Pirates | Francisco Liriano to miss start

Tue, 12 Apr 2016 15:08:59 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Ryan Vogelsong will start Wednesday, April 13, versus the Detroit Tigers. He's filling in for SP Francisco Liriano (hamstring), who has right hamstring discomfort and is being considered day-to-day.

Fantasy Tip: Vogelsong will be making his first start as a Pirate in his second tenure with the club, but he's someone that should be avoided in just about all fantasy formats. Aside from his inconsistency, the 38-year-old will have an ultra-tough assignment, as Detroit currently sports one of the most dangerous lineups in baseball. As for Liriano, it looks like he'll be OK for his next start.

Pirates | Juan Nicasio cracks rotation

Wed, 30 Mar 2016 13:23:02 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Juan Nicasio will be the fifth starter to start the season, and SP Ryan Vogelsong will pitch out of the bullpen.

Fantasy Tip: Nicasio had a sterling spring with 24 strikeouts through 15 scoreless innings, and he has begun to climb up draft boards. However, the 29-year-old righty has 439 1/3 innings in the league without ever being a strong fantasy option. Don't overvalue him, but at the same time, don't shy away from using a late-round pick in mixed leagues on Nicasio. Vogelsong is nothing more than a low-end option in NL-only formats.

Pirates | Jeff Locke makes rotation

Tue, 29 Mar 2016 15:31:22 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jeff Locke will be in the starting rotation to begin the year. SPs Ryan Vogelsong and Juan Nicasio are still battling for the fifth and final spot. Locke has been experimenting with a new windup delivery this spring.

Fantasy Tip: Locke saw some control gains last year associated with more mechanical changes, but the bottom line is he doesn't generate enough swings and misses to be viable outside of cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues. Nicasio has been a big spring surprise with heavy strikeout numbers and could become the Bucs' latest reclamation project if he wins the job. Take a flier on him in deeper leagues.

Pirates | Ryan Vogelsong signs with Pittsburgh

Fri, 18 Dec 2015 13:09:20 -0800

Free-agent SP Ryan Vogelsong (Giants) signed a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates Friday, Dec. 18. Financial terms of the deal were undisclosed.

Fantasy Tip: Vogelsong owns a 4.63 ERA, a 1.41 WHIP and a 6.9 K/9 over the past three seasons, and he was bumped from the starting rotation in 2015. Entering his age-38 season, there isn't a lot to like about the veteran in fantasy circles. At best, he is a spot starter for Pittsburgh who could land in the right matchup to roll the dice on him as a streamer or FantasyScore flier.

Giants | Tim Hudson nearing the end

Wed, 09 Sep 2015 09:06:47 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Tim Hudson said that he plans to retire at the end of this season after he threw six innings in a win over the Arizona Diamondbacks Tuesday, Sept. 8. "I feel like it's the right thing to do, the right time for my family," Hudson said of retirement. "I played this game a lot longer than I thought I would and had a long career. Nights like tonight are very gratifying to go out there in this stage in my career to give my team a chance to win." After his impressive start, manager Bruce Bochy said Hudson will rejoin the rotation and replace SP Ryan Vogelsong, who worked in relief Monday, Sept. 7.

Fantasy Tip: The grizzled veteran put on quite the performance last night against the D-backs, even adding a home run. Despite a return to the rotation, Hudson ($5,100, 10.2% of cap) shouldn't be very attractive to owners in fantasy leagues with the season winding down. His performance last night is probably the best we'll see out of him for the rest of his final season.

Giants | Ryan Vogelsong struggles again

Mon, 24 Aug 2015 01:15:39 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Ryan Vogelsong gave up three runs in the first inning and took the loss as the Giants fell 5-2 to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday, Aug. 23. Vogelsong dropped to 9-9 overall.

Fantasy Tip: Vogelsong ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) pitched Sunday at PNC Park, where he went 6-13 with a 6.06 ERA, so this outing may have been predictable. Vogelsong has been up and down this season, but entering this game he had been 3-2 with a 2.57 ERA after the All-Star break. As long as he is this uneven, you may want to steer clear.

Giants | Ryan Vogelsong to make another start

Mon, 17 Aug 2015 21:38:12 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Ryan Vogelsong will make the start Tuesday, Aug. 18, against the St. Louis Cardinals with SP Mike Leake (hamstring) staying on the 15-day disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: Vogelsong ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) will be opposed by Lance Lynn and a good St. Louis offense in their own home park, so it's probably wise to take a pass on him in FantasyScore.

Giants | Ryan Vogelsong earns win

Fri, 14 Aug 2015 05:01:19 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Ryan Vogelsong won for the first time since June 24 as the Giants earned a 3-1 win over the Washington Nationals. Vogelsong (8-8) allowed one run on three hits, struck out eight and walked four over five innings for his first victory in five starts.

Fantasy Tip: Vogelsong ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) has been streaky as of late, but the team hasn't helped matters either. The Giants won for only the second time in seven games. In some of those games the offense didn't hit for Vogelsong. Keep an eye on his matchups before making him a FantasyScore pick.

Giants | Mike Leake on track for Tuesday

Wed, 12 Aug 2015 12:32:06 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Mike Leake (hamstring) has passed all of his tests and is on track to come off the disabled list and start against the St. Louis Cardinals Tuesday, Aug. 18. SP Ryan Vogelsong will make one more start in Leake's place Thursday, Aug. 13.

Fantasy Tip: Leake ($5,500, 11.0% of cap) has been an excellent value play on FantasyScore this year, but using him in his first start off the DL against the team with the best record in baseball next week seems like too big of a risk.

Giants | Ryan Vogelsong suffers loss Friday

Fri, 07 Aug 2015 17:53:24 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Ryan Vogelsong (7-8) allowed three runs on six hits over four innings in a loss to the Chicago Cubs Friday, Aug. 7, with one walk and six strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Vogelsong ($4,200, 8.4% of cap), who has dropped three consecutive decisions, was starting in place of the injured Mike Leake (hamstring) and is likely to remain in the rotation until he returns from the disabled list. Vogelsong is scheduled to make his next start against the Washington Nationals Thursday, Aug. 13, but is not a great FantasyScore option.
