The Pittsburgh Steelers are saying they will not cut SS Troy Polamalu in order to create space for the salary cap, according to league sources. The Rooney family remains extremely loyal to Polamalu and considers him too valuable to let go. Instead, the two sides will attempt to work out a restructured contract that will lower his $10.88 million cap hit for 2014. The Steelers are currently $15.5 million over the salary cap.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are projected to be more than $10 million over the cap, and cutting OT Levi J. Brown would free up $6 million immediately. If they choose to cut CB Ike Taylor, that would open up another $7 million in cap space, while cutting SS Troy Polamalu would free up $8.25 million.

Pittsburgh Steelers owner Art Rooney said he wants SS Troy Polamalu "to retire a Steeler." Polamalu will make $8.5 million in 2014 in the final year of his deal, and he'll count $10,887,500 against the salary cap. "How we structure or restructure (Polamalu's contract) is something we will look at in the next few months," Rooney said. "There are a lot of pieces to the puzzle, but I certainly expect Troy will be one of the pieces to that puzzle. ... He's obviously been one of the great Steelers of all time."
