Braves | Several ATL regulars resting Saturday

Sat, 21 May 2016 11:00:30 -0700

Atlanta Braves 2B Kelly Johnson, C A.J. Pierzynski, OF Mallex Smith are not in the starting lineup against Philadelphia Phillies SP Adam Morgan Saturday, May 21. INF Chase d'Arnaud will bat leadoff and play third base, INF Gordon Beckham will bat second and play second base, OF Jeff Francoeur will play left field and bat cleanup, C Tyler Flowers will start behind the plate and bat sixth and OF Ender Inciarte will bat seventh and play center field.

Fantasy Tip: The Braves are facing a left-handed pitcher this afternoon, which explains why several of their left-handed-hitting position players are on the bench. Beckham and d'Arnaud are a combined 30-for-86 (.349) this season and should be viewed as productive sources of salary cap relief in DFS.

Braves | Atlanta resting three players

Sun, 15 May 2016 10:23:59 -0700

Atlanta Braves 2B Kelly Johnson, C A.J. Pierzynski and SS Erick Aybar are not in the starting lineup against Kansas City Royals SP Danny Duffy Sunday, May 15. C Tyler Flowers will start at catcher and is batting fourth. SS Chase d'Arnaud will start at second base and is batting seventh, while 2B Daniel Castro will start at shortstop and is batting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Flowers is hitting .273 over the last seven days and should be considered in two-catcher leagues. Castro and d'Arnaud have received limited playing time over the past few weeks and are not a great option for owners.

Braves | Atlanta resting four starters

Sun, 08 May 2016 09:42:37 -0700

Atlanta Braves 2B Kelly Johnson, C A.J. Pierzynski, 2B Reid Brignac and OF Mallex Smith are not in the starting lineup against Arizona Diamondbacks SP Patrick Corbin Sunday, May 8. C Tyler Flowers will start at catcher and is batting fourth in the lineup. OF Jeff Francoeur will start in left field and is batting fifth. SS Chase d'Arnaud will start at second base and is batting seventh, while 2B Daniel Castro will start at this base and is batting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: None of the players in the starting lineup has posted great numbers this season. Francoeur is hitting .370 with three RBI against left-handed pitchers and could be a desperation option for owners in daily fantasy leagues, but the other three players can be avoided.

Braves | Atlanta resting three starters

Sun, 01 May 2016 10:44:58 -0700

Atlanta Braves 2B Daniel Castro, C A.J. Pierzynski and OF Jeff Francoeur are not in the starting lineup against Chicago Cubs SP John Lackey Sunday, May 1. OF Kelly Johnson will start at second base and is batting fifth in the lineup. C Tyler Flowers will start at catcher and is batting sixth. 3B Adonis Garcia will start in left field, while 2B Jace Peterson will start at third base and is batting seventh.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson is hitting better over the last few days but is not a great option since he has a .186 average this season. Flowers has gone hitless in his last six at-bats but could be used in two-catcher leagues since he is hitting .281 with four RBI. Peterson has struggled at the plate and can be avoided in all leagues.

Braves | Tyler Flowers, Jeff Francoeur set for more time

Wed, 20 Apr 2016 16:13:57 -0700

Atlanta Braves C Tyler Flowers and OF Jeff Francoeur will both see more chances against left-handed pitchers during the rest of Atlanta's homestand. Atlanta will face three more left-handers in the next six days: Los Angeles Dodgers SP Clayton Kershaw Thursday, April 21, New York Mets SP Steven Matz Saturday, April 23, and Boston Red Sox SP David Price Tuesday, April 26. Flowers went 3-for-3 with three RBI against Dodgers SP Alex Wood Tuesday, April 19, to raise his average to .429 (6-for-14) against lefties. Francoeur went 2-for-2 with two RBI against Wood to raise his average against lefties to .333 (3-for-9). Flowers has started five games this year as C A.J. Pierzynski's backup.

Fantasy Tip: Those are small sample sizes for Flowers and Francoeur, and the lefties they'll likely face later this week and next are no pushovers. Flowers' value as a second catcher in two-catcher formats may be slightly on the rise if he continues to see more time. Avoid both against Kershaw in daily formats Thursday.

Braves | Atlanta going with hot bat behind dish

Fri, 08 Apr 2016 15:35:49 -0700

Atlanta Braves Cs Tyler Flowers and A.J. Pierzynski will not platoon strictly based on the handedness of the opposing pitcher, according to manager Fredi Gonzalez.

"It's whoever is swinging the bat," Gonzalez said. "Whoever contributes is going to play. It would be great if you could go one against lefty and one against 'righty' and they both contribute. But I'm open. Let it play out a little bit."

Fantasy Tip: Flowers and Pierzynski are low-end options in cavernous mixed, two-catcher and NL-only formats. Obviously, if one of them receives the lion's share of starts, their value would increase, but it seems likely they're locked into a near 50-50 timeshare all season, barring injury.

Braves | Atlanta catchers to split duties

Mon, 15 Feb 2016 21:57:23 -0800

Atlanta Braves Cs Tyler Flowers and A.J. Pierzynski are expected to split duties at the catcher position heading into the 2016 season, although it is uncertain exactly what the split will be.

Fantasy Tip: Pierzynski posted a .300 average with nine home runs and a .769 OPS, while Flowers is considered a little better defensively and less of a threat offensively. For fantasy purposes, Pierzynski is the guy you'll want to target, although neither are particularly attractive outside of NL-only formats.

Braves | A.J. Pierzynski returning to Atlanta

Wed, 11 Nov 2015 15:41:58 -0800

Free-agent C A.J. Pierzynski has signed a contract with the Atlanta Braves for next season, according to sources. The deal is pending a physical, though.

Fantasy Tip: Pierzynski boasted a sneaky good 2015 stat line for cavernous mixed, two-catcher and NL-only leagues, as he hit .300 and drove in 49 runs. However, entering his age-39 season, fewer starts and at-bats should be expected and the veteran should be viewed as a low-end option in those deep formats and left to the waiver wire in he majority of seasonal leagues.

Braves | Atlanta interested in several catchers

Wed, 11 Nov 2015 11:41:54 -0800

The Atlanta Braves would like to re-sign C A.J. Pierzynski this offseason, but they're also looking at free-agent Cs Matt Wieters and Chris Iannetta (Angels). The qualifying offer to Wieters diminishes some of Atlanta's interest.

Fantasy Tip: It was a shock to see Pierzynski hit .300 (122-for-407) at age 38 while becoming the team's starting catcher. That won't happen again, although he could be an ideal second catcher in two-catcher setups. Wieters has the most offensive upside and fantasy appeal here.

Twins | MIN interested in A.J. Pierzynski?

Fri, 23 Oct 2015 17:18:33 -0700

The Minnesota Twins may be interested in bringing back Atlanta Braves C A.J. Pierzynski, who will be eligible for free agency after the season. He started his major league career with Minnesota in 1998 and played there through the 2003 season.

Fantasy Tip: Pierzynski, who will turn 39 in December, is coming off a year where he batted .300 with nine home runs and 49 RBIs in 113 games. The Twins may be interested in using him in a platoon with Kurt Suzuki, with the left-handed-hitting Pierzynski facing most right-handed pitchers and Suzuki playing against most lefties.
