2015 16:52:04 -0800

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia is not guaranteed to earn a starting rotation spot next year, according to general manager Brian Cashman. Sabathia just completed a rehab stint for alcohol abuse. Cashman's statement has nothing to do with Sabathia's stay in an alcohol rehab center and everything to do with the abundance of live arms on the team's staff. Sabathia has gone 23-27 with a 4.81 ERA while losing velocity on his fastball in the last three years, and he's also battled an arthritic and degenerative right knee. He said he's already started working out for next year despite spending a month in rehab.

Fantasy Tip: The lone bright spot for Sabathia last year was his rebound after he returned with a knee brace in the final month of the season, and the Yanks hope he can carry that into 2016. A lot will depend on his health and the velocity on his fastball. Even if Sabathia makes it into the rotation, he'll be a matchup play, at best, in traditional fantasy leagues.

Yankees | CC Sabathia in rehab a month

Mon, 05 Oct 2015 10:40:42 -0700

Updating a previous report, New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia said he will stay in alcohol rehab for at least a month, meaning he will not return to pitch for a Yankees playoff run.

Fantasy Tip: Sabathia finished the season strong, but his overall body of work along with his injury concerns were already making him a shaky pitcher for fantasy owners in 2016. Adding his problems with alcohol on top of it and he's probably one to avoid, at least in shallow mixed formats.

Yankees | CC Sabathia entering rehab center

Mon, 05 Oct 2015 10:10:12 -0700

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia has checked himself into an alcohol rehabilitation center and will miss the postseason.

Fantasy Tip: This is a big blow to the Yankees for a potential playoff run. Sabathia had a 4.68 ERA during the regular season but had been pitching well over the last month. He's expected to be ready to pitch for New York next year, but along with Sabathia's declining skills and health concerns, this is yet another reason to be skeptical about drafting him at all in shallow mixed leagues in 2016.

Yankees | CC Sabathia is 19-4 against White Sox

Fri, 25 Sep 2015 13:10:22 -0700

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia owns the highest winning percentage (19-4, .829%) against the Chicago White Sox among opposing pitchers who have at least 20 decisions against them. Sabathia faces Chicago Friday, Sept. 25.

Fantasy Tip: Chicago has the 26-ranked scoring offense against southpaws, and Sabathia ($6,200, 12.4% of cap) has struck out more than a batter per inning through his past three outings while posting a 1.04 ERA. FantasyScore players should view the veteran lefty as an upside source of cap relief and potential No. 2 pitching option Friday.

Yankees | Alex Rodriguez out of lineup Sunday

Sun, 20 Sep 2015 14:07:01 -0700

New York Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez is not starting again Sunday, Sept. 20, against the New York Mets. CC Sabathia has the pitcher's batting slot in ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Rodriguez ($5,100, 10.2% of cap) is the only big-name Yankee sitting out against the Mets on Sunday. This was to be expected, as A-Rod normally sits in National League parks due to the presence of no DH.

Mets | Michael Conforto out of Sunday lineup

Sun, 20 Sep 2015 13:39:14 -0700

New York Mets OF Michael Conforto is not starting Sunday, Sept. 20, against the New York Yankees. OF Michael Cuddyer is starting against Yankees SP CC Sabathia and batting seventh.

Fantasy Tip: Conforto ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) is a left-handed hitter, so the Mets are leaving him on the bench and stacking the lineup with righties. He may pinch-hit later but is not worth playing. Cuddyer ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) doesn't have much luck against Sabathia, with a .207 average. You may want to look elsewhere.

Mets | Daniel Murphy not starting Sunday

Sun, 20 Sep 2015 13:33:27 -0700

New York Mets 2B Daniel Murphy is not in the lineup Sunday, Sept. 20, against the New York Yankees. 2B Juan Uribe will start instead and bat fourth against Yankees SP CC Sabathia.

Fantasy Tip: Murphy ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) is a lefty, so manager Terry Collins wants to avoid the matchup and go with a safe bet in a righty hitter. Unfortunately, Uribe ($2,800, 5.6% of cap) has a .191 average against Sabathia and a .188 mark in the last week. The best thing to do is leave him on the bench.
