Free-agent 1B Nick Johnson (Orioles) has decided to retire from baseball, according to WFAN in New York, and later acknowledged by Johnson on his Twitter feed. Johnson left the Baltimore Orioles in late June due to a wrist injury that had plagued him in his career, and he never returned. Johnson was attempting to come back from injury after not playing at all in the majors in 2011.

Baltimore Orioles OF Endy Chavez, SS Bill Hall, 1B Nick Johnson, OF Nate McLouth, SP Joe Saunders, DH Jim Thome and SP Randy Wolf are all eligible for free agency following the season. The Orioles likely will make a run at McLouth, Saunders and perhaps Thome. The rest are likely gone.

Baltimore Orioles RP Troy Patton (ankle) will throw in Florida to test his ankle Thursday, Aug. 30. 3B Wilson Betemit (wrist) felt good after receiving four at-bats with Double-A Bowie Wednesday, Aug. 29, and he'll play again Thursday, Aug. 30. 1B Nick Johnson (wrist) isn't improving, and he won't return this season.

Updating a previous report, Baltimore Orioles 1B Nick Johnson (wrist) had an MRI which did not reveal any structural damage. The test revealed some scarring from previous surgeries. Johnson will wear a brace for a week.
