Rockies | Adam Ottavino picks up first save

Wed, 15 Apr 2015 08:53:23 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP Adam Ottavino picked up his first save of the season over the San Francisco Giants Tuesday, April 14, after manager Walt Weiss declared Ottavino the team's closer over RP LaTroy Hawkins. Ottavino struck out all three hitters he faced. "Otto was dominant tonight," Weiss told reporters after the game. "He's got closer's stuff."

Fantasy Tip: Ottavino should now be owned in all fantasy baseball leagues. Hawkins could eventually earn the closer's role back, but it's unlikely. There's no real reason to hold onto him in any leagues if he's not pitching in the ninth.

Rockies | Colorado closer situation unclear

Mon, 13 Apr 2015 21:51:55 -0700

Updating a previous report, Colorado Rockies RP LaTroy Hawkins is out as the closer for now. However, manager Walt Weiss said after the game Monday, April 13, that he wasn't ready to "declare a closer." RP Rafael Betancourt worked a perfect inning for the save Monday.

Fantasy Tip: Weiss said he would look at other options, presumably Adam Ottavino, and remember John Axford for closer experience as well. Hawkins could also find his way back into the mix at some point. Short term, it looks like Betancourt is the best bet for saves, but Ottavino has the best long-term fantasy appeal.

Rockies | LaTroy Hawkins taking breather

Mon, 13 Apr 2015 14:10:43 -0700

Updating a previous report, Colorado Rockies RP LaTroy Hawkins will take a "short-term breather" from the closer's role, according to manager Walt Weiss. Hawkins blew the save against the Chicago Cubs Sunday, April 12. RP Rafael Betancourt is expected to be used in a save situation if it comes up Monday, April 13.

Fantasy Tip: Hawkins, 42, is in the final season of his career. There's a good chance he won't get a chance to close games again this year if Adam Ottavino takes the job and runs with it. Ottavino should be your first target off the waiver wire if you still need saves.

Rockies | Adam Ottavino will receive save chances

Mon, 13 Apr 2015 12:08:40 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP Adam Ottavino will receive save opportunities with RP LaTroy Hawkins no longer closing for the time being, according to manager Walt Weiss.

Fantasy Tip: Ottavino is worth adding in all formats, as there are no bad saves. Add his 9.3 K/9 mark over the past three seasons, and he'll help in the punch-out department, too. Hawkins can be replaced in all but NL-only leagues, but even there, he doesn't carry significant value.

Rockies | LaTroy Hawkins removed from closer role

Mon, 13 Apr 2015 12:01:08 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP LaTroy Hawkins will not be used in the closer role for the time being, according to manager Walt Weiss. RP Rafael Betancourt will close Monday, April 13, if needed, and then Weiss will play the matchups. RP Adam Ottavino will also receive opportunities to close.

Fantasy Tip: Ottavino is the arm to target, and he would likely close Monday, but he has pitched in consecutive days. Ottavino should be owned in all formats. Betancourt is nothing more than a speculative saves add in deep formats and NL-only leagues. Hawkins, meanwhile, can be replaced in the majority of formats, as he is only worth holding in NL-only leagues. Expect Ottavino to take the job and run with it, though. He has posted a 9.3 K/9 over the past three seasons, too.

Rockies | LaTroy Hawkins struggling

Sun, 12 Apr 2015 20:44:04 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP LaTroy Hawkins blew his second consecutive save opportunity Sunday, April 12, allowing three runs on two hits in a 6-5 loss to the Chicago Cubs.

Fantasy Tip: Hawkins owns an ugly 16.88 ERA and 3.00 WHIP this year and has converted just one of his three save chances. Avoid him for now at FantasyScore, and don't be surprised if he is removed as the closer.

Rockies | LaTroy Hawkins to open as closer

Sat, 04 Apr 2015 18:52:19 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP LaTroy Hawkins will open the 2015 season as the closer, manager Walt Weiss said Saturday, April 4.

Fantasy Tip: Hawkins has struggled this spring, but he is still worth owning as long as he is handling the ninth inning. Just make sure you have other sources of saves to fall back on.

Rockies | Adam Ottavino to see save chances

Sat, 14 Mar 2015 13:54:13 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP Adam Ottavino could see occasional save opportunities during the regular season when CL LaTroy Hawkins needs a break, according to manager Walt Weiss.

Fantasy Tip: It appears as though the Rockies are trying to groom Ottavino to be their future go-to guy in the ninth inning, with the 42-year-old Hawkins entering his 21st and final season. He should be on your draft radar during the middle to later rounds of NL-only fantasy keeper leagues.

Rockies | LaTroy Hawkins to retire after season

Wed, 25 Feb 2015 10:08:33 -0800

Colorado Rockies RP LaTroy Hawkins said he will retire after the 2015 season. He is 42 years old entering his 21st season in the major leagues.

Fantasy Tip: Hawkins is a cheap saves gamble in the later rounds of your drafts. His skills are shaky on the wrong side of 40, and his K/9 dropped almost two full strikeouts last year to just 5.3. He has value because he'll start the year as the closer, and he could hold down the job early in the year. Rex Brothers is the team's closer of the future, and he's a sleeper/handcuff option as a flier.
