Padres | Ryan Buchter picks up save

Thu, 12 May 2016 20:20:57 -0700

San Diego Padres RP Ryan Buchter pitched a perfect ninth inning against the Milwaukee Brewers Thursday, May 12, to pick up his first save of the year. RP Fernando Rodney was unavailable after saving both games of a double-header Wednesday, May 11.

Fantasy Tip: It is worth noting that Buchter earned the save chance while Brandon Maurer remained in a setup role. If Rodney starts to struggle, Buchter could be worth stashing.

Padres | Fernando Rodney saves both games

Wed, 11 May 2016 23:24:30 -0700

San Diego Padres RP Fernando Rodney recorded his 10th save in the second game of a doubleheader Wednesday, May 11, after nailing down a save earlier in the day.

Fantasy Tip: Rodney threw 31 pitches in the two outings, and it's highly unlikely he's available to pitch if a save chance beckons Thursday against the Milwaukee Brewers. Brandon Maurer could be summoned for the save Thursday, but he's already worth consideration of owning with 23 K's in 16 2/3 innings.

Padres | Fernando Rodney stays perfect

Wed, 11 May 2016 15:54:54 -0700

San Diego Padres RP Fernando Rodney pitched a perfect ninth inning Wednesday, May 11, against the Chicago Cubs to record his ninth save of the season in as many tries. In the process, he maintained his 0.00 ERA on the year.

Fantasy Tip: He's been quite a story in 2016, as not even a year ago Rodney was so disappointing that Seattle shipped him out of town. Many probably thought the 39-year-old could no longer be an effective closer, yet here he is regularly shooting off crossbows again just like he always would. Averaging a strikeout per inning as well, Rodney has clearly performed like one of the best closers in the league through the first month and change of the campaign.

Padres | Fernando Rodney earns another save

Sat, 07 May 2016 05:38:05 -0700

San Diego Padres RP Fernando Rodney pitched a scoreless ninth inning against the New York Mets Friday, May 6, to earn his eighth save of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Rodney has not allowed an earned run this season and has picked up a save in seven of his last eight appearances. Rodney is one of the better closers at this point and should be starting in all leagues.

Padres | Fernando Rodney picks up save

Sat, 23 Apr 2016 06:20:12 -0700

San Diego Padres RP Fernando Rodney pitched a scoreless ninth inning against the St. Louis Cardinals Friday, April 22, to pick up his third save of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Rodney has not allowed an earned run in any of his six appearances this season and has struck out seven batters in 6 1/3 innings. Rodney should have a solid amount of save opportunities moving forward and should be owned in all leagues.

Padres | Fernando Rodney nearing game action

Sun, 06 Mar 2016 11:19:14 -0800

San Diego Padres RP Fernando Rodney (hamstring) threw batting practice on Sunday, March 6, and will throw one more session before being cleared for game action.

Fantasy Tip: Rodney will likely begin the season as San Diego's closer and could be a cheap source of saves late on draft day. The soon-to-be 39-year-old right-hander posted an underwhelming 4.74 ERA in 62 2/3 innings last season between the Seattle Mariners and Chicago Cubs, although the spacious dimensions of PETCO Park could do his overall numbers some good if he holds on to the job.

Padres | Fernando Rodney healing

Thu, 18 Feb 2016 08:54:20 -0800

San Diego Padres RP Fernando Rodney (hamstring) said he's about 85% healthy after suffering from left hamstring tightness in the Caribbean World Series.

Fantasy Tip: Rodney is likely to close for the Padres, but he'll be 39 in March. He wasn't very good in Seattle before finishing strong with the Chicago Cubs last season. He's likely to fall to the third-reliever range where he'll have minimal risk.

Padres | Fernando Rodney suffers minor leg injury

Sun, 07 Feb 2016 07:10:55 -0800

San Diego Padres RP Fernando Rodney (leg), who is pitching for the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean Series, left a game last week after experiencing leg tightness as a precautionary measure.

Fantasy Tip: The injury is not considered serious, so this won't affect the 38-year-old right-hander's fantasy value or impact his status for spring training. He is expected to serve as the Padres' closer, although his knack for allowing baserunners makes him one of the shakiest ninth-inning options in baseball.

Padres | Fernando Rodney financials

Fri, 05 Feb 2016 09:04:12 -0800

San Diego Padres RP Fernando Rodney's one-year deal is worth $2 million, and he'll enter the season as the likely closer for the Padres. He'll receive $1.6 million this year, and San Diego has a $2 million option for 2017 with a $400,000 buyout. Rodney can make $1.5 million in performance bonuses based on appearances: $500,000 each for 40, 50 and 60 games. He can make $3.5 million annually for games finished: $250,000 each for 20 and 30, and $500,000 for 40 and each additional five through 65.

Fantasy Tip: Rodney's penchant for putting runners on base makes him walk a tight rope often in the ninth inning. He's a shaky late-game closing option. Some combination of Kevin Quackenbush and Drew Pomeranz could factor in if Rodney struggles.

Padres | Fernando Rodney expected to close

Thu, 21 Jan 2016 08:51:43 -0800

San Diego Padres RP Fernando Rodney is expected to be the team's new closer after the Padres traded RP Craig Kimbrel to the Boston Red Sox this offseason. Rodney made the All-Star team in 2012 when he had 48 saves for the Tampa Bay Rays. He repeated 48 saves with the Seattle Mariners in 2014.

Fantasy Tip: Rodney had only 16 saves with the Mariners and Chicago Cubs last year. He struggled mightily with Seattle before being demoted from the closer's role, and his walks per nine innings was over 4.00 and his K/9 dropped to 8.33. Although he pitched much better with Chicago, Rodney's penchant for putting runners on base makes him one of the most volatile closers in the game, and he won't see as many save opportunities in San Diego.
