Red Sox | David Ortiz smacks three-run blast

Tue, 19 Jul 2016 21:46:55 -0700

Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz was 1-for-3 with a three-run home run against the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday, July 19. It was Ortiz's 23rd of the season.

Fantasy Tip: After a quiet three-game set with the Yankees, Ortiz brought the lumber on Tuesday, clubbing his 23rd home run and becoming just the second player in baseball to reach the 75-RBI mark this season (Edwin Encarnacion: 84). Keep Big Papi in your lineup.

Red Sox | Edwin Encarnacion to replace Big Papi?

Mon, 11 Jul 2016 22:42:55 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays 1B Edwin Encarnacion was asked Monday, July 11, about potentially replacing Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz after this season. Encarnacion said he was honored Ortiz brought his name up, but said he is focused on his team right now and winning a World Series in Toronto.

Fantasy Tip: Encarnacion tabled contract extension talks after spring training, as he didn't want the distraction during the season. He is going to get a hefty payday somewhere in the offseason, whether it be Toronto or elsewhere. As such, he should put up monster numbers in the second half for fantasy owners to bump up his price tag.

Red Sox | David Ortiz connects on 22nd home run

Sun, 10 Jul 2016 15:30:34 -0700

Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz homered for the third time in four games against the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday, July 10, lifting a first-inning pitch from SP Jake Odorizzi over the fence in left.

Fantasy Tip: Big Papi ends the first half ranking second in the AL in average (.332) and second in the majors in RBI (72), which isn't too shabby for a 40-year-old man set to retire at the end of the year. He'll make his 10th All-Star Game appearance on Tuesday and figures to draw a huge ovation from the crowd in San Diego when he does so. In addition to his aforementioned prodigious totals, Ortiz has scored 42 runs and a team-high 22 home runs.

Red Sox | David Ortiz opting out of derby

Wed, 29 Jun 2016 15:53:57 -0700

Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz does not intend to participate in the Home Run Derby during All-Star weekend.

Fantasy Tip: Ortiz currently paces baseball with a 1.108 OPS and sits with 36 runs, 18 home runs and 63 RBI this season, as he is providing exceptional four-category production for fantasy owners. While it's easy to cast a sell-high shadow on Ortiz's fantasy stock, he had three consecutive 30-homer, 100-RBI showings leading into 2016, so this isn't exactly a fluke. Continue to view him as a high-end fantasy bat.

Fantasy Tip: Ortiz has continued to roll up huge numbers in his swan song season, proving he still has plenty left in the tank. He remains a top-notch fantasy play in seasonal leagues and a good DFS play regardless of price tag.

Red Sox | David Ortiz receives day off

Sun, 26 Jun 2016 10:46:45 -0700

Boston Red Sox 1B David Ortiz is not in the starting lineup against Texas Rangers SP Martin Perez Sunday, June 26. OF Bryce Brentz will serve as the designated hitter, while OF Ryan LaMarre will start in left field and is batting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: LaMarre only has two at-bats since being recalled, so owners should not consider him an option at this point. Brentz has gone 2-for-8 since joining the team and can be avoided at this point.

Red Sox | Big Papi's hit streak snapped

Sat, 25 Jun 2016 22:56:40 -0700

Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz was hitless in three at-bats with a walk Saturday, June 25, against the Texas Rangers to snap his 10-game hitting streak. His run was the longest active streak in the majors.

Fantasy Tip: While Big Papi had a 10-game hitting streak, he hasn't had a multi-hit game since June 16, a span of nine games. He has cooled off a bit, but remains an obvious must-start in all fantasy leagues.
