Mariners | Fernando Rodney streaking

Mon, 29 Jun 2015 08:21:15 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Fernando Rodney has pitched seven straight scoreless outings.

Fantasy Tip: Rodney nailed down a save Friday night and could be inching his way into at least sharing save chances with Carson Smith.

Mariners | Fernando Rodney earns 15th save

Sat, 27 Jun 2015 06:25:52 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Fernando Rodney recorded his 15th save of the season during the Mariners' 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Friday, June 26. Rodney allowed one hit while striking out two batters in his inning of work.

Fantasy Tip: There is a chance Rodney walks back into the majority of save situations, but he'll likely have a short leash. Carson Smith owners shouldn't fret yet, either. Smith is the better pitcher, and he has done nothing to lose the closer job.

Mariners | Fernando Rodney getting back on track

Wed, 24 Jun 2015 17:49:52 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Fernando Rodney has not allowed a hit in his last five appearances, a stretch that spans 4 2/3 innings.

Fantasy Tip: Carson Smith has done nothing to lose his job as Seattle's closer. However, owners in AL-only and deep mixed fantasy leagues should still hold on to Rodney because manager Lloyd McClendon has said numerous times that they eventually want to go back to him.

Mariners | Fernando Rodney could see save chances

Thu, 18 Jun 2015 06:42:26 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Fernando Rodney could see save opportunities on days that RP Carson Smith is unavailable, according to manager Lloyd McClendon.

Fantasy Tip: Smith hasn't done anything to lose his grip on the position, but McClendon has said multiple times that they want Rodney to be their guy. Hold on to Rodney in leagues you have space to do so because it seems like a matter of time before the job is his again.

Mariners | Fernando Rodney remains setup man

Wed, 17 Jun 2015 20:37:34 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Fernando Rodney has been better lately, but he will remain in a setup role for the time being, manager Lloyd McClendon indicated Wednesday, June 17. RP Carson Smith will continue to close games.

Fantasy Tip: Rodney has posted a 2.25 ERA with three strikeouts in four appearances since being stripped of closer duties. AL-only fantasy owners and those in deeper standard formats will want to keep him rostered. If Carson Smith should falter, Rodney could get another crack.

Mariners | Fernando Rodney not ready for ninth

Fri, 12 Jun 2015 14:29:57 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Fernando Rodney is not ready to return to closing games, according to manager Lloyd McClendon. "We'll use him where we think he fits the best."

Fantasy Tip: Rodney was atrocious in the closer role, and you should only hang onto him if you're desperate for saves. Be prepared to cut bait if nothing changes with his role soon, especially considering Carson Smith has been exceptional this season and has converted both saves since taking over the closer role.

Mariners | Fernando Rodney with scoreless outing

Thu, 11 Jun 2015 14:58:50 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Fernando Rodney, who was demoted from the closer's role and who is sporting a 6.75 ERA, allowed a walk and struck out one in an inning in a non-save situation against the Cleveland Indians Thursday, June 11.

Fantasy Tip: That's significant even if Rodney isn't back in the closing role, because he had allowed 13 earned runs in his last 14 innings after taking a break from the ninth-inning duties to work on his mechanics. Carson Smith has been perfect in save chances since last weekend, and there's a chance he won't relinquish the duties for the rest of the year. Hang onto Rodney if you're desperate for saves, but be prepared to cut bait if nothing changes anytime soon.

Mariners | Fernando Rodney working on mechanics

Wed, 10 Jun 2015 16:36:45 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Fernando Rodney spent the last few days attempting to tweak his delivery in an effort to regain his fastball command after a dismal stretch that saw his ERA climb to 6.94. Rodney said he is ready to return to the mound, but manager Lloyd McClendon noted, "The sideline is one thing. Competing in a game is another thing."

Fantasy Tip: Many would suggest McClendon has been committed to a fault to Rodney, as the reliever has been absolutely awful. However, Rodney's case improved when Carson Smith allowed a long fly in his last outing. All said, Rodney is nothing more than a desperation source of saves, unless he somehow turns things around.

Mariners | Fernando Rodney won't be eased back in

Wed, 10 Jun 2015 11:03:34 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Fernando Rodney isn't expected to be eased back into low-leverage situations once he cleans up the mechanical issues that have plagued him this year and have resulted in a 6.94 ERA in 24 outings, according to manager Lloyd McClendon. "I don't think it's going to be low leverage," McClendon said. "When the pitching coach (Rick Waits) comes back to me and says we've got this mechanical stuff straightened out, he'll pitch the eighth and, sometimes, the ninth inning."

Fantasy Tip: The Mariners seem fully prepared to give Rodney at least a share of the closing duties back once he fixes his mechanics. That means you need to keep holding onto him for now, although he should be on your bench for the time being while he works out his issues. Carson Smith should be universally owned and could continue to see work in the ninth once Rodney is anointed the closer again.

Mariners | Fernando Rodney not ready for closer role

Tue, 09 Jun 2015 17:00:20 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Fernando Rodney is not ready to return to the team's closer role, according to manager Lloyd McClendon. McClendon said it's up to pitching coach Rick Waits as to when Rodney has fixed his mechanical issues and is ready to return to the role. Rodney was removed from the ninth-inning duties over the weekend and RP Carson Smith filled in to record the save Saturday, June 6. Rodney has given up a run in nine of his last 13 outings since May 4, and his ERA has risen to 6.94. However, McClendon doesn't think Smith is ready for the full-time closer duties, and he even mentioned RPs Charlie Furbush and Mark Lowe as candidates to see save chances. For now, Rodney will face left-handed hitters, who are hitting only .256 against him compared to .346 for right-handers. Rodney hasn't pitched since taking the loss last Friday.

Fantasy Tip: Rodney should still be owned in all leagues, since McClendon isn't ruling out him returning to the closing role eventually. In the meantime, Smith should see the majority of the save chances, but there's a possibility Furbush or Lowe will sneak in for a closure or two. Obviously don't make much of an investment in the secondary candidates if you're desperate for saves.
