Blue Jays | LaTroy Hawkins on the move

Mon, 27 Jul 2015 22:04:47 -0700

The Toronto Blue Jays acquired RP LaTroy Hawkins from the Colorado Rockies Monday, July 27, along with SS Troy Tulowitzki in exchange for SS Jose Reyes and minor-leaguers.

Fantasy Tip: Hawkins is worth adding in AL-only fantasy leagues, as he is likely to work as a late-innings setup man and he should get a decent share of holds. He could even work into a ninth-inning role with the Toronto closer situation in flux.

Rockies | Closer-by-committee for Rockies

Wed, 01 Jul 2015 10:08:44 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP John Axford was placed on the family medical emergency list Tuesday, June 30, for the second time this season. However, Axford's son, who was recovering from a rattlesnake bite in spring training, is fine this time. In Axford's absence, the team will use a closer-by-committee approach, with RP LaTroy Hawkins among the candidates to record saves. RPs Scott Oberg and Tommy Kahnle will also be options.

Fantasy Tip: Hawkins is the most experienced reliever for the Rockies and recorded 23 saves for the team in 2014. He also successfully recorded his second save of the season in a clean inning Tuesday night over the Oakland Athletics. He should be your first target if you're searching for saves or own Axford. It's unknown when Axford will be returning, so this could be an extended chance for save opportunities for Hawkins and the others.

Rockies | LaTroy Hawkins throws BP

Tue, 12 May 2015 23:52:46 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP LaTroy Hawkins (biceps) threw early batting practice on Tuesday, May 12, facing hitters for the first time since going on the disabled list with biceps tendinitis.

Fantasy Tip: Hawkins may get a crack at saving games when he returns to the lineup, and so far it's looking like he could be back within the next couple of weeks. Keep an eye on what type of job he has upon returning.

Rockies | LaTroy Hawkins scheduled to throw

Wed, 06 May 2015 20:44:48 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP LaTroy Hawkins (biceps) was slated to resume throwing Wednesday, May 6, as he makes his way back from biceps tendinitis. "We're not rushing this thing," Hawkins said.

Fantasy Tip: Hawkins was the closer, but lost his job and then was forced to the shelf. He could return and get chances at saves, especially with Adam Ottavino (elbow) nursing a potential long-term injury.

Rockies | LaTroy Hawkins to DL

Wed, 22 Apr 2015 15:46:11 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP LaTroy Hawkins (biceps) was placed on the disabled list with a biceps injury Wednesday, April 22. RP Scott Oberg was recalled from the minors in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: Hawkins lost the closing gig earlier this month to Adam Ottavino, and he's the Rockies' long-term solution to the ninth. John Axford, who activated to the roster, could be next in line for save chances, but all indication is that it's Ottavino's job to run with for the foreseeable future. Anyone that was stashing Hawkins in an NL-only or deep mixed league can now cut him.

Rockies | Adam Ottavino picks up first save

Wed, 15 Apr 2015 08:53:23 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP Adam Ottavino picked up his first save of the season over the San Francisco Giants Tuesday, April 14, after manager Walt Weiss declared Ottavino the team's closer over RP LaTroy Hawkins. Ottavino struck out all three hitters he faced. "Otto was dominant tonight," Weiss told reporters after the game. "He's got closer's stuff."

Fantasy Tip: Ottavino should now be owned in all fantasy baseball leagues. Hawkins could eventually earn the closer's role back, but it's unlikely. There's no real reason to hold onto him in any leagues if he's not pitching in the ninth.

Rockies | Colorado closer situation unclear

Mon, 13 Apr 2015 21:51:55 -0700

Updating a previous report, Colorado Rockies RP LaTroy Hawkins is out as the closer for now. However, manager Walt Weiss said after the game Monday, April 13, that he wasn't ready to "declare a closer." RP Rafael Betancourt worked a perfect inning for the save Monday.

Fantasy Tip: Weiss said he would look at other options, presumably Adam Ottavino, and remember John Axford for closer experience as well. Hawkins could also find his way back into the mix at some point. Short term, it looks like Betancourt is the best bet for saves, but Ottavino has the best long-term fantasy appeal.

Rockies | LaTroy Hawkins taking breather

Mon, 13 Apr 2015 14:10:43 -0700

Updating a previous report, Colorado Rockies RP LaTroy Hawkins will take a "short-term breather" from the closer's role, according to manager Walt Weiss. Hawkins blew the save against the Chicago Cubs Sunday, April 12. RP Rafael Betancourt is expected to be used in a save situation if it comes up Monday, April 13.

Fantasy Tip: Hawkins, 42, is in the final season of his career. There's a good chance he won't get a chance to close games again this year if Adam Ottavino takes the job and runs with it. Ottavino should be your first target off the waiver wire if you still need saves.

Rockies | Adam Ottavino will receive save chances

Mon, 13 Apr 2015 12:08:40 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP Adam Ottavino will receive save opportunities with RP LaTroy Hawkins no longer closing for the time being, according to manager Walt Weiss.

Fantasy Tip: Ottavino is worth adding in all formats, as there are no bad saves. Add his 9.3 K/9 mark over the past three seasons, and he'll help in the punch-out department, too. Hawkins can be replaced in all but NL-only leagues, but even there, he doesn't carry significant value.

Rockies | LaTroy Hawkins removed from closer role

Mon, 13 Apr 2015 12:01:08 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP LaTroy Hawkins will not be used in the closer role for the time being, according to manager Walt Weiss. RP Rafael Betancourt will close Monday, April 13, if needed, and then Weiss will play the matchups. RP Adam Ottavino will also receive opportunities to close.

Fantasy Tip: Ottavino is the arm to target, and he would likely close Monday, but he has pitched in consecutive days. Ottavino should be owned in all formats. Betancourt is nothing more than a speculative saves add in deep formats and NL-only leagues. Hawkins, meanwhile, can be replaced in the majority of formats, as he is only worth holding in NL-only leagues. Expect Ottavino to take the job and run with it, though. He has posted a 9.3 K/9 over the past three seasons, too.
